Brandon Pfaadt tied an Arizona franchise record by striking out seven straight batters to highlight his dominating performance as the Diamondbacks boosted their playoff hopes by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Thursday night.

The Diamondbacks remain tied for second place in the NL wild-card standings with the New York Mets, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-6 on Thursday. They’re both two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.

Milwaukee was playing one night after clinching its third straight NL Central title in four years.

Pfaadt (10-9) collected a career-high 12 strikeouts while allowing just one run and two hits in seven innings. It was a remarkable turnaround for Pfaadt, who had given up eight runs over 1 2/3 innings in a 15-8 loss to the Brewers just five nights earlier.

Pavin Smith hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the Diamondbacks.

Milwaukee’s lone run came on Garrett Mitchell’s two-out homer in the seventh. Pfaadt allowed only one other baserunner, when he gave up Brice Turang’s leadoff single in the fourth.

Turang moved up to second when Jackson Chourio grounded out, then Pfaadt struck out Milwaukee’s next seven hitters.

The only other Diamondbacks to strike out seven straight batters within a single game are Hall of Famer Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. Johnson accomplished that feat three times and Schilling did it once during the Diamondbacks’ 2001 World Series championship season.

A.J. Puk and Justin Martínez worked the final two innings to complete the two-hitter.

The Diamondbacks broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning by scoring three runs off only one hit. After Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo walked to start the inning, Corbin Carroll hit a ball that got past third baseman Andruw Monasterio and went into left field.

Moreno scored, Perdomo advanced to second and Carroll reached first on the play, which was ruled as a fielder’s choice with an error on Monasterio.

Ketel Marte followed by ripping a 3-0 pitch off the top of the right-field wall for an RBI single that knocked Brewers starter Tobias Myers out of the game. Perdomo scored on Christian Walker’s sacrifice fly that right fielder Sal Frelick caught in front of the wall.

Myers (8-6) allowed three runs — one earned — and four hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked three.

With their division title wrapped up, the Brewers rested shortstop Willy Adames for the first time this season. Adames had started each of Milwaukee’s first 152 games.

RHP Zac Gallen (12-6, 3.61 ERA) pitches for the Diamondbacks and RHP Colin Rea (12-5, 4.14) starts for the Brewers on Friday. First pitch is at 7:10 from American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central the Braves routed the Reds 15-3, the Cubs nipped the Nationals 7-6 and the Pirates slipped past the Cardinals 3-2.

Shohei Ohtani, hit three homers and stole two bases to become the first player in Major League history with 50 homers and 5- steals in a single season.

As a result, Los Angeles became the fourth team to clinch a spot in the 2024 postseason following a 20-4 rout of Miami in the rubber game at Loan Depot park. It marks the 12th consecutive season the Dodgers have reached the postseason, extending the longest streak in franchise history.

The playing status Sunday for quarterback Jordan Love is still uncertain as the Packers practice for the Titans Sunday in Tennessee. Love sprained his MCL late in the season-opener against Philadelphia.

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur, who spent the 2018 season as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator under Mike Vrabel, said Love’s status will be decided Sunday when the Packers (1-1) have to hand in their list of inactive players. If Love can’t go, backup Malik Willis will start for the second straight week. Last Sunday he and a strong rushing game led Green Bay over the Colts, 16-10

The Titans have lost their first two games by the exact 24-17 score, the most recent to the Jets. Two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons said it doesn’t matter who Green Bay starts at quarterback with Tennessee preparing to face both Love and Willis.

12 players were listed on the injury report Thursday. T/G Jordan Morgan and CB Carrington Valentine did not participate.

Sunday’s game starts at noon with the pregame at 10:00 and can be heard on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football the New York Jets won their season-home opener, beating the New England Patriots, 24-3.

Aaron Rodgers was in classic form, surgically precise as he carved up the New England Patriots. It was in stark contrast to last-year’s opener when Rogers was injured on the opening drive and was out for the season.

He finished the evening with 281 yards on 27-of-35 passing for a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding three scrambles for 18 yards.

Rodgers threw a 10-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard to open the scoring, with his former running mate from the Green Bay Packers now leading the NFL with three TD catches.

While it was a vintage version of Rodgers taking center stage, the future Hall of Famer also had a first when he connected with Garrett Wilson  for his second TD of the night. Patriots starter Jacoby Brissett was hit early and often while leading a New England offense that mustered just 139 yards and 11 first downs in the first half. With the game’s outcome decided, head coach Jerod Mayo decided to give his rookie and future franchise signal-caller some playing time.

Drake Maye took over at quarterback for the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter.  He finished making his abbreviated first impression having completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and a 56.2 rating. He also scrambled twice for 12 yards.

In college football, the Badgers are off Saturday.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0) hosts Michigan Tech.  The Titans have two straight wins against ranked teams. Kickoff is at noon from JJ Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
