SEARCH FOR MISSING KAYAKER CONTINUES
Green Lake County Sheriff’s officials say the search for a missing kayaker on Green Lake is continuing. In an update Thursday the Sheriff’s Office said every day, weather permitting, they search with a drone unit working in conjunction with a small boat. The search is adjusted based on previous days’ efforts and night wind directions. Bruce’s Legacy and Recovery continues their search as well with towable sonar, and when they are not on the water they are reviewing sonar data on land. The search will continue in this manner for the foreseeable future. The 44-year-old man went kayaking on Sunday, August 11th and failed to return that night. An initial search found the overturned kayak with a life jacket attached. Since then a water bottle, a tackle box and a fishing rod belonging to the man have also been found.
OSHKOSH MAN BOUND OVER FOR TRIAL ON RECKLESS HOMICIDE CHARGE
The 23-year-old Oshkosh man suspected in a fatal stabbing outside an Oshkosh pizza restaurant has been bound over for trial. Sybastian Crossman was in Winnebago County court Thursday for a preliminary hearing. He will be arraigned on the first-degree reckless homicide charge on October 31st. Prosecutors say the stabbing occurred outside a pizza restaurant on High Avenue on August 10th. The victim suffered a single puncture wound to the abdomen. According to the criminal complaint Crossman and a friend got into an argument with others including the stabbing victim. The argument moved from inside the restaurant to the outside where the stabbing took place. Crossman told officers they encountered people that haven’t liked him for a long time. He claimed the group had robbed them a couple weeks prior, but police were told by another person Crossman had been forced to get on his knees and apologize for a racial slur.
OHIO MAN SENTENCED FOR THREATENING SHEBOYGAN COUNTY JUDGE
Yesterday in Sheboygan County court a 41-year-old Ohio man pled no contest to one count of threat to an officer of the court, a felony. Two other charges against Alfred Lee Hudson were read into the record and dismissed. He was sentenced to one year in prison and three years of extended supervision. Hudson was given credit for the 413 days he had already served in jail. The charges stemmed from a voicemail Hudson left for a judge on May 3rd, 2023. Hudson threatened the judge, who had previously presided over a criminal case involving Hudson. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney served as a special prosecutor in the threats’ case and Calumet County Judge Carey Reed presided over the case. The Sheboygan Police Department investigated the threat.
BOIL WATER ADVISORY LIFTED FOR VILLAGE OF ST CLOUD
A boil water advisory for the Village of St. Cloud in Fond du Lac County was lifted Thursday morning. County Emergency Management Director John Ross says the order was a precautionary measure while testing was being done to make sure there was no contamination in the village’s water system. The advisory was put in place Monday. The boil water advisory was prompted by an equipment malfunction that resulted in a loss of pressure in the water system. Ross says two samples came back clear of any contamination. The Village of St. Cloud made bottled water available at the Village Hall/Fire Department for those residents who needed it.
WEST NILE VIRUS IN FDL COUNTY
Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says most people infected with West Nile Virus suffer no symptoms, yet recently the County had a death due to the mosquito bite transmitted disease. She says they put the information out there so people will protect themselves from mosquito bites and avoid becoming ill. To avoid mosquito bites apply insect repellant to exposed skin and clothing. Avoid going outdoors during evening and early morning hours. Wear long-sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors. Mueller says it is also important to remove stagnant water and empty any containers with standing water in your yard. Change the water in bird baths and pet dishes every 3 days. Mow or trim tall grasses, weeds, and vines. Each year an average of 17 cases of West Nile virus are reported among Wisconsin residents. The risk of West Nile virus infection continues until the first hard frost.
GROUNDBREAKING FOR FDL COUNTY FAIR STAGE
Officials in Fond du Lac this week held a groundbreaking for what will be the National Exchange Bank Foundation Stage at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds. County Executive Sam Kaufman says he inherited the project from his predecessor Allen Beuchel when he came into office. Kaufman knew it would go over budget so cuts were made, and it was rebid. The City of Fond du Lac chipped in $375,000 toward the cost, the County $600,000, and National Exchange Bank Foundation paid $300,000 for the naming rights. Kaufman says if not for the Fair Board there would have been no project they had the vision for it. Work on the stage actually began before the County Fair in July and it is expected to be completed before the end of the year. Those attending the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday included County supervisors, Fond du Lac City Council members and City Manager Joe Moore, the Fair Board, National Exchange Bank representatives and others.
UNCLE BILL MCCOLLUM PASSES AWAY
A broadcasting legend and beloved member of the Beaver Dam community, Uncle Bill McCollum, has passed away. Uncle Bill began his radio career in Beaver Dam in July of 1963. Ten years later, he joined the late John Moser on the WBEV Morning Show and the pair’s friendship quickly grew both on-air and off. They co-hosted the program together until 2016 when McCollum stepped away for health reasons. In 1974, the Barn Show with Uncle Bill hit the airwaves and became a staple for polka-enthusiasts, playing polka music and entertaining fans across Dodge County. Uncle Bill hosted the Barn Show until his passing. He was also the top biller in the sales department of the radio station for 50 years. Both Uncle Bill and John Moser were both named Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Local Broadcast Legends in 2021.
