RIPON MAN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH EARLY MORNING CHASE

Bond has been set at $2,000 cash for a 38-year-old Ripon man facing charges for an early morning traffic chase on Tuesday, September 3rd in Ripon.  Jeremy Hoople made his initial appearance in Fond du Lac County court yesterday and has a preliminary hearing on October 25th. According to the criminal complaint Hoople fled when a Ripon Police officer tried to pull him over after running the license plate on the vehicle Hoople was driving and finding the vehicle’s registered owner had a revoked license and the vehicle’s license plate light was defective. The vehicle headed out of the city on Berlin Road and then turned north on South Koro Road. About a mile north of there the driver stopped the vehicle and took off on foot leaving a passenger behind. Police found out the registered owner had lent Hoople use of her vehicle. Sheriff’s Departments from Fond du Lac, Green Lake, and Winnebago counties and the State Patrol aided Ripon Police in the search for him that morning but didn’t locate him. Hoople left a backpack in the vehicle with his wallet, Wisconsin ID, and a container of marijuana in it. He is facing felony eluding, marijuana possession, obstructing an officer, operating a vehicle while revoked charges. He also had two felony warrants out for him, one from probation and parole, and the other from Waushara County.

PETER’S MURDER CASE STAYS IN ADULT COURT

The state’s Court of Appeals has ruled that the teenage boy charged in Lily Peters’ death will be tried in adult court. The court said the defense did not prove by moving the case to juvenile court, the seriousness of the offense would not be depreciated. The decision was released Tuesday morning. The three-judge panel took up the appeal in February after it was filed by the now 16-year-old’s lawyer. In January, a Chippewa County Court judge ruled the case would remain in adult court, but the teen’s lawyer appealed that decision. The teenager is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and sexual assault in the 2022 murder of Peters, who was only 10 years old. She was reported missing the night of April 24th, 2022. The next morning her body was discovered in the woods close to her home in Chippewa Falls.  The teen’s lawyer could petition the State Supreme Court to review the opinion otherwise the case proceeds to arraignment in adult court.

RIPON COMMON COUNCIL NOTES

The Ripon Common Council had a short agenda for their meeting last night tackling three different items in addition to the consent calendar and staff reports. The Council approved a low bid from Best Stump Grinding for $7,500 to grind 33 tree stumps from city terraces and parks. The Council also approved a lease agreement with Fond du Lac County to allow the County to put communications equipment on the industrial park water tower. The County previously had equipment on the tower but had to temporarily relocate it while the tower was being rehabilitated and recoated. A section of city ordinance was also repealed with the Council’s approval. This had to do with St. Wenceslaus as a one-way street from Bellville to East Sullivan Street. After improvements are completed, St. Wenceslaus will become a two-way street. Mayor Ted Grant says that will make the street safer for pedestrians and improve ease of access to the schools.

PERTUSSIS NOTIFICATION

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says with Pertussis on the rise across the country parents should be on the lookout for some type of notification from their kids’ schools. She says at this point a person with pertussis may have had exposure to so many different people that it is necessary for schools to notify parents that their children have been exposed to someone with the whooping cough virus. She says if your child has been vaccinated for Pertussis you may have nothing to worry about, but also look at it as an opportunity to find out what the next steps are if they have been exposed to someone with it and have symptoms. The pertussis vaccination is part of the DTaP or Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis vaccine.
