Ripon Police got a lot of help early Tuesday morning pursuing a driver who fled from an attempted traffic stop. Approximately 2:20 am a Ripon Police officer tried to pull a vehicle over but it fled out of the city on County Highway FF. It turned north on Koro Road where the driver, a man, got out of the vehicle and took off on foot. Police got help from a Green Lake County Sheriff’s K9 team and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies including a drone unit. Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies and State Troopers established a perimeter. The search was abandoned after a couple of hours, but the driver is known. He is wanted on a probation and parole warrant. He will also face eluding charges. A female passenger was taken into custody.

FDL COUNTY SHERIFF’S K9 IRO RETURNING TO DUTY

It’s been a long journey but a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 shot in the line of duty returns to service Thursday. Iro has been going through therapy at the UW Veterinary Care clinic in Madison, jumping into vehicles and chasing down simulated ‘bad guys’ at Jessiffany Canine Services. He’s also been doing a lot of therapy at home. Last Friday he graduated from his K9 recertification course and been checked off to return to duty. Sheriff’s Captain Chris Randall says the community support and outreach has been nothing short of incredible. Last October 14th Sheriff’s deputies were assisting Fond du Lac Police during a domestic disturbance involving weapons. Iro was shot and seriously wounded during the incident.  His handler Deputy Blaine Evans was placed on administrative leave after having to exchange gunfire with 34-year-old Kyle Massie who was inside a vehicle. Massie was wounded and first aid was rendered, but Massie died at the scene. He died of a self-inflicted wound. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation investigated the shooting. Deputy Evans was cleared in the shooting.

It’s getting support from Rebuilding Together Fox Valley and Chip Wood is the group’s executive director. He says Rebuilding will go into a home assess and install items that help prevent falls such as grab bars, bathtub transfer benches and shower chairs, toilet seat risers, night lights, and anti-slip grips on the bathtub or shower floor. He says those five items are very effective with a 93.6 percent success rate in a home where they have done installations. Wood says it also greatly increases the likelihood of people living in their homes longer. The coalition has 47 members from 32 organizations. OSHKOSH EMS STAFFING CRUNCH

Oshkosh City Councilman Jacob Floam says the City needs to have discussions with outlying townships about providing a fourth ambulance per shift plus the additional personnel to staff it. He says the problem with that it is difficult to find seven more firefighters. He adds it is not just an Oshkosh problem it is a whole country problem in terms of staffing of firefighters. He points out they currently run three ambulances per shift, but it can leave the City somewhat vulnerable due to the service area they cover for outlying townships. Floam says the City does provide excellent ambulance service, better than some of the private services out there. To increase the service tax levy they will need to talk with the townships.  He notes the current agreement dates back to 2005.

ACCESS POINT CLOSED FOR MECAN RIVER FISHERY AREA

The DNR tells us the Chicago Road access point in the Mecan River Fishery Area in Marquette County is temporarily closed through Friday, September 13th. Anglers and other property users should seek alternate access to the fishery area by using other parking areas on the property during the closing. The closure will allow for needed improvements to the parking lot, and the area will not be accessible during construction. The upgrade is part of a larger effort to update the parking areas along the Mecan River. Additional access points and parking lots will undergo maintenance this fall. However, they will remain accessible except for when maintenance materials are delivered.

DNR ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS MAPPING TOOLS

The state’s Department of Natural Resources encourages the public to explore and hunt on public land this hunting season. Wisconsin has millions of acres of public land, and most are open to hunting. Time spent exploring and hunting these areas alone or with family and friends creates memories that last a lifetime. Hunters can search for and discover new public hunting areas using the DNR’s mobile-friendly online public lands mapping tools. These tools provide information on state-owned properties, voluntary public access lands and more.
