Jake Bauers hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers, who had clinched the NL Central earlier when the Cubs lost, beat Philadelphia 2-1 on Wednesday night to prevent the Phillies from securing a playoff berth.

Bauers’ single off Phillies closer Carlos Estévez (4-5) scored Jackson Chourio, who had tripled.

Milwaukee closer Devin Williams (1-0) struck out Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh in order in the ninth.

Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta, making his career-high 31st start of the season, allowed one run on two hits in five innings, striking out nine and walking two.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola, among the NL leaders in innings pitched, went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out nine and walking one. He had given up 10 earned runs in nine innings in his previous two starts.

The teams struck out 28 times combined.

The Phillies’ magic number to qualify for the playoffs is one, and four to clinch the NL East.

Bohm gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the second inning with his first home run since Aug. 15.

Rhys Hoskins’ 25th homer tied the game in the fifth inning. The former Phillie also doubled.

Milwaukee right-hander Joe Ross allowed a single and a walk upon taking over for Peralta to start the sixth inning. But Ross retired Nick Castellanos and Bohm before being replaced by left-hander Jared Koenig, who got Stott to ground out on the first pitch.

Milwaukee clinched its second straight division title and made the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons by virtue of the Chicago Cubs’ 5-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics Wednesday. Chicago is still fighting for a wild card.

The Phillies made the playoffs the past two seasons, losing to Arizona in the 2023 NL Championship Series and to Houston in the 2022 World Series.

Brewers: Open a four-game series in Milwaukee against Arizona with RHP Tobias Myers (8-5, 3.07 ERA). The wild card-contending Diamondbacks will start RHP Brandon Pfaadt (9-9, 4.81). First pitch is at 6:15 at American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the A’s beat the Cubs 5-3, the Braves over the Reds 7-1 and the Cardinals downed the Pirates 7-5.

Lake County won the Midwest League Championship Wednesday night over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-4 at Classic Park in East Lake, Ohio. The Captains put the game away scoring five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the series two games to one.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love returns to practice on Wednesday, 12 days after reportedly suffering a sprained MCL on the final possession against the Eagles in Brazil.

Love stretched with teammates inside the Don Hutson Center, and then joined the rest of the team on Clark Hinkle Field for practice. Reporters are only allowed access to practice for a short time, but Love was seen doing the usual QB drills to start practice with a sleeve on his left knee.

Love was officially a limited participant in practice, and Head Coach Matt LaFleur did not provide much clarity following practice when meeting with reporters. However Love told reporters he is hopeful he can play.

LaFleur has said in the past Love would first need to be cleared by doctors to resume football activities, and then must be able to protect himself from further injury in order to play. The first hurdle has been cleared with Love returning to practice, time will tell if he will be cleared to return in time to play Sunday in Nashville.

If Love can’t play Sunday, Malik Willis will start against his former team. Willis was a 3rd round draft pick of the Titans in 2022, starting 3 games as a rookie. Tennessee traded him to the Packers at the end of training camp for a 2025 7th-round draft pick.

In Thursday Night Football Aaron Rodgers and the Jets travel to New England to take on the Patriots. Both teams are 1-1 on the season.

In a top five matchup in division 3 volleyball, #5 UW-Oshkosh defeated #3 UW-Whitewater 3-2.

The Titans had 62 kills, 59 assists, eight blocks, four aces, and 79 digs as a team.

Sami Perlberg led them with a career-high 20 kills, while Robyn Kirsch and Olivia Breunig had 11 and 10 kills.

UWO took the first set 25-18 only to see UW-Whitewater come back to take sets 2 and 3 25-13 and 25-22.

Oshkosh won the 4th by a 25-23 score and took the fifth and final set 15-10.
