FDL COUNTY SHERIFF’S SCAM ADVICE
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is offering advice to residents about recent scams. Among the latest scammers contact victims via telephone and ask them to pay “taxes” on prize winnings in the form of gift cards, cash, or money orders. There has also been an increase in scammers asking for cash to be left in victims’ mailboxes for pickup. They have also seen scams where victims are contacted by people impersonating an officer or deputy and asking for money to be paid to get a loved one out of jail or to pay for warrants. Sheriff’s officials say if you feel you are being contacted by a scammer, don’t share any personal information with them. Contact a trusted friend or family member, your local bank or law enforcement to discuss the details of the potential scam. You can always block the scammer’s phone number to prevent further contact from that particular number. If you suspect you are being contacted by a scammer that is impersonating law enforcement report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 920-929-3390 or your local law enforcement.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF THE RIPON AREA CANDIDATE FORUM CANCELLED
A forum in Ripon for the two candidates for the 6th Congressional District seat has been cancelled because one of the candidates did not respond to an invitation to participate by an August 8th deadline. Ellen Sorensen is president of the League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area. She tells us incumbent Republican Congressman Glenn Grothman did not respond by the deadline for the August 28th forum at the Ripon City Hall. Sorensen says FCC rules indicate a forum cannot be held for only one candidate. Grothman’s challenger in the November election is Democrat John Zarbano of Oshkosh. The League holds forums and panels to educate voters.
ROSENDALE BRANDON SCHOOLS IN SERVICE MESSAGE
Rosendale-Brandon Schools Superintendent Wayne Weber gave an inspiring message to staff during an in-service day before the district welcomed back students last week. It was about CARE an acronym standing for collaboration, accepting responsibility, resiliency, and engagement. He says they also talked about the school mission and vision. He says they want to be a district where people want to be including parents, students, and staff. Weber says polls show that only about a third of the workforce is engaged and committed to their work and their place of work. He says they want their staff to be engaged and well above that national average.
OSHKOSH TRUCK STUDY
Later this year the Oshkosh Common Council will vote on recommendations that grew out of a truck route study. The Council was given a presentation on the study last month. Council member Jacob Floam says the study involved industry stakeholders, the Chamber of Commerce, and some of the larger manufacturers who depend on trucking. Ultimately it is about rerouting traffic away from the downtown corridor while also being more efficient for the trucking companies themselves. Floam says it isn’t easy for the truckers either because of the narrow roads, sharp turns, and other driving concerns so it is also about making it simple for them and the city.
VETERANS BACKYARD BASH
Preparations are underway for the 5th Annual Veterans Backyard Bash in Fremont Labor Day weekend. It will feature food, beverages, music, a 5k/10k walk-run, raffles, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, fireworks and more. It will be held at W 309 Archer Drive. Brad Lind organizes the event with help from a board of directors. It is literally in his backyard. All the proceeds go toward helping veterans with their medical needs. He says they really don’t have any problems finding veterans who need their help. Lind says Community Benefit Tree, a nonprofit organization, also helps them find veterans who need assistance. The Bash is Friday, August 30th from 6 to 10 pm and Saturday, August 31st from 8 am to 11 pm. There is no cost to get in. That Saturday at 4 pm they have a special ceremony where they hand out challenge coins to veterans to thank them for their sacrifices. A complete list of activities can be found at a link on the Veterans Backyard Bash Facebook page.

CRIME VICTIMS RIGHTS SILHOUETTE DISPLAY
Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, the CAP Services Family Crisis Center and Waupaca County District Attorney Kat Turner, are raising awareness about the rights available to crime victims through a compelling display of silhouettes at the Waupaca County Courthouse. The display will be available to view next Monday. It is an interactive showcase of red-painted silhouettes symbolizing individuals affected by crime. Each silhouette will feature one of the rights granted by Wisconsin’s Crime Victims’ Rights constitutional amendment, also known as Marsy’s Law. The silhouettes will be equipped with QR codes linking individuals to the websites for Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, the CAP Services Family Crisis Center, and the Wisconsin Office of Crime Victims’ Services for further details. Waupaca County District Attorney Kat Turners says, “Our goal with the silhouette display is to educate the public on their rights under Marsy’s Law and the victim services offered by our office and in those available in our community.” The display will be open from 9 am to 4 pm Monday inside the Waupaca County Courthouse.
