MAN FOUND DEAD IN LAKE WINNEBAGO IDENTIFIED

Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials have released the name of the 64-year-old Oshkosh man found dead in Lake Winnebago last Friday night. Deputies, Town of Black Wolf EMS, and Oshkosh Ambulance responded to the Fahrney Boat Ramp at the Kalbus Country Harbor Campgrounds  for a report of a man found floating in the water. Boaters found David Prieto. Prieto was brought to shore and worked on by EMS staff. The County Medical Examiner’s Office eventually pronounced him dead at the scene. An unattended boat found in the lake belonged to him. Sheriff’s officials say while there was no evidence of trauma, the cause of death remains under investigation pending autopsy results.

INMATE DEATH AT WCI LIKELY SELF INFLICTED

Waupun Correctional Institution contacted the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office just before 7:30 Monday morning regarding an inmate death. Sheriff’s officials say the initial investigation is indicating that the death was likely a self-inflicted incident. It also shows that at the time of the discovery, staff responded rapidly and appropriately, providing medical aid in an effort to save the inmate’s life. It is the fifth inmate death reported at the institution since June of 2023 requiring an investigation.

WASHINGTON COUNTY MURDER UPDATE

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has released more information about a suspect and the murder of a 42-year-old Village of Richfield woman the early morning hours of August 1st. It happened in the 3500 block of Pleasant Hill. The 41-year-old Village of Richfield man is charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of his girlfriend and bond was set at $750,000 cash. He fired the handgun once, striking the victim and fatally wounding her. He then went into the residence and spoke with family members before the Sheriff’s Office received an abandoned 911 call from the residence a little after 4 am. Deputies responded to investigate and discovered the victim and took the suspect into custody.

MISSING MAIL INQUIRY

Hometown Broadcasting News looked into recent reports that a number of people in Ripon, Berlin, and Oshkosh had problems with missing mail at the beginning of July. The Ripon postmaster referred us to the United States Postal Service’s Corporate Communications office for Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. That in turn led to the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. We also contacted U.S. Senator Ron Johnson’s and Congressman Glenn Grothman’s offices to let them know about possible issues. Eventually the Corporate Communications office acknowledged there were issues. A spokesperson with the office said in an email response, “We’ve been made aware of customer concerns regarding mail service in the Fox Valley area and we’re making every effort to ensure this is resolved as quickly as possible.”

CONGRESSMAN GROTHMAN ON CONSTITUENT SERVICES

Congressman Glenn Grothman says if you have an issue with a government agency not to forget about his office’s constituent services. He believes hundreds of people forget they can call their Congressman about a problem. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says they typically handle issues people have with the Veteran’s Administration, Internal Revenue Service, and Immigration. He says problems frustrating people for months at a time get cleared up fast when his office intervenes. His office can also help if you have an issue with the postal service. Congressman Grothman has offices in Washington, D.C. and Fond du Lac. The phone number for his D.C. office is 202-225-2476 and for his Fond du Lac office it is 920-907-0624.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES UNDERGOING REVALUATIONS IN OSHKOSH

Commercial Properties in Oshkosh are currently going through the same reassessments that private property went through earlier this year. City Councilman Jacob Floam says if someone wants to dispute the reassessment they receive there is the opportunity to appeal and that information can be found on the Oshkosh City website. Floam says he would like to see the city have its reassessments done every three years so property owners don’t see such a major increase in their property assessments when they are done.  He says the last reassessment was done in 2017 and the one before that was performed in 2008. The new property values will be reflected on property taxes bills when they are issued this December.

Rony’s Recruit Fundraiser Continues

The Rony’s Recruit fundraiser to replace the retiring K9 for the Ripon Police Department continues to gain steam. Beau, Reid and Gage Mueller recently hosted a lemonade and food stand on behalf of the fundraising effort. The boys were able to raise over $3,000. Meanwhile Webster’s Marketplace is selling Rony’s Recruit Paws at their registers through August 16th hoping to match up to the first $5,000 in donations. That effort will be capped by a brat fry at Webster’s on Saturday, August 17th from 10 am to 2 pm. Police Officer Lindsey Michels says it is a great time to see Rony and interact with their officers. She says this fall or winter Officer Brandon Howell will be training with the dog that will replace Rony when he retires. Rony recently turned 11 years old. (Ripon Police Department photo).
