The School Nutrition Association of Wisconsin (SNA-WI) presented state Representative Scott Krug (R-Nekoosa) with an SNA-WI 2024 Legislator of the Year award at its annual meeting in La Crosse on Tuesday, June 25.
Representative Krug was named a 2024 SNA-WI Legislator of the Year due to his strong leadership in working towards increasing state funding in the fiscal year 2023-2025 state budget for school districts that serve breakfast. In addition, he introduced Assembly Bill 645, which would have allowed county governments to provide assistance to non-profit organizations that operate food relief programs. Finally, he co-authored AB1013 and co-sponsored SB948, both of which create a statewide healthy food incentive program. The Governor signed AB1013 into law on March 25.
“SNA-WI greatly appreciates Representative Krug’s strong leadership in working towards increasing the state’s school breakfast per-meal reimbursement rate, which has not increased since 2012. School nutrition programs, including the School Breakfast Program, are critical to the academic performance of Wisconsin K-12 students,” said Bobbie Guyette, SNA-WI president. “Unfortunately, the combination of a flat state appropriation since 2012, inflation, and continued growth in the School Breakfast Program has resulted in lower reimbursement rates each year for participating schools,” continued Guyette.
SNA-WI is a chapter of the national School Nutrition Association and represents nearly 900 school nutrition professionals who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across Wisconsin. SNA-WI and our members recognize that healthy eating behaviors support better learning, and school nutrition programs help fight hunger, promote healthy eating habits, and allow students to reach their full potential.
