VEHICLE BACKS INTO LAKE WINNEBAGO
No one was injured when a car backed into Lake Winnebago in Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac last night. At 7:34 pm Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue was dispatched for the call. It happened near the walking bridge over the river leading to the lake off Frazier Drive in Lakeside Park. When a police officer arrived the officer found two individuals that appeared like they had been in the water. They were later identified as the driver and passenger of the vehicle. They denied injuries or transport to the hospital. The vehicle was located in the river just off shore. Water had filled the passenger compartment. Fire and rescue crews searched the vehicle for additional victims but none were found.
SMALL FIRE REPORTED IN FDL
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at a residence at 156 South Hickory last night at 11:16 pm. No smoke was showing when fire crews arrived and the home had been evacuated. A young man in the house had extinguished the fire in a bedroom by using a number of bowls and cups of water before the fire department arrived. There was a moderate amount of smoke ventilated from the building and some minor overhaul was required to ensure the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported and cause of the fire remains under investigation. A smoke detector in a hallway of the home failed to go off. The battery in it was dead. It was the only detector on the first floor of the residence. Residents found the fire when they opened a bedroom door. Firefighters installed a new battery in the smoke detector.
BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR ST CLOUD
The Village of St. Cloud in Fond du Lac County has issued a Boil Water Advisory for residents and businesses served by the Village of St. Cloud Water Utility. An equipment malfunction resulted in a loss of pressure in the water system. The issue has been corrected, and there has been no known contamination in the water system, however, as a precaution, the Boil Water Advisory is being issued. Water to be used for drinking or cooking should be boiled before use. The Village has been in contact with the Wisconsin DNR and will be conducting sampling of water over the next few days to confirm that there are no issues with the water supply. The Village of St. Cloud will have bottled water available at the Village Hall/Fire Department for those residents who are in need. The water supply will be available from 5 to 7 pm today. Updates regarding the status of the Boil Water Advisory will be provided as they become available.
FDL WOMAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING CAR CRASH IN WAUSHARA COUNTY
A state trooper arrested a 56-year-old Fond du Lac woman in Waushara County Saturday afternoon for driving while under the influence with two children in her vehicle. Penny Krawczyk crashed her vehicle on 7th Drive north of County Highway C just before 4:30 pm. When the trooper arrived on the scene the trooper observed open intoxicants in the vehicle and signs of possible impairment. During the subsequent investigation, which included field sobriety testing, Krawczyk was determined to be impaired. She was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated first offense with passengers under 16 years of age. No one was injured in the crash. The children in the vehicle were four and six years old. They were released to a parent.
ILLINOIS MAN ARRESTED FOR COLUMBIA COUNTY CHASE
Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 48-year-old Park Ridge, Illinois man following an 11-mile high-speed chase Saturday night. The pursuit started around I-90/94 and Highway 78 in the Town of Caledonia. The suspect’s vehicle reached speeds of 140 miles an hour as it approached the City of Lodi. A Lodi Police Officer successfully deployed a tire deflation device on Highway 60 near Lindsay Road. The suspect’s vehicle came to a stop near that location and both occupants were ordered out of the vehicle. The driver, Pedro Cortina, was taken into custody for felony fleeing and second-degree recklessly endangering safety, Pedro was also issued numerous traffic citations. The passenger was released. STATE HIGHWAY 91 PROJECT
Governor Tony Evers signed three contracts totaling $1 million to improve bridge, culvert, and railroad structures on State Highway 91 in Winnebago County. The improvements will be made on State Highway 91 from just east of State Highway 116 in the Town of Omro to Clairville Road in the Town of Algoma. Construction begins next Monday. State Highway 91 will be closed and detoured in the project limits to through traffic. Construction is expected to finish in late October. The prime contractor is Sheet Piling Services of Custer, Wisconsin. The detour will use County Highway M and State Highway 44. Local, business, and emergency access will be maintained at all times.
