Jordan Love ran for a go-ahead touchdown in the closing minutes, and the Green Bay Packers hung on to beat the Chicago Bears 20-19 on Sunday when Karl Brooks blocked Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
The Packers (7-3) made just enough plays to avoid falling farther behind Detroit and Minnesota in the NFC North and beat the last-place Bears (4-6) for the 11th straight time, the longest streak by either team in the storied rivalry.
Love put Green Bay on top 20-19 when he scored from the 1 with 2:59 left. That touchdown was set up by a 60-yard pass to Christian Watson, who got up after making a lunging catch and ran all the way to the 14. The 2-point conversion failed.
Green Bay then sacked Caleb Williams on the first two plays of the next possession. The Bears regrouped and drove all the way to the 28, only to end a chaotic week with their fourth straight loss when Brooks got through the center of the line and blocked Santos’ kick.
The Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday and replaced him with passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, hoping to spark a unit that ranks among the worst in the NFL.
Love completed 13 of 17 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown. He also threw his league-leading 11th interception, matching his total from last year.
Josh Jacobs ran for 76 yards and a score for the Packers. Brenton Cox, active for the first time this season, had a sack, as did Rashan Gary and T.J. Slaton, helping Green Bay beat Chicago for the 26th time in 29 games.
Williams threw for 231 yards and ran for 70 after regressing in the previous three games.
Chicago’s D’Andre Swift had 14 carries for 71 yards. His 39-yard score near the end of the third quarter gave the Bears a 19-14 lead.
The Packers made it look easy on the game’s opening possession, going 70 yards for a touchdown capped by Love’s 15-yarder to Chicago-area product Jayden Reed.
Santos answered with a 53-yard field goal. It was his seventh this season of 50 or more, tying his own franchise record.
The Packers were in position to add to their lead early in the second quarter. But Love, who’s been intercepted at least once in every game, overthrew Tucker Kraft under pressure on third down at the 15 and Terrell Smith picked it off at the 1.
The Bears then scored their first touchdown since the final minute of a loss at Washington in Week 8. Roschon Johnson powered in from the 1 in the closing seconds of the half to cap a 13-play drive. The offense had gone 26 possessions without reaching the end zone.
Santos made it 13-7 with a 27-yard field goal on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Packers answered with a 70-yard drive, capped by Jacobs’ 7-yard TD through a big hole in the line.
Swift put Chicago back on top 19-14 in the closing minute of the third when he got a nice lead block from Braxton Jones and turned up the left side for a 39-yard score. The 2-point conversion pass failed.
Packers: CB Jaire Alexander, who’s been dealing with a knee issue, sat out the second half. … The Packers placed rookie G Jordan Morgan (shoulder) on injured reserve on Saturday. The first-round pick was splitting time with Sean Rhyan at right guard, with Rhyan getting the majority of snaps.
Bears: LG Ryan Bates was evaluated for a concussion in the first quarter.
The Packers host San Francisco on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the NFC North Sunday the Lions at home walloped the Jacksonville Jaguars, 52-6 and the Vikings won at Tennessee over the Titans, 23-13. The Lions, 9-1, lead the division over the Vikings 8-2, while the Packers are 7-3 and the Bears are 4-6.
In Sunday Night Football the Chargers held on at home to beat the Bengals 34-27. In Monday Night Football Houston is at Dallas.
Kansas City is no longer the only undefeated team left in the NFL after the Bills won at home over the Chiefs, 30-21.
Atticus Sappington broke a tie with a 24-yard field goal with 2:36 remaining and No. 1 Oregon rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Wisconsin 16-13 on Saturday night.
Jordan James rushed for 115 yards and a tying touchdown on 22 carries to help Oregon (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) win its first 11 games for the second time in school history. The Ducks also won their first 11 games in 2010 and went on to reach the BCS championship game before losing to Cam Newton-led Auburn.
Tawee Walker rushed for 97 yards on 20 carries for Wisconsin (5-5, 3-4) in its third straight loss. The Badgers fell to 2-15 in their last 17 games against Top 25 teams, going 0-6 mark in Luke Fickell’s two-year coaching tenure.
Oregon won by outscoring Wisconsin 10-0 in the fourth quarter. The Ducks also erased fourth-quarter deficits in victories over Boise State and Ohio State this season.
After Sappington put Oregon ahead, Wisconsin got the ball two more times but failed to capitalize.
Wisconsin lost the ball on downs at its own 26 with 2:03 remaining. The Badgers got one last chance after Oregon couldn’t convert a fake field-goal attempt, but Jamaree Caldwell tipped Braedyn Locke’s pass and Matayo Uiagalelei picked it off at Wisconsin’s 24 with 1:32 left to seal it.
Locke was 12 of 28 for just 96 yards with a touchdown and interception.
Oregon trailed 13-6 and faced fourth-and-9 from Wisconsin’s 41 when the fourth quarter started. Dillon Gabriel responded by rolling to his left and firing a 15-yard completion to a well-covered Terrance Ferguson.
Three plays later, James ran 11 yards around the right end for a tying touchdown with 13:14 remaining.
After a 12-yard punt return from Gary Bryant Jr. gave Oregon the ball at Wisconsin’s 43 with 6:49 left, Oregon moved into position for Sappington’s go-ahead field goal. Sappington also had made field goals of 35 and 42 yards in the first half.
Oregon’s missed opportunities early caused the Ducks to fall behind.
The Ducks outgained Wisconsin 152-minus-3 through the first three series by each teams, but they only had a 6-0 lead to show for it.
Oregon wasted a scoring opportunity in the opening period when Nyzier Fourqurean picked off Gabriel’s pass on first-and-goal from the 9. Gabriel went 22 of 31 for 218 yards.
Wisconsin cut Oregon’s lead to 6-3 on Nathanial Vakos’ 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter. The Badgers then pulled ahead on Locke’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Will Pauling with 25 seconds left in the first half.
The Badgers’ touchdown came after Oregon’s Nikko Reed was called for pass interference on a third-down incompletion in the end zone, giving Wisconsin first-and-goal.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 13-6 on Vakos’ 35-yard field goal with 4:43 left in the third after an ineligible man downfield penalty wiped out a 6-yard touchdown pass from Locke to Vinny Anthony.
But the Badgers wouldn’t get another first down the rest of the night, enabling Oregon to rally.
