Milwaukee rookie Jackson Chourio hit two two-run home runs,  part of a six-homer, 20-hit barrage by the Brewers as they swept the Atlanta Braves with a 16-7 victory Thursday.

This was just the fourth sweep of the Braves for the NL Central-leading Brewers and second in Atlanta. The other was in 2016. The Braves, who gave up 36 hits over the past two games and were outscored 34-12 in this series, are on a five-game losing streak.

“To come here in their ballpark where we haven’t had a lot of success recently and play well all three days regardless of the outcome,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of what this sweep could mean going forward. “We played good defense, kind of unnoticed. Offensively, we scrapped and pecked away, ran pitch counts up and put balls in play.”

In addition to Chourio, who went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, the Brewers received home runs from William Contreras, Garrett Mitchell, Willy Adames and Jake Bauers.

Chourio, at 20 years and 150 days, became the youngest player in Brewers history with a multi-homer game. Billy Jo Robidoux, at 21 years and 266 days, set the previous record in 1985. Chourio also is the youngest player in baseball with such a game since since Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019.

Also for the Brewers, Contreras went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, Sal Frelick was 4 for 5 with two RBIs and Mitchell went 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs.

Atlanta’s Austin Riley went 2 for 5 with a three-run homer, and Marcell Ozuna was 2 for 4 with two RBIs that included a 440-foot solo homer to left field.

This was the seventh major league game this season in which both teams combined for at least eight home runs.

Right-hander Frankie Montas pitched the first four innings for the Brewers, running into trouble in the third inning when Riley homered, but otherwise was nearly unhittable. His first five outs came on strikeouts, and he finished with seven Ks while allowing just two hits.

Right-hander Elvis Peguero (7-3) relieved Montas and picked up the victory, pitching a hitless fifth inning with one strikeout and one walk.

Infielder Luke Williams pitched the final two innings for the Braves, giving up four hits and two runs.

The Brewers took an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning before Riley answered with his line-drive homer to left field. Milwaukee ended just about any doubts with five runs in the top of the fifth, with Chourio and Bauers each delivering two-run homers, to make it a 13-3 lead.

It was quite a contrast for Braves right-hander Charlie Morton, who allowed six runs to score in the first two innings with all on two outs. Morton (6-7) left after 2 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs — all earned. He also gave up a career-worst four homers.

Brewers RHP Aaron Civale (2-8, 5.14) will start the opener of a three-game home series against Cincinnati on Friday. It’s the beginning of a season-long 10-game homestand. First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Thursday the Padres nipped the Pirates 7-6, the Reds beat the Marliins 10-4 and the Rays downed the Cardinals 6-4. The Brewers now lead the Cardinals by seven games, the Pirates by nine and the Cubs and Reds by 9 ½ games.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost their third straight at Quad Cities 9-3. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders secured their second consecutive win on Thursday night at Herr-Baker Field with a 6-4 victory over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The win improved the Dock Spiders’ record to 27-40 overall and 14-20 in the second half.

The Dock Spiders will begin a two-game series at home on Friday against Lakeshore, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. On Friday, the team will celebrate Weaver’s Birthday Party. The evening will be dedicated to celebrating the beloved mascot’s birthday with his mascot friends from around the area. Fans can also enjoy post-game fireworks presented by Fond du Lac Credit Union.

The Packers held a short closed practice ahead of their preseason opener with the Browns.

Wide receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson returned to the practice field on Thursday. Reed missed the two previous practices due to a calf issue.

Watson never missed a rep after going down on the final snap of practice on Wednesday. The third year receiver said in the locker room afterward something hit his knee after Evan Williams interception.

As for the rest of the work on the field, Elgton Jenkins got a veteran rest day. Royce Newman got the first team reps at left guard in Jenkins place.

Rookie Jacob Monk got the lion’s share of the reps at right guard. Sean Rhyan was flagged for a false start on the first snap of team periods.

Now the attention turns to the first preseason game on Saturday.

Just how much Jordan Love will play against Cleveland is unclear. When QB1 exits the game, he will be replaced by back-up Sean Clifford.

It’s been an up-and-down camp for the second year QB thus far.

Clifford weathered the storm in his preseason debut a year ago in Cincinnati. Throwing an interception late in the first half, but then following up with a touchdown drive before the break.

Now it’s seventh round pick Michael Pratt’s turn to make his preseason debut this weekend.

Saturday will also be the first chance to see Jeff Hafley’s new defensive scheme in action against another team.

That unit, especially the secondary, have already seen plenty of success in camp going against their own offense. That includes Eric Stokes tacking on the 17th interception for the ball-hawking defense of camp on Thursday.

Saturday’s coverage on 102.3, The Bug, starts with the Packers Preview at 1:00 with the kickoff at 3:25.

There were two NFL preseason games Thursday night.  The Patriots beat the Panthers 17-3 and the Giants downed the Lions 14-3. There are three games tonight with Atlanta playing at Miami, Houston at Pittsburgh and Philadelphia is at Baltimore.

The Paris Olympics continued Thursday.

The U.S. men’s basketball team trailed by 17 points in the first half, plus faced an 11-point halftime deficit — the biggest one successfully overcome by an American team since NBA players were added to the Olympic mix in 1992 as the U.S. beat Serbia 95-91. Steph Curry scored 36 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:16 left, and the U.S. will play for gold in the Paris Olympics on Saturday night.

Noah Lyles lost the Olympic 200 meters Thursday, falling to Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and took the bronze.

Rice Lake’s Kenny Bednarek is a silver medalist for the second time as he finished runner-up to Letsile Tebogo in the 200-meters. Bednarek collects his second Olympic medal with a finishing time of 19.62 seconds, Tebogo winning in 19.46 seconds.

100-meter champion Noah Lyles took the bronze medal, while fellow American Erriyon Knighton would come home fourth.

Bednarek previously won a silver medal in the 200-meters at the 2020 Tokyo games.

In the medal count the U.S. leads with 103, including 30 golds, which leads all countries, 38 silver and 35 bronze. China is next with 73 medals, including 29 gold. France is third wihh 54 total medals and Great Britain is fourth with 51. The Olympics end on Sunday.
