THREAT AT TWO FDL MIDDLE SCHOOLS

Fond du Lac Police will have an increased presence at Theisen and Woodworth Middle Schools today after the rumor of a potential threat spread over the weekend. Principals at both schools released a joint statement to families and staff Sunday. They say late Friday administrative staff at Theisen was made aware of a potential threat. They reported it to the school resource officer. Over the weekend the alleged threat spread impacting the Woodworth Middle School. Administrative staff and school resource officers for both schools investigated and determined there was no credible threat for either school today.  As a precaution there will be an increased police presence at both schools.  The two principals say the incident serves as an unfortunate example of what can happen when rumors spread, either in person or via social media. At the same time they say if you are aware of a potential school safety issue, notify a teacher, administrator or another trusted adult right away.

SHEBOYGAN POLICE OFFICER INVOLVED IN SHOOTING

A Sheboygan man was shot by police Sunday night after disarming an officer. At approximately 6:09 last evening police responded to the 1500 block of North 13th Street for a report of a man waving a gun around. When officers arrived, they approached a 23-year-old Sheboygan man who fit the description of a caller. While officers were trying to determine who the man was, he suddenly lunged at one of the officers. He assaulted the officer and took the gun from the officer’s duty belt. A second officer fired at and struck the suspect. The man was taken into custody and provided medical aid by officers and Sheboygan Fire Department paramedics. He was taken to a local hospital and later flown to a Green Bay area hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery. The officer who was assaulted suffered minor injuries. No one else was harmed. West Bend Police are investigating the incident.

BEAVER DAM DOMESTIC INCIDENT INVOLVING FIREARM

Beaver Dam Police and Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic incident involving a firearm at a home in the 800 block of Madison Street in Beaver Dam about 8:15 Sunday morning. Police say the victim of the domestic incident was able to leave the residence and told officers the suspect was still inside.  Because of the high risk to the victim and public a perimeter was set up around the location. Police and Sheriff’s SWAT teams, and police and Sheriff’s negotiators responded. At 1:50 pm the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Several firearms were found at the residence.

BOMB THREAT AT OSHKOSH WALMART STORE

Oshkosh Police say the Walmart Store at 351 South Washburn Street received a bomb threat shortly before 6:30 last evening. The store immediately evacuated staff and customers. Officers assisted the store with shutting down entrances and assisting employees. Once the store was evacuated, an explosives detecting K9 from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office assisted along with other officers and employees in checking the business for suspicious items. Once the building was deemed safe and the threat no longer credible, the business resumed normal operation. Oshkosh Police detectives and officers were able to track down a potential suspect residing in Illinois. An agency in Illinois made contact with the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

CD SMITH LAND PURCHASE CRUCIAL

Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says he hopes an offer of $2.45 million for nearly 12 acres of vacant land owned by the county will become a reality. It is for land near the former UW-Oshkosh Fond du Lac campus now known as the Fond du Lac County campus. Kaufman says it will help with redevelopment of the campus. The offer is from CDS Real Estate, the real estate arm of C.D. Smith Construction Company in Fond du Lac which owns property adjacent to the vacant land. Kaufman says the purchase would allow for future expansion of the company and keep it in Fond du Lac. But the purchase is contingent upon rezoning by the City of Fond du Lac. He says the company has long been a supporter of the City and the County. The company’s corporate headquarters are in Fond du Lac, but it also has offices in Madison, Milwaukee, and La Crosse. Kaufman says they would hate to see the company relocate to another city.

DEPUTY EVANS AND IRO RETURN TO DUTY

It’s been a long journey to recovery for a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 handler and his dog, but they are back on the streets. Deputy Blaine Evans and K9 Iro returned to duty in the wake of a fatal shooting incident last October in Fond du Lac during which Iro was shot several times. Sheriff’s Captain Chris Randall says Iro had to go through recertification which included being around guns that were being fired to make sure he wasn’t emotionally scarred. He says Iro showed no hesitation during his retraining. Last October 14th Sheriff’s deputies were assisting Fond du Lac Police during a domestic disturbance involving weapons. Iro was shot and seriously wounded during the incident.  Deputy Evans was placed on administrative leave after having to exchange gunfire with 34-year-old Kyle Massie who was inside a vehicle. Massie was wounded and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. An investigation cleared Evans of any wrongdoing. Randall says as you might expect Iro’s recovery was a team effort between the dog and his handler. (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photo)

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS MONTH

Fond du Lac County Emergency Management Director John Ross says following 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency saw a need for being better prepared, that’s why September is designated as National Preparedness Month. Ross says emergencies can include fire, natural disasters, technology related incidents, a hazardous materials release, or cyber-attack. He says in the event of a disaster local government officials partner with agencies like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United Way, but individuals and families also need to plan and prepare. He recommends making a plan, having an emergency kit, and keeping informed during emergencies.
