FDL COUNTY PURSUIT AND ARREST

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies picked up pursuit of a reckless vehicle that had struck multiple construction cones in Dodge County last evening. Multiple callers reported the vehicle varying in speeds and weaving all over the roadway. A deputy located the vehicle heading north on U.S. Highway 151 south of Thill Road in the Town of Oakfield. As the vehicle approached the deputy it nearly struck another vehicle. While trying to elude deputies the vehicle narrowly missed hitting a sheriff’s squad car positioned in the median with its emergency lights on. The 5-mile pursuit came to an end as the vehicle was boxed in. No one was hurt during the pursuit nor did any property damage occur in Fond du Lac County. The driver and lone occupant, a 34-year-old Green Bay woman, was taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail. A search of the vehicle turned up fentanyl pills. Felony eluding, first degree recklessly endangering safety, OWI first, and drug charges are being referred against the woman. The State Patrol assisted in the pursuit. MARKESAN EMAIL SCAM

Markesan Police say community members are receiving email notifications from someone whose email was hacked.  A police officer received an email from someone posing as community member saying they couldn’t buy gift cards right now but needed to get them for a friend that has cancer and asked if the officer could buy them online and send them to the person who had reached out to the officer. They promised to pay him back in the next week or when they saw him. The officer called the person who had supposedly sent him the email and were told that the company that they have their email through has been hacked. Markesan Police says if you get such a request it is a scam.

PAC SCAMS

The Administrator for the state’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says election season is also an opportunity for scammers posing as Political Action Committees or PACs. There are thousands of real PACs registered with the Federal Election Commission. Michelle Reinen says you have to be careful about giving to a PAC that actually supports a candidate or cause you believe in. She says scammers will only ask for donations under $200 to avoid having to disclose donor information to the F-E-C. She says they won’t volunteer information about their leadership and only take donations via mail to a post office box or peer-to-peer services like PayPal, Venmo, or cryptocurrency. She says they also will avoid the Federal requirement of asking if you are a U.S. citizen or are a Green Card holder. Reinen says a legitimate PAC would be registered with the F-E-C which you can check out at FEC.gov.

BACK IN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Fond du Lac County’s Director of Emergency Services says he’s glad to be back in the county emergency services sector. John Ross says it is something he has been doing since 2007 with a small stint in health care. He came to Fond du Lac County in April of this year after a couple of years in health care when the opportunity in Fond du Lac presented itself. He feels emergency management is where he belongs and where he feels he will be most effective in helping serve communities and helping build more resilient communities. Ross had previously worked in the West Central part of Wisconsin.  One of Ross’s roles is to help prepare and plan for disasters. Earlier this month he talked to us about Preparedness. September is National Preparedness month.

NEW REQUIREMENT FOR CDLS

The state’s Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles have implemented new Federal requirements for drug and alcohol status compliance and downgraded Commercial Driver Licenses or CDLs for noncompliance. New Federal drug and alcohol clearinghouse status checks require state DMVs to notify when CDL drivers do not pass their drug or alcohol testing. All Wisconsin CDL drivers who are not in federal compliance will have their commercial driving privilege downgraded until they clear their record with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. With a license downgrade operating a commercial vehicle is illegal. The commercial driver’s regular driving privilege will not be impacted. More information regarding the new rule and process can be found online.
