Jake Cave hit his first home run of the season to snap a sixth-inning tie, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Thursday night to gain a split of the four-game series.

Charlie Blackmon had two hits, including a two-run double for the Rockies.

Cave homered off Tobias Myers (5-3), driving a 1-0 offering over the fence in straightaway center. It was his first home run since the Rockies acquired him near the end of spring training in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Brewers trailed 3-0 but pulled within a run on Andruw Monasterio’s two-run single in the fourth inning off Cal Quantrill, who had walked the bases loaded around a flyout and a groundout. Anthony Molina (1-0) came on in relief to start the sixth and walked Rhys Hoskins ahead of Jackson Chourio’s tying RBI double.

Jalen Beeks got the last four outs for his seventh save.

The Rockies put up the first three runs and Blackmon was at the center of the scoring. He singled off Myers to start the game, advanced to second on Ezequiel Tovar’s sacrifice and scored when Ryan McMahon doubled.

Blackmon added his two-out, two-run double in the second.

Quantrill allowed two runs on five hits in five innings and finished with two strikeouts and four walks.

He struck out Christian Yelich in the first inning for his 500th career strikeout, becoming the 16th Canadian player to do so. The group includes his father, Paul Quantrill, who pitched in the majors for 14 years.

Myers allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked one but his streak of five straight winning decisions came to an end.

The Brewers head to Los Angeles to play a three-game series against the Dodgers. RHP Aaron Civale, who went 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts for Tampa Bay this season, was acquired by the Brewers in a trade Wednesday, and is slated to start Friday night’s opener against the Dodgers’ RHP Tyler Glasnow (8-5, 3.23 ERA). First pitch is at 9:10 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Cardinals nipped the Pirates 3-2, the Reds downed the Mets 8-4 and the Cubs pounded the Phillies 10-2.  The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 games, the Reds by 9 ½, the Pirates by 10 and the Cubs are 12 games behind.

In the Midwest League Thursday, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers shutout Beloit 9-0 at Fox Cities Stadium. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.

The Dock Spiders dropped the final game of their four-game stretch against Lakeshore on Thursday, losing 13-9. A nine-run sixth inning propelled the Chinooks to victory over the Dock Spiders.

The Dock Spiders now head to Wausau for the first of two games on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. They will play their next four games on the road before returning home next Tuesday to face Madison. Ladies on Tuesday night, can plan on additional ticket and drink offers at the ballpark courtesy of Quest Interiors. Plus, all fans can enjoy live music by D. Willy and the Souvenirs before and after the game! Additional Tuesday, is Bang For Your Buck with 107.1 The Bull – Enjoy hot dogs, 16 oz. The Milwaukee Brewers acquired veteran right-hander Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday in the NL Central leaders’ latest attempt to boost a starting rotation that’s been decimated by injuries.

The Brewers sent promising minor league infielder Gregory Barrios to Tampa Bay, which assigned him to Class-A Bowling Green, and designated right-hander Taylor Clarke for assignment to make room for Civale on the 40-man roster.

The 29-year-old Civale has gone 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts this season, though he has been better of late, pitching to a 3.82 ERA over his last seven outings. He was 7-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 23 starts for Cleveland and Tampa Bay last year.

Civale owns a 33-32 record with a 4.10 ERA in 103 career starts. He will be arbitration eligible after the season and is under club control through 2025.

The 20-year-old Barrios was batting .325 with a .367 on-base percentage, one homer, 34 RBIs and 18 steals in 61 games at the Class-A level. He provides Tampa Bay with some organization depth in the lower level of the minor leagues.

In other moves Wednesday, the Brewers placed third baseman Joey Ortiz on the 10-day injured list, placed right-hander Enoli Paredes on the 15-day injured list and recalled infielder Vinny Capra and right-hander Janson Junk from Triple-A Nashville.

Ortiz has neck inflammation and Paredes has right forearm tendinitis. Ortiz’s assignment is retroactive to Tuesday.

The addition of Civale comes eight days after the Brewers acquired left-hander Dallas Keuchel from the Seattle Mariners. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner has no record with a 6.75 ERA in two starts with Milwaukee.

Shohei Ohtani became the first player elected to start at designated hitter in four straight All-Star Games, joined by New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge as the only holdovers in the lineups announced Wednesday for the July 16 game at Arlington, Texas.

Philadelphia could have three of the four National League infielders after fans voted shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm to start alongside first baseman Bryce Harper, whose status is uncertain because of a leg injury.

Major League Baseball said this is the first time each league has had no more than one player repeat as an elected starter since fan balloting resumed in 1970.

Six teams have two starters each: Yankees outfielder Juan Soto was voted in alongside Judge, who gained his berth last week with Harper as the top vote-getters in the first round of balloting. The second round was from Sunday until Wednesday.

Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman and shortstop Gunnar Henderson were elected along with Houston second baseman Jose Altuve and DH Yordan Alvarez; Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez and outfielder Steven Kwan; San Diego outfielder Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr.; and Milwaukee catcher William Contreras and outfielder Christian Yelich.

Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte also were voted in.

Philadelphia last had three elected infielders in 1982 with Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt and Manny Trillo. Harper went on the injured list on June 28 because of a strained left hamstring but could return ahead of the All-Star Game.

Pitchers and reserves will be announced Sunday.

27-year old Hayden Springer entered the first round of Thursday’s John Deere Classic having missed the cut in six of his last seven starts, though he’d shown progress by notching a T-10 last week in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. At TPC Deere Run, he reached a level he’s never found before.

With eight birdies and two eagles—including an unexpected 55-yard pitch-in at 17 and birdie at 18— Springer shot 12-under-par 59 on the par-71 course. The score gave him a two-shot lead over Sami Valimaki.

He’s the winningest coach in UW-Oshkosh football history, soon to be Titan’s Hall of Famer Pat Cerroni (Induction set for August 3rd). In November of 2021 announced he was retiring after 15 seasons, but his retirement was pretty short lived.

After spending the last two years as a co-HS defensive coordinator in Alabama, now Cerroni is headed to the D-1 FBS college level joining the coaching staff at Kansas in a quality control position.

His new “boss”, Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold, was once Cerroni’s longtime rival at UW-Whitewater.
