13 October 2024 News
Shortly after 3:30 Saturday afternoon Portage Fire and Rescue was dispatched to 506 West Cook Street for a report of a house fire from a lightning strike. Fire crews found a two-story wood frame structure with heavy fire and smoke showing from the front windows and rear of the structure. All residents were safely evacuated. Fire crew initially made an interior attack, but the fire was too intense, so they retreated and fought the fire from outside. Before it could be brought under control it spread to the attic and roof. The lightning strike also caused homes in the vicinity to lose power and experience electrical breaker panel concerns. The lightning traveled through the ground to water laterals as well causing water main issues. One animal was rescued, but a couple of others lost their lives in the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the home’s residents. (Portage Fire and Rescue photos).
