GUN DEER HUNT SAFETY REMINDERS

A conservation warden with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says they want hunters to enjoy the nine-day gun-deer season, but they also want them to be safe doing it. Bill Hankee urges hunters to remember the acronym TABK. It stands for Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, Be certain of your target, what’s before it and what’s beyond it, and Keep your finger outside your trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. He says those four rules of firearm safety are pretty fundamental to keeping people safe. Hankee also remind hunters they must wear fluorescent orange or pink with at least 50 percent above the waist including any hats. The gun-deer season starts Saturday and runs through December 1st.

WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

During this Winter Weather Awareness Week, Fond du Lac County Director of Emergency Management John Ross reminds us that the National Weather Service has changed some of its terminology regarding watches and warnings. He says over the years people have been accustomed to hearing about Wind Chill Watches, Warnings, and Advisories. They are now known as Extreme Cold Watches, Warnings and Advisories. He says a Winter Weather Watch would be issued in the days leading up to a major storm. A Winter Weather Warning is issued when dangerous winter weather is expected soon or is already occurring. A newer term is a Snow Squall Warning. Ross says that is issued for intense bursts of snow or wind in a small targeted area such as hit Interstate 41 a couple winters ago. Ross stresses it’s important to monitor the weather when there is a threat of any kind of severe weather.

WALKING PNEUMONIA PRECAUTIONS

A physician with SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital says if you’ve been diagnosed with “Walking Pneumonia” you may want to consider taking some precautions at family gatherings this holiday season. Dr. Christopher Little says similar to COVID, walking pneumonia can be spread through respiratory droplets. It may pose a threat to those who are immunocompromised or those with frail health. He says a face mask similar to those warn during the pandemic will provide some protection, but walking pneumonia can generally be treated with antibiotics. Other respiratory illnesses to guard against this holiday season include COVID, the flu, and RSV.

AAA expects record-setting travel numbers for Thanksgiving. Nearly 1.6 million Wisconsinites are forecast to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday. That is an all-time high for Thanksgiving and over 35,000 more travelers or 2.3 percent more than last year. National travel numbers are also expected to set new records with an estimated 79.9 million travelers. The 2 percent growth equates to 1.7 million more people than the previous record set last year. These record-setting traveler numbers are being driven by economic growth, declining inflation, and strong income gains, which is expected to boost consumer spending by 4.6 percent compared to this time last year. Instead of Wednesday through Sunday, this year’s Thanksgiving holiday travel period is seven days, stretching from Tuesday, November 26th to Monday, December 2nd.
