RASD BUDGET

Ripon Area School District Business Manager Jonah Adams says for the second school year in a row the District should finish the year with a balanced budget. He says the budget for the current 2024-2025 academic year is pretty squared away. He says they are looking at levying $200,000 less and projected mill rate of $6.99 should be the lowest ever for the district. He says they are getting information on property values and he believes the tax rate may even be lower than $6.99 before tax bills go out in a couple of months. Adams says continued property growth and inflationary increases in property values also help to reduce the mill rate.

CONGRESSMAN GROTHMAN ON GUN CONTROL

Congressman Glenn Grothman says he doesn’t know why Vice President Kamala Harris would want to take away AR-style rifles from gun owners to prevent crime or violent crime. He says most of the crimes committed, especially in the inner cities, are with handguns. He says Congress isn’t going to be taking guns away from anyone and in particular guns that are largely owned by rural or suburban Americans. He says AR-style rifles are rarely used in committing crimes, but Harris is okay with allowing people to keep handguns that are more likely to be used for crime. An AR-style rifle was used in the attempted assassination of former President Trump in Pennsylvania. Grothman notes he recently went to guns shows in Ripon and Manitowoc attended by responsible gun owners.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK CELEBRATED

Area fire departments are celebrating Fire Prevention Week with open houses, displays and other activities. This year’s theme is “Smoke Alarms. Make them work for you.” Working smoke alarms play an important role in letting you know if there is a fire in your home. Building and fire codes require smoke alarms on every level of the home. It is best to have one in the hallway outside the sleeping quarters, and one in every bedroom. The Waupun Fire Department held their 150th Anniversary Open House last evening. The Ripon Fire District Open House is tonight from 4 to 7 pm at the fire station at 515 Aspen Street behind Homan Chevy in Ripon. There will be fire engine rides, demonstrations, refreshments, handouts, and a medical helicopter visit at 5 pm. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue will hold an open house this evening from 4 to 7 pm at the Public Safety Training Center at 750 North Rolling Meadows Drive. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago and Peshtigo Fires, which claimed thousands of lives, destroyed thousands of structures, and acres of land.
