Liover Pegeuro slashed a two-run double, Luis Ortiz pitched seven strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Ortiz (7-6) allowed one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings. His only mistake was a second-inning pitch to Jake Bauers that Milwaukee’s designated hitter sent to the seats in right-center for his 12th homer of the season.
Pegeuro led all Pirates minor leaguers this season in hits, RBIs and doubles before being called up on Tuesday after Pittsburgh surprisingly released first baseman Rowdy Tellez.. The shortstop laced a ball to the notch in left-center against Freddy Peralta (11-9) in the fifth that drove in Yasmani Grandal and Nick Yorke, both of whom reached base after working full-count walks.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa had the other two hits for Pittsburgh, a clean single in the fourth and an infield hit in the eighth. Aroldis Chapman recorded his 12th save after left fielder Bryan Reynolds threw out Willy Adames with two outs in the ninth when Adames tried to stretch a single into a double.
Ortiz, who began the season as a long reliever, has put together a compelling case that he deserves to stay in the rotation in 2025, a rotation that will include rookie sensation Paul Skenes.. The right-hander only retired the Brewers in order twice in seven innings, but avoided any real trouble after Bauers’ blast.
Rhys Hoskins, William Contreras and Sal Frelick all singled for the NL Central champion Brewers, who are readying for their sixth playoff appearance in the last seven years.
Peralta has been among the major reasons why Milwaukee is heading back to the postseason. The 28-year-old right-hander has been a fixture near the top of the Brewers’ rotation all season. He was in October form for most of the night against Pittsburgh. Peralta retired the first nine batters he faced before Kiner-Falefa singled leading off the fourth.
The only other hit Peralta surrendered was Pegeuro’s double on a full-count fastball down the middle. Peralta allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. He was lifted after fanning Reynolds leading off the sixth to reach 200 strikeouts for the second straight season.
The series wraps up on Thursday in Pittsburgh’s home finale. Aaron Civale (7-9, 4.53 ERA) starts for Milwaukee. Mitch Keller (11-11, 4.21) will make his final start of the season for the Pirates. First pitch is at 11:35 CDT.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Phillies beat the Cubs 9-6, the Cardinals over the Rockies 5-2 and the Reds lost to the Indians 5-2.
The Packers were back on the practice field Wednesday as they get ready for a big, earl6-season showdown with the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field Sunday. Green Bay (2-1) has won two straight after losing its first game of the season in Brazil.
Minnesota (3-0) after beating the Giants on the road in their first game and then winning twice at home, over the 49ers and last week against the Texans.
Meanwhile, Packers quarterback Jordan Love says he is practicing with fewer limits and moving better this week as he continues to recover from a knee injury.
Whether that means Love will be ready to play Sunday in their NFC North opener against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings, remains uncertain.
Love has missed two games since injuring his left medial collateral ligament in the final series of the Packers’ 34-29 season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. This is the second straight week he has practiced on a limited basis.
Malik Willis has thrived while filling in for Love, helping the Packers (2-1) beat the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.
Love said he based that assessment on having a feel for his body and assessing how he runs and handles drills in practice. Love added that he was “pretty close” to playing in the Packers’ last game, a 30-14 victory at Tennessee.
Love said he has been making progress since then, but wouldn’t make any definitive predictions about whether he’d play Sunday.
With Love out the last two weeks, the Packers have won on the strength of a dominant rushing attack and opportunistic defense. The Packers lead the NFL in takeaways (nine) and rushing yards (204 per game).
Willis has played a big role in that ground attack by rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. He also has completed 75% of his passes the last two games for 324 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
OL Jordan Morgan (shoulder) didn’t practice Wednesday after missing the entire Titans game and the second half of the Colts game. Limited practice participants included Love, CB Jaire Alexander (quad), DL Kenny Clark (toe), LG Elgton Jenkins (rest), TE Tucker Kraft (shoulder), TE Luke Musgrave (quad), C Josh Myers (shoulder), WR Jayden Reed (calf/quad), OT Zach Tom (quad) and CB Carrington Valentine (ankle).
Sunday’s pregame starts at 10:00 with the kickoff at noon and can be heard on FM 1023, The Bug.
InThursday Night Football, the Cowboys play on the road against the Giants. Both teams are (1-2).
Meanwhile, a former Packers RB penned a message to the city of Green Bay ahead of his first game at Lambeau Field as an opponent.
On Wednesday, Minnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones wrote a letter for The Player’s Tribune titled “A Message for Green Bay”, just a few days before the Packers draft pick, who played 7 seasons for them, returns to Lambeau Field for the Packers week 4 matchup with Jones’ new team, the Minnesota Vikings.
In the letter, Jones remembers his training camp in 2017, where he was one of three rookie running backs taken by the team. Jones was taken in the 5th round, 182nd overall, while current New Orleans Saint Jamaal Williams was taken 134th overall and Devante Mays was taken 238th overall. According to Jones, the WRs had started “betting” on which of them would be the top RB after camp, and Davante Adams told Jones one practice that “I got you as my dog in this race.” Jones also remembered his first offensive snap in the NFL, with starting running backs Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery hurt, where Aaron Rodgers told him in the huddle “Hey. I am one of your biggest fans in this entire organization. It’s your time. Yours, right now”. In the same season, with Williams and Montgomery back from injury, Jones
recalled a drive where Rodgers called timeout and shouted at the sideline “I WANT 33 IN THE GAME!!! I WANT 33 IN THE GAME!!! 33!!! NOW!!!”
Jones also expressed his gratitude to the Packers fanbase for supporting him with things like #FREEAARONJONES and the Packers fanbase for supporting him after a citation for driving with marijuana in his system in his second year, and for being there for him after his father passed away.
He closed the letter by giving thanks to Green Bay for everything during his 7 years as a Packer.

Reaction continues to pour in following Brett Favre’s bombshell announcement that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
Favre revealed his diagnosis Tuesday during a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., as he made opening statements before a committee examining welfare reform.
According to a story posted Wednesday by TMZ Sports, the Hall of Fame quarterback received his diagnosis in January after he began having trouble using his right arm and could not hold a screwdriver steady. He told TMZ Sports of the diagnosis in late August, but asked it not be made public until after the congressional hearing. Favre spent the majority of his 20-year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, in Titletown from 1992-2007. Since his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis was announced,
Favre’s former teammates, coaches and current Packers players have been reacting to the news and expressing their best wishes to the former great.
In the WNBA Playoffs last night the Indiana Fever were eliminated by the Connecticut Sun, 87-81. Rookie of the Year Kaitlin scored 25 points for the Fever along with nine rebounds and six assists but it wasn’t enough for the Fever. Kelsey Mitchell scored 17 and Aliyah Boston chipped with 16 points and 19 rrebounds.
Alyssa Thomas led five players in double figures for the Sun with 19 points.
