Bryce Harper hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning to back up the strong pitching of Zack Wheeler and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Tuesday night in a matchup of division leaders.

Nick Castellanos added a solo shot and Trea Turner went 3 for 5 to help the Phillies move closer to wrapping up the NL East title while delaying the Brewers’ NL Central championship celebration.

The Phillies lowered their magic number for clinching the NL East to four. The Brewers’ magic number dropped to one with the Chicago Cubs 4-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Wheeler (16-6) boosted his Cy Young Award credentials by allowing only four hits and one run in seven innings while striking out six and walking none. Wheeler, who lowered his ERA to 2.56, has given up no more than two runs in each of his last nine starts.

The score was tied at 1-all until Harper sent a 1-1 pitch from Frankie Montas over the wall in left-center for his 29th homer of the season. Harper’s two-run shot also scored Kyle Schwarber, who led off with an infield single.

Montas (7-11) struck out 10 batters in 5 2/3 innings while allowing three runs, six hits and two walks.

Philadelphia extended the lead to 4-1 in the seventh as Schwarber hit a ball that went off a leg of pitcher Aaron Ashby and headed into shallow right field for an RBI single after Edmundo Sosa’s leadoff double.

Turner added a two-out RBI single off Enoli Paredes in the ninth.

Castellanos led off the second inning with a 430-foot drive over the wall in left-center for his 21st homer of the season. The Phillies put runners on first and second later in the second before Montas struck out Cal Stevenson to end the inning.

The Brewers tied it in the fourth, as William Contreras singled and scored on Garrett Mitchell’s triple to right center, but the Brewers stranded Mitchell at third.

The teams wind up their three-game series tonight. RHP Aa Nola (12-8, 3.82 ERA( starts for the Phillies against another right-hander, Freddie Peralta (11-8, 3.79 ERA). First pitch is at 6:40 at American Family Field.

Elsewhere n he NL Central Tuesday the Cubs lost to the A’s 4-3, the Reds nipped the Braves 6-5 and the Cardinals over the Pirates 3-1.The Brewers magic number to clinch the division is now one game, either a win or a Cubs loss.

In the Midwest League Tuesday night the Lake County Captains evened their playoff series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at a game-apiece with a 6-2 win at Lake County. They meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 5:35 CDT.

The Packers’(1-1) return to the practice field today in preparation for Sunday’s game at Tennessee against the Titans (1-1).

Meanwhile, after making his debut in Sunday’s win over the Colts, Packers rookie running back Marshawn Lloyd was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Lloyd had 6 carries for 15 yards and 1 catch for 3 yards in Green Bay’s 16-10 victory over Indianapolis in the home opener. Lloyd injured his ankle late in the game, but assured reporters on Monday that it would not be a long-term injury.

Lloyd’s offseason was injury-filled as well. He first dealt with a hip injury early in training camp, then injured a hamstring in the Packers preseason opener. The hamstring injury led to him being inactive for the regular season opener against the Eagles in Brazil.

Lloyd split his collegiate career between South Carolina and USC. His family traveled to see him make his NFL debut on Sunday, even with his game status in doubt for much of the week due to the hamstring injury.

In a corresponding move, the Packers signed RB Chris Brooks to the active roster from the practice squad. Brooks was signed to the Packers practice squad on Sept. 3 after spending his rookie year with the Miami Dolphins, where he totaled 106 yards on 19 carries last season.

Tua Tagovailoa’s latest concussion will sideline him until at least Week 8.

The Miami Dolphins are placing Tagovailoa on injured reserve, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday.

The Dolphins later officially announced the move.

Tagovailoa will miss at least the next four games before he’s eligible to return, per NFL rules. Miami has its bye in Week 6, so the earliest Tagovailoa could return is the Dolphins Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 27th

He missed a total of five games in 2022 because of two diagnosed concussions — including one which required a stretcher to remove him from the field in Cincinnati — and was shut down for the season after suffering his second concussion of the campaign in a Christmas Day game against the Green Bay Packers, missing Miami’s playoff game against the Buffalo Bills

Tagovailoa’s 2023 season was considered a great success, not only because he led the NFL in passing yards, but also because he managed to start in every game and avoid injury for the first time in his career. Miami rewarded Tagovailoa in the offseason, with the two sides agreeing to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension in late July.

The Week 2 collision once again threw his future into question, but the quarterback currently has no plans to retire, Rapoport reported Sunday,.

The Dolphins signed veteran quarterback Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad on Monday to add depth to their QB room with Tagovailoa out for an undetermined amount of time. Backup Skylar Thompson’s is in line to start Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Besides the actual game, a lot of conversation from fans at Sunday’s Packers home opener centered around concessions.

In-stadium vendors returned for the first time in five years, and some fans had difficulty finding water.

One concession item people claimed to have difficulty getting Sunday was water. Some even said it was a struggle before the game reached halftime.

The Packers released this statement.

“Due to the heat at yesterday’s game, there was very high demand for bottled water throughout the stadium.

Our concessions team prepared for the forecasted heat by stocking more water at the stands in line with what fans purchased at recent Lambeau Field events with similar high temperatures. But yesterday’s demand outpaced those estimates. Our teams worked to restock water at stands as soon as they ran low. Staff provided water in cups and also refilled empty water bottles upon request.

We appreciated fans’ patience as our teams worked to accommodate the heavy demand. Our teams will review the information from Sunday’s game and apply that to our planning for future games.”