ST WENCESLAUS STREET PROJECT REMINDER
Ripon School Resource Officer Lindsey Michels reminds parents that the St. Wenceslaus Street improvement project is still going on, which will affect traffic on Sullivan Street and around Ingalls Field. She says a lot of people use St. Wenceslaus to cut across to Sullivan Street and the Middle and High Schools. Construction equipment and materials also encroach on Sullivan reducing the street width. She says in addition parking will be limited for athletic events at Ingalls Field. There is still parking available at the Old Middle School lot off Metomen and on the side streets. The city had originally estimated the St. Wenceslaus project would take until mid-October to complete.
OSHKOSH PROPERTY TAX IMPACT
The Oshkosh Common Council held its first 2025 City Budget workshop last week. Council member Jacob Floam says with a reassessment this year property values will be higher something they will have to keep in mind when they are setting the mill rate for the city. He says at the same time they have to make sure that city services are fully funded. One of the things Floam has asked Oshkosh city staff to do is show what the tax levy impact will be for homes valued at $120,000, $200,000, and $500,000 so Council members will have a true picture of how that affects different incomes throughout the city. The Oshkosh Common Council will approve the 2025 City Budget and tax levy in November.
STATE CHILI COOK-OFF IN GREEN LAKE SATURDAY
The Green Lake Rotary Club will hold the Wisconsin State Chili Cook-Off this Saturday at Deacon Mills Park in Green Lake. Chili enthusiasts and top chefs from across the state will gather to compete in the only sanctioned chili competition in the state. Winners will advance to the International Chili World Championship. The Chili Cook-Off also plays a crucial role in supporting the Green Lake Rotary Club’s initiatives. Those initiatives include local scholarships for graduating students, the Rotary International Polio Plus program, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and the ongoing Playground Park Revamp project. BGCTC ARTS & CRAFTS
Registration is being accepted for a brand new fundraising event from the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area. The Arts & Crafts celebration will be held on Thursday, September 26th at Knuth Brewing Company in Ripon at their Blossoms and Hops Event Center. Kassidy Walters is the Club’s Resource Development Director. She says Arts & Crafts is replacing the Dueling Pianos fundraiser. The idea for the event came while Club staff was together one day and CEO Jason Presto mentioned they should do something with arts and crafts. It will include an auction of art work created through the pairing of 15 local artists and 15 local students. Tickets are $50 each and include heavy appetizers and one craft drink. There will also be live music. Proceeds will benefit the Club and its locations in Berlin, Green Lake, and Ripon. The deadline to register for Arts & Crafts on the Club’s website is September 17th.
OPEN RECEPTION FOR LITTLE WHITE SCHOOLHOUSE EXHIBIT RESCHEDULED
The opening reception and talk for the Little White Schoolhouse Pop-Up Exhibit “Elephant in the Room” has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 11th at 7 pm at the schoolhouse in Ripon. The exhibit will explore the birth and evolution of the Republican Party mascot through political cartoons. The exhibit will be on display from September 6th through September 29th open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission to the Pop-Up Exhibit is free. The Pop-Up Exhibit is being done in conjunction with the main exhibit entitled “Pow-litical Comics: From Ripon to the RNC,” which will open Thursday at 6:30 pm at the Caestecker Gallery, located in the Rodman building of Ripon College. The powerful and thought-provoking exhibition will run through October 4th, closing at 5 pm. The exhibit will delve into Wisconsin’s deep-rooted tradition of political activism, tracing the state’s pivotal role from the birth of the Republican Party in Ripon in 1854 to its contemporary status as one of the nation’s most crucial battleground states.
WISCONSIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTH
Envision Greater Fond du Lac is celebrating Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce Month. Envision will spend the entire month bringing attention to the services they provide to members and the community. To celebrate Envision will host a number of activities to showcase members. There will be a Coffee Connection at Brothers Antiques in Fond du Lac at 7:30 tomorrow morning. On Tuesday, September 10th there is the Waupun Business Alliance Golf Outing at the Rock Golf Club in Waupun. On Friday, September 13th the Young Professionals Casino Night will be held at South Hills Country Club in Fond du Lac. A Member Appreciation Event will be held at the Envision Offices in Fond du Lac on Tuesday, September 17th. The month-long celebration will be capped by the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Conference in Sheboygan from September 24th through the 26th.
