Santiago Espinal had two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Cincinnati Reds beat Milwaukee 4-3 on Sunday to snap the NL Central-leading Brewers’ five-game winning streak.
The Reds avoided a sweep and beat the Brewers for just the 13th time in their last 47 meetings. The Brewers won two of three from the Reds this weekend for their ninth straight series victory against them.
“We’re all aware of it,” said Cincinnati’s Tyler Stephenson, who hit his 15th homer of the season. “I feel like we’ve played really ompetitive games against, especially the game last night (a 1-0 Brewers victory. Anytime you can walk out of here with a win is huge.”
Joey Ortiz hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee.
The Reds broke a 3-all tie against Joe Ross (2-6) in the seventh inning. After Espinal hit a leadoff single and advanced to second when Jonathan India grounded out, Ross walked Elly De La Cruz intentionally and Tyler Stephenson unintentionally to load the bases. Espinal scored on Spencer Steer’s sacrifice fly to the left-field warning track.
The Brewers hit into inning-ending double plays in the seventh and eighth before Alexis Díaz retired the side in order in the ninth for his 23rd save in 25 opportunities.
Milwaukee’s William Contreras was ejected from the game by home-plate umpire Phil Cuzzi after grounding into a double play in the eighth.
DL Hall pitched for the Brewers for the first time since April 20 after spending nearly four months on the injured list. Hall hurt a knee while fielding a bunt back in April and had some setbacks that delayed his return.
Hall had a career-high nine strikeouts and worked 4 2/3 innings in his sixth career start, but he was unable to protect an early 2-0 lead. Ortiz had put Milwaukee ahead with his two-run homer off Nick Lodolo in the second inning.
Cincinnati tied the game in the fourth. After Steer singled, Stuart Fairchild walked and TJ Friedl was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Espinal knocked home two runs with a two-out single to shallow center.
Stephenson put the Reds ahead with two outs in the fifth when he sent a 2-2 fastball over the right-field wall.
The Brewers tied the game in the sixth. Gary Sánchez walked and advanced to third on a Contreras double before the Reds removed Lodolo from the game. Willy Adames then greeted Buck Farmer (2-0) with a bloop hit to left that brought home Sánchez.
The Brewers had runners on third and second with one out but couldn’t take the lead, thanks to some solid defense from the Reds.
Espinal went to his right to field Blake Perkins’ bouncer to second before throwing out Contreras out at the plate. Ortiz ended the inning by grounding out on a nice play by third baseman Noelvi Marté.
The Brewers placed LHP Hoby Milner on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with left shoulder impingement. The Brewers also transferred RHP Enoli Paredes to the 60-day injured list.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders secured their fourth consecutive win on Saturday night at Herr-Baker Field, closing out the season with a 12-6 victory over the Lakeshore Chinooks. The Dock Spiders finished the season with a 29-40 overall record and a 16-20 mark in the second half.
Jordan Love made the most of limited playing time, throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks on Green Bay’s third play as the Packers rolled to a 23-10 exhibition win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
Love, who signed a four-year, $220 million contract extension at the start of training camp last month, completed both pass attempts in his one series on the field. Sean Clifford replaced the 25-year-old Love.
The Packers have faith in Love following in the footsteps of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers to continue Green Bay’s lineage of great quarterbacks. He led the Packers to 10-9 record last season in his first year as a starter.
On Green Bay’s first possession, Love waited for Wicks to get behind safety Ronnie Hickman before hitting him in stride for an easy, quick-strike score.
A fifth-round pick from Virginia last year, Wicks came on strong at the end of his rookie season, scoring four TDs in a three-game stretch before being blanked in the divisional playoff loss to San Francisco.
While the Packers got Love some work, the Browns rested starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is coming off right shoulder surgery.
Watson has thrown almost every day in camp and appears to be on track to start the Sept. 8 season opener against Dallas. But the Browns are remaining cautious with Watson, who has been limited to just 12 games in his first two seasons with Cleveland.
Backup QB Jameis Winston started for the Browns and played just one series. He went 4 of 5 for 30 yards.
Player of the Year, wide receiver Amari Cooper and Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio.
Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur took a different approach, choosing to give many of his starters at least some playing time.
Clifford may have solidified his spot as Green Bay’s No. 2 QB, completing 10 of 19 passes for 111 yards. The former Penn State standout attempted just one pass as a rookie in 2023. Seventh-round pick Michael Pratt went 5 of 7 for 46 yards.
One of Cleveland’s few bright spots was Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He went 14 of 18 for 134 yards. Thompson-Robinson, who made three starts as a rookie last season, is battling Tyler Huntley for the No. 3 job.
Green Bay’s kicking competition between Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph remained highly competitive. Carlson, who struggled at times as a rookie in 2023, made field goals of 46 and 33 yards and converted his only extra-point attempt. Joseph booted a 35-yarder and made a PAT.
Packers: Rookie RB MarShawn Lloyd went out with a hamstring injury. The third-round pick from USC had one carry for 8 yards. … CB Robert Rochell was treated in the medical tent during the second quarter for an apparent shoulder issue.
The Packers are at Denver Sunday night. Kickoff is at 7:00.
