7/6/24 Manawa and Other Areas Experience Flooding

6 July 2024 News

People in Manawa evacuated from their homes Friday due to flooding and the threat of a dam collapse were allowed to return to their homes in the early evening. Public health officials also declared a “Boil Water Advisory” for Manawa and surrounding areas. That type of advisory is issued when drinking water may be unsafe to drink and requires the boiling of tap water. Waupaca County Emergency Management also issued a flood emergency for the waters of the Wolf River downstream of the City of New London implementing a slow-no-wake zone for the area. According to the National Weather Service the dam in Manawa was breached at about 1:45 pm by floodwaters. The structural integrity of the dam remained intact. Because the dam was breached because of land erosion alongside the dam, the Manawa mill pond across Bridge Street was drained. Officials say about 5 inches of rain fell in a few hours Friday. Because of the flooding situation the Manawa Rodeo and Parade activities for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled. Flooding was also experienced in Waupun and New Holstein. Meanwhile Flood Warnings continue for Fond du Lac and Waupaca County. In Fond du Lac County it is for the South Branch of the Rock River at Waupun and in Waupaca County for the Little Wolf River at Royalton.
