MISSING KAYAKER SEARCH UPDATE

Green Lake County Sheriff’s officials posted a brief update on Facebook yesterday on the search for a missing kayaker on Green Lake. Bruce’s Legacy and Recovery Service which has been using towable sonar to search for 44-year-old Ryan Borgwardt of Watertown has continued their efforts. A couple locations of interest were identified. Yesterday the ROV or underwater drone was sent to take a closer look. The targets were identified and determined to not be part of the case. More data was collected and bottom scans completed using Bruce’s towable sonar after the ROV deployment. Ryan went kayaking on Sunday, August 11th and failed to return that night. An initial search found the overturned kayak with a life jacket attached. Since then a water bottle, a tackle box and a fishing rod belonging to Ryan have also been found. black bear in the wild

Authorities in Western Wisconsin are reporting that a 12-year-old boy shot and killed a wounded black bear as it was mauling his father. It happened in Siren, Wisconsin located in Burnett County. Ryan Beierman told the Minnesota Star Tribune that he was pinned beneath the 200 pound bear near their cabin on September 6th. His son Owen fired his rifle killing the bear. Earlier Owen had shot the bear from a tree stand wounding it. They used a neighbor’s tracking dog to try and find the wounded bear. They were emerging from a thicket when the bear charged at Ryan. He and the bear were both struggling for their lives on the ground when Owen fired the shot that killed it. Ryan suffered bites to his forehead, arm, and leg, and needed 23 stitches to reattach a flap of skin on his cheek. A DNR conservation officer said the hunt was legal.

FDL COUNTY CONTINUES PURSUIT OF RAILROAD OVERPASS

Fond du Lac County is continuing a more than decade long effort to get federal money for a railroad overpass at County Highway N or Kinker Road in the Town of Friendship. The County Board this week unanimously passed a resolution allowing Highway Commissioner Tom Janke to apply for a Federal Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant. Janke told the board it continues an effort that has been going on long over 10 years that has involved multiple county boards and two county executives. CN Railroad ties up the crossing sometimes for hours interrupting vehicle traffic including emergency and law enforcement responses. Janke says County Highway N would be the logical place to put in a railroad overpass. He says they have had plenty of support from Wisconsin’s federal legislators, state representatives and others but applying for a federal funding for what would be an $8 to $10 million project is a long, complicated and competitive process. Janke says the county scored high in a previous effort for a federal grant but fell short.

SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN PERTUSSIS CASES

The state’s Department of Health Services is reporting a significant increase in cases of pertussis or whooping cough across Wisconsin. Data in the state, and  nationally, show case counts are now similar to pre-pandemic levels. As of September 13th, DHS has received reports of 625 confirmed cases of pertussis, compared to 51 cases in 2023. Since January 1st, two-thirds of Wisconsin counties have reported at least one case. While people can get pertussis at any age, Wisconsinites aged 11 to 18 currently make up nearly half of all cases reported so far this year. To prevent the spread and protect against severe symptoms or hospitalization, DHS urges residents to make sure they and their children are up to date on their pertussis vaccine.

BERLIN SCHOOLS REFERENDUM INFORMATION

Berlin Area School District voters have plenty of different avenues to information about the upcoming operational referendum for the school district on the November 5th ballot. District Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says they are asking for a total of about $7 million over four years beginning with just over $800,000 for the next school year.  He says they have information on their website and social media pages. They also will have two information sessions at the Berlin High School Auditorium where people can ask questions. They will be on Monday, September 30th at 1 and 6 pm, and Thursday, October 24th also at 1 and 6 pm.  The estimated average tax impact of a successful referendum would be a $38 increase per $100,000 of value on a property. Durtschi says over the past few years 85 percent of the school districts in the state have gone to an operational referendum.
