MISPERCEPTION LEADS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSE AT FDL SCHOOL

The misperception of a caller led to a large law enforcement response to Evans Elementary School in Fond du Lac Thursday morning. Shortly before 10 am police responded to the school for a report of a male dressed in black clothing with a bandana on his head carrying what appeared to be a long gun and a bag strapped around his shoulder. The caller told the Fond du Lac County Communications Center the person had just walked into the north entrance of the school. Police and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the school. School district safety protocols for staff and students were followed allowing law enforcement to search and clear the school. The individual was located.  It turned out he was carrying a longer umbrella and had a single strapped pouch style bag around his shoulder. There was no threat to school safety. Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein commended the citizen for immediately reporting the perceived threat and the school district for initiating safety protocols.

FDL COUNTY WAITING ON WORD OF WEDC GRANT APPROVAL

Fond du Lac County was specifically mentioned in a bill in the state legislature that set aside $20 million for counties losing their two-year University of Wisconsin campuses. Fond du Lac County owned the land and buildings used by the UW-Oshkosh Fond du Lac when the campus closed in June. County Executive Sam Kaufman says he spoke in Madison when the bill came up for a hearing in the state legislature. Fond du Lac County had already started redeveloping what is now known as the Fond du Lac County Campus. Kaufman says they applied for the $2 million grant to help with the transition. The money is being administered by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. The grant needs the approval of the WEDC Board of Directors.

CITY OF BERLIN DEPARTURES

It is the last day in office for two Berlin city officials today. City Administrator Sara Rutkowski is leaving to take another public service job in another community and Alderperson Luke Dretske is moving to Ripon. Berlin Alderperson Emmett Durtschi says he and the city appreciate what Rutkowski has done for the city over the years. He says she is originally from Berlin and cared about her staff and the city. Meanwhile Dretske was about 5 months into a second two-year term serving Wards 1 and 7. Durtschi says he appreciated working along with Luke on the Common Council.  There is a posting for the City Administrator’s job on the city’s website and the city hired a firm to help with the search. Meanwhile, someone will serve in that role in the interim. Dretske’s replacement on the Council will be appointed to serve out his term which runs to April of 2026.

ARCHERY AND CROSSBOW DEER HUNT STARTS TOMORROW

The state’s Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that the archery and crossbow deer hunting seasons open Saturday. The two seasons run through January 5th, except in the 35 counties and metro subunits that have extended seasons open until January 31st.  Fond du Lac, Green Lake, and Winnebago counties are among those counties with extended seasons. The early archery and crossbow seasons are great opportunities for hunters to harvest antlerless deer before they change their patterns and experience additional hunting pressure during the gun deer season. Bonus antlerless harvest authorizations remain available in many counties.

HEARTBURN OR WORSE

A general surgeon for SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic says if you have heartburn or acid reflux on a regular basis you should have it checked out to make sure it isn’t something more serious. Dr. Horace Lo sees patients at Ripon Community Hospital. He says a hiatal hernia or a malfunctioning sphincter muscle between the esophagus and stomach can allow stomach acid to back up. Dr. Lo says a hiatal hernia pushes the stomach up through the diaphragm. He says antacids relieve the acidic symptoms but do nothing about recurring reflux. He points out symptoms recurring more than twice a week or interfering with daily activities are due to gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. He recommends seeing your healthcare provider to see if they would suggest an endoscopy to make sure it isn’t something more serious. There may be a surgical option to repair the hernia or strengthen the sphincter muscle. Dr. Lo can be reached by calling 920-745-3540.
