POTENTIAL EXPLOSIVES FOUND IN WAUPUN

A Good Samaritan cleaning up litter and debris from Rock River in Waupun while levels were low came across what appeared to be very old explosive devices potentially military related Saturday afternoon. Police responded to North State Street near Reinhardt Street just after 3 pm. Officers contacted Fond du Lac County Emergency Management who contacted the Department of Military Affairs for assistance. A Master Sergeant in Explosive Ordinance Disposal from the Wisconsin Air National Guard agreed that a response was needed to remove the devices. Police then contacted the Dane County Bomb Squad. About 7 pm, an assistant commander with the Bomb Squad arrived. The Squad removed the devices and took them to a safer location to determine what they are. It is undetermined whether the devices are explosives or what their origin are. Police are grateful to the citizen who was doing a good deed and contacted authorities.

BERLIN SCHOOLS REFERENDUM

Voters in the Berlin Area School District will be voting on an operational referendum for the school district during the November 5th election. District Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says they are asking for a total of about $7 million over four years beginning with just over $800,000 for the next school year. He points out they trimmed nearly $1 million from their budget the past year and will continue to make cuts whether the referendum passes or not so if it does pass the amount they ask for each of those four years could actually be lower. He says if it doesn’t pass the cuts will be more dramatic. The estimated average tax impact of a successful referendum would be a $38 increase per $100,000 of value on a property. Durtschi says over the past few years 85 percent of the school districts in the state have gone to an operational referendum.

ESOPAGEAL CANCER CASES INCREASING

A general surgeon for SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic urges those who suffer from constant and severe heartburn or acid reflux to have it checked out. Dr. Horace Lo sees patients at Ripon Community Hospital. He says it may be something that could be corrected with surgery. But he recommends asking your primary care physician about having an upper endoscopy performed to make sure it isn’t something more serious. He says antacids relieve the acidic symptoms but do nothing about recurring reflux. Dr. Lo says constant scarring from the stomach acid can lead to bleeds and ulcers and longer term can lead to a precancerous disease or even esophageal cancer. He points out over the past 15 years cases of esophageal cancer have increased significantly. Dr. Lo can be reached by calling 920-745-3540.

LATE LOTTERY CREDIT

The state’s Department of Revenue reminds eligible Wisconsin property owners that the deadline to apply for the late lottery and gaming credit for their 2023 property tax bill is October 1st. Each year, qualifying Wisconsin taxpayers receive a lottery and gaming credit on their property tax bills. Eligible property owners should check their 2023 property tax bills to ensure they have received the credit. If their December 2023 property tax bill did not show the credit, they can still file a late claim online application with the Department of Revenue through the Lottery Credit Online Application Portal by October 1st.
