SHORT VEHICLE CHASE IN FDL COUNTY
A 26-year-old Manitowoc man trying to evade a traffic stop in Fond du Lac County Sunday afternoon took a turn onto a dead-end road. It happened on State Highway 23 near County Highway UU in the Town of Empire when a Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a Toyota Camry going 126 miles an hour in a 65-mile an hour zone. The deputy was closing the distance when the driver turned onto Richards Road, which is a dead-end road. The driver continued to try and elude the deputy by driving into the backyard of a private residence. Witnesses directed the deputy to the location of the suspect near the residence and the driver was taken into custody The Manitowoc man is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on charges of felony fleeing and eluding, second-degree reckless endangerment and he was cited for several traffic and county ordinance violations. The chase lasted 1.5 miles.
PURSUIT ENDS AFTER MOTORCYCLIST CRASHES
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies cut off the pursuit of a speeding motorcycle last night but got a second chance after the biker crashed. A deputy tried to pull over the bike just before 6:30 pm after observing the motorcycle driving with no registration plate on Interstate 41 northbound near Hickory Street in the Town of Fond du Lac. The suspect sped up. Deputies were set up to assist but the pursuit was terminated after 7 miles when the motorcyclist increased speeds and his driving behavior became erratic at Winnebago Drive. A State Trooper at the Winnebago County line advised the suspect had not passed them. At 7:07 pm a deputy observed the motorcycle matching the description from the pursuit on Pioneer Road near Melody Lane. The deputy attempted a traffic stop and the motorcycle stopped at the entrance to Ashwood Grove. The motorcycle had fresh damage and the driver fresh injuries. He admitted he was the suspect from the pursuit, and he had crashed after the pursuit was terminated. He denied medical attention. The driver is a 22-year-old Milwaukee man. He is being charged with felony fleeing and eluding and was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail.
WAUTOMA POLICE WARN OF FACEBOOK SCAM
Wautoma Police say a post on Facebook about a lost elderly woman was part of a scam. They point out scammers often post urgent missing persons’ notices on market pages. Once they get a bunch of shares it will be changed to an advertisement. Police say a good way to tell when it is a scam is that they turn off the comments and they tag the community with a hashtag. A different version of the scam sometimes asks for money. This post in particular said a woman showed up at a home in Wautoma, did not know where she was and perhaps had dementia. A photo of the older woman showed her clutching a baby Yoda doll supposedly belonging to the poster’s daughter. The post suggested flooding feeds with the post to help find the woman’s family.
TWO RIPON PROJECTS VY FOR STATE BUILDING COMMISSION GRANTS
State Senator Joan Ballweg says the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area and the Ripon Public Library have applications in with the State Building Commission for projects in Ripon. Ballweg is a member of the State Building Commission. She says they set aside $50 million in the State Budget for non-state building project grants. For the Boys & Girls Club it would be used to help fund the building of a facility in Ripon and for the Library for their expansion project. She says the projects seem to fill the bill as far as the criteria needed which includes being a worthy project, having matching funding, and having an impact on the local economy. The state lawmaker from Markesan says there is a lot of competition for the grant money so she’s hoping the two projects will get a slice of that funding. The State Building Commission’s next meeting is Wednesday at the State Fair Park in West Allis.
AMBULANCE REIMBURSEMENT RATES
Ripon Guardian Ambulance EMS Chief Mitch Matuszeski says one of the reasons they have a hard time with their expenses is because Medicare and Medicaid only reimburses them for a portion of the cost for an ambulance run. He says a new program from the state will reimburse more for Medicaid patients but it won’t make much of a dent in their costs. He says with Medicare for example if it cost them $1,200 for an ambulance run they will likely get reimbursed from $300 to $400 of the actual costs. Matuszeski says unfortunately with Medicare they have no choice, they either accept the reimbursement or don’t accept Medicare at all and have to bill patients the full cost which people can’t afford. He notes this year they are on pace for more than 1,800 ambulance calls the most they’ve ever had in a year’s time.
