From Wayne Mausser

Willy Adames secured his first 30-20 season in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 7-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Adames stole second after an infield single, his first of two hits, with one out in the second inning. It was the 20th stolen base for the seven-year veteran to go along with 32 home runs. He and 20-year-old rookie Jackson Chourio (21 homers, 21 stolen bases) are the first Brewers teammates to go 20-20 in the same season.

Hoby Milner (5-1) pitched a perfect fifth inning for the win in relief of Tobias Myers, who allowed two runs and six hits in the first four.

Adames was the first of four straight batters to reach against Bailey Falter (8-9) with one out in a three-run second. Rhys Hoskins walked after Adames’ single and ahead of an RBI double from Sal Frelick. Joey Ortiz then dribbled a two-run single past a diving Nick Yorke at second base.

Pittsburgh answered with two runs in the bottom half. Jared Triolo hit an RBI single; Bryan De La Cruz scored on Yorke’s sacrifice fly.

Adames led off the fourth with a double to left. He later scored from third when Ortiz grounded to first baseman Billy Cook, who threw what could have been the start to an inning-ending double play past shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Falter gave up four runs and five hits, striking out five and walking one in five innings.

Pirates reliever Isaac Mattson walked Adames and Hoskins with the bases loaded before being pulled in the seventh. William Contreras scored on a sacrifice fly from Frelick.

In other games in the NL Central the Cubs pounded the Phillies 10-4, the Guardians beat the Reds 6-1 and the Cardinals over the Rockies 7-3.

The Packers (2-1) are back on the practice field today getting ready for the Vikings (3-0) in a huge NFC Northern Division matchup at Lambeau Field Sunday. Meanwhile safety Xavier McKinney is off to a great start with three interceptions in the first three games. Green Bay signed McKinney away from the New York Giants in hopes he could upgrade a safety position that ranked among the Packers’ biggest weaknesses last season.

Green Bay signed McKinney to a four-year, $67 million deal. The Packers also addressed the position in the draft by selecting Georgia’s Javon Bullard in the second round and Oregon’s Evan Williams in the fourth.

McKinney’s fast start has exemplified the Packers opportunistic defense under new coordinator Jeff Hafley. The Packers (2-1) lead the NFL with nine takeaways and already have intercepted seven passes, matching their 2023 season total. He’s the first player to intercept a pass in each of his first three games with a team since Cortland Finnegan did it for the St. Louis Rams in 2012. The only other players ever to intercept passes in each of their first three games as Packers were Doyle Nix in 1955 and John Anderson in 1978.

Also, the Packers will know more about the playing status this Sunday of starting quarterback Jordan Love, who suffered a sprained MCL late in the first game in a loss to the Eagles.  Backup quarterback Malik Willis has stepped in and led the Packers to two straight wins.

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers released TE Johnny Lumpkin from the practice squad. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction on Tuesday.

Former Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre told Congress he has Parkinson’s.

Favre made the announcement during testimony to Congress, where he was called to talk about welfare misspending.

Front Office Sports was first to break the news, saying it obtained a copy of his prepared testimony.

The Parkinson’s Foundation describes the disease as a neurodegenerative disorder. It predominantly affects dopamine-producing neurons in the brain in a specific area called the substantia nigra. This causes motor issues, including tremors, and then slowness of movement, limb stiffness, and problems walking and balancing.

While the cause of Parkinson’s disease remains a mystery, the Parkinson’s Foundation says it’s believed genetic and environmental factors play a role.

Environmental factors connected to Parkinson’s include head injuries. In 2021 he talked about his risk of having Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy from multiple concussions when he made a public service announcement urging parents not to let children play tackle football before the age of 14.

In August, he promoted a documentary about concussions in football.

There are treatments but no cure. Parkinson’s disease itself is not fatal, but complications related to the disease can be: The CDC ranks them as the 14th leading cause of death in the U.S.

Wisconsin quarterback Braedyn Locke must take over once again now that Tyler Van Dyke will miss the rest of the season with a torn right ACL.

Locke will make his first start of the 2024 season Saturday when Wisconsin (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) opens its conference schedule by visiting No. 13 Southern California (2-1, 0-1).

Wisconsin’s chances of producing a 23rd consecutive winning season — extending the longest such streak by any power-conference team — depends in part on how well Locke performs the rest of the year.

After Van Dyke injured his knee in the opening series of a 42-10 loss to No. 4 Alabama on Sept. 14. Locke took over and went 13 of 26 for 125 yards with one touchdown. He threw no interceptions but had a pair of fumbles that Wisconsin recovered.

That’s pretty much in line with the career statistics for Locke, who started three games last year after Tanner Mordecai broke his throwing hand. Locke has completed exactly half his pass attempts (89 of 178) for 902 yards with six touchdowns and one interception.

On Tuesday the Ripon cross county team’s completed in the Winneconne Invitational. 14 teams competed.

The girls’ team finished 5th with 147 points while the boys’ team placed 10th with 224 points.

The top finishers for the boys and girls were Aiden Ruedinger in 17th  place  and Addy Baird who came in 13th.

The Tigers will travel to Portage next Tuesday, October 1st, for the Portage Invitational.
