10/26/24 LWV of the Ripon Area Voter Information

26 October 2024 News

From Ellen Sorensen President of the League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area:

With an historic presidential election approaching, many people will be voting for the first time.  This election has caused a bit of election fatigue, and this letter aims to assist voters with some of the dos and don’ts of voting on election day at the polls.

Every eligible Wisconsin voter should be able to exercise their voice at the ballot box with respect. Registering to vote is the first step!  You may check your registration status at www.myvote.wi.gov

Wisconsin voters can register and vote on Election Day because Wisconsin has Election Day registration; however, to speed up the process it is recommended that voters register in advance. You may do so at your local clerk’s office.

In addition, State Statues exist regarding what can or cannot occur around and near polling places designed to influence voting during an election. This is known as electioneering.

  • Electioneering is prohibited on public property within 100 feet of any building entrance a voter may use to access the polling place. Such as parking lots and sidewalks. This does not apply to private property within the 100 feet rule. Wis. Stats. §§ 12.03(2), 12.035(3).
  • This includes vehicles at the polling place with election signs, flags, or other endorsing information. (There is an exception for election-related bumper stickers on vehicles parked within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place for the length of time it takes for the occupants to vote.)
  • If it appears that the primary purpose of parking a vehicle within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place is to influence voting, then election inspectors will attempt to contact the vehicle owner and have them move as well as contact a law enforcement officer.
  • Campaign signs or flyers may not be posted or distributed within the polling place or within 100 feet of any entrance to a polling place. This prohibition does not apply to campaign activity on private property within 100 feet radius is permissible.
