The NFL 2024-25season kicked off Thursday night with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio between the Bars and the Houston Texans. The Bears came away with a21-17, rain-shortened comeback victory. The game was called in the third quarter because of severe weather in the area.

Chicago’s Brett Rypien was 11-15 passing for 166 yards and three touchdowns.  Neither team played any of their starters.

The 2024 Paris Olympics continue. On Thursday, swimmer Katie Ledecky became the most decorated woman in American history.

With a silver medal Thursday in the 4×200 meter relay, Ledecky won her 13th medal, breaking a tie with swimmers Natalie Coughlin, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres.

Ledecky has eight golds, four silvers and one bronze in her Olympic career. The eight golds are just one shy of the women’s record, held by Larisa Latynina, a gymnast from the Soviet Union whose final Olympics was in Tokyo (1964).

The 27-year-old Ledecky also becomes the most decorated woman in swimming history, regardless of country, and is second only in the Olympic pool to American icon Michael Phelps, who has 28 medals all-time.

Also gymnast Simon Biles won her second gold of the Olympics and in so doing becomes Team USA’s most decorated gymnast with an 8th Olympic medal.  Biles, who has won two golds so far, helped the U.S. win the women’s team event on Tuesday, took gold in the Women’s Artistic Individual All-Around on Thursday. It was  her sixth career gold medal. American Suri took home the bronze.

The United States leads in total medals won with 38, nine gold, 16 silver and 13 bronze. France is next with 27 medals and China has 26 and leads with 12 gold.

The Paris Olympics end on Sunday, August 11th.

The Green Bay Packers say their vocal endorsement of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley isn’t just idle talk. For one thing, it isn’t just the defensive players singing his praises.

“Just talking to the offensive linemen, talking to the offensive players and having that back and forth, those guys are telling us the defense looks a lot different,” defensive lineman Kenny Clark said. “It’s encouraging.”

Hafley left his job as Boston College’s head coach to return to the NFL, where he had worked from 2012-18 with Tampa Bay, Cleveland and San Francisco, to rejuvenate a defense that wasn’t living up to the draft capital the Packers invested in that side of the ball.

The early results suggest Hafley’s making a difference.

Either the offense or defense generally must do pushups at the end of every Packers workout, depending on which unit got outplayed. Clark pointed out Thursday that the defense has only had to do pushups once so far.

“I just appreciate the buy-in and how hard they’re going, because they are going and they’ve been disruptive,” Hafley said.

The defense dominated the first week of training camp, while starting quarterback Jordan Love was sitting out workouts with his contract situation unresolved. The offense has improved since Love started practicing again Saturday after signing his four-year, $220 million extension, yet the defense has continued making big plays.

Hafley is taking over for Joe Barry, who lasted three seasons as defensive coordinator but was fired after the Packers’ 24-21 NFC divisional playoff loss at San Francisco. Hafley’s arrival included a scheme change, with the Packers going from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

Green Bay’s 2023 defense included eight former first-round selections in Clark, Jaire Alexander, lineman Devonte Wyatt, edge rushers Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness, linebacker Quay Walker, cornerback Eric Stokes and safety Darnell Savage. Although Savage has since left for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the other seven first-round picks remain.

Now they must produce better results. The Packers ranked 17th in total yards allowed per game and 28th in rushing yards allowed per game last season.

Saturday night is Family Night at Lambeau Field, where a sellout crowd will be on hand. A full practice will be held.

The Packers are ialso ntroducing a new all-white uniform for the 2024 season that includes a white helmet. Even the Packers ‘G’ logo is white, surrounded by a dark outline. The face mask is also white.

A white helmet is a first for the Packers. The players have always protected their heads in gold or yellow helmets since the days of brown leather. Even throwback uniforms only went so far as removing the Packers G logo and stripes.

The Packers will introduce the uniforms on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Packers call it their first “Winter Warning” game, celebrating “Packers fans’ legendary energy during even the harshest of winter conditions.”

The Packers started teasing the new uniform in photos and videos on X, formerly Twitter, declaring “A whiteout is coming.”

The tops and pants still have the green and gold stripes, but players will wear solid white socks.

The team released a video Thursday morning showing players opening a white box.

The Packers have played in all-white uniforms before, pairing their white jerseys with white pants bearing the green and gold stripes.

According to the Packers website, the NFL and Nike introduced the “Color Rush” in 2015 to let teams wear a special uniform for Thursday Night Football games. The Color Rush expanded to other games, including Monday Night Football in 2019.

The Packers are asking fans to wear white to the October 20 game against Houston to create a “whiteout effect” in the stands of Lambeau Field.

Fans entering the stadium will receive a white scarf from American Family Insurance.

There’s also merchandise from the “Winter Warning Collection” for sale at the Packers Pro Shop, including shirts, outerwear, caps, and replica helmets.
