Willy Adames hit a three-run homer in the sixth and rookie Jackson Chourio added a two-run shot in the eighth to lift the Milwaukee Brewers past the Atlanta Braves 8-3 on Monday night.
Adames’ 416-foot home run, his 17th of the season, came off reliever Jesse Chavez (1-2) and put the Brewers in front 4-2. Joey Ortiz’s run-scoring triple in the seventh gave Milwaukee a three-run margin and Chourio’s homer, his 12th of the season, gave the Brewers a five-run edge.
Marcell Ozuna hit his 31st homer of the season off Milwaukee starter Colin Rea. It careened off a window above the second deck in left to lead off the fourth for the game’s first run. Center fielder Garrett Mitchell took away a would-be home run from Eddie Rosario to end the inning.
Orlando Arcia’s solo homer in the fifth gave Atlanta a two-run cushion before Rhys Hoskins’ home run in the bottom of the inning off Grant Holmes cut the Braves margin to 2-1.
Holmes, a 28-year-old rookie right-hander who spent nearly 10 years in the minors before being called up in mid-June, made his first career start. He struck out the side in the first and, after allowing consecutive singles to start the second, struck out three more batters. Holmes gave up three hits and one run in five innings. He struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk.
Milwaukee starter Colin Rea went 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits, both solo homers, while striking out six and walking two.
Hoby Milner (4-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief of Rea to get the win.
Hoskins drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to extend Milwaukee’s lead before Sean Murphy hit a solo home run in the ninth for Atlanta.
The Brewers placed closer Trevor Megill on the 15-day injured list prior to the game, one day after the return of two-time All-Star Devin Williams, who had been out all season with stress fractures in his back. Milwaukee began the game with 10 pitchers on the injured list.
RHP Bryce Elder is the starter for the Braves tonight. The Brewers have not named a starter but it could be newly acquired Frankie Montez from the Reds. First pitch is at 7:10.
In other Brewers news, in a rare trade between division rivals that broke during Milwaukee’s homer-fueled, 8-3 win over the Braves at American Family Field on Monday, the Brewers are sending long reliever Jakob Junis, Triple-A outfielder Joey Wiemer and cash to the Reds for 31-year-old right-hander Frankie Montas, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, fortifying a rotation that already has used 16 different starters this season — including Junis.
The next Brewers starter will be No. 17, matching the franchise record. Again, it could be Montas, who was scheduled to start in Cincinnati against the Cubs on Tuesday.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Reds beat the Cubs 7-1, the Rangers beat the Cardinals 6-3 and the Pirates over the Astros 5-3. The Brewers lead the Cardinals and Pirates by seven games, the Reds by 10 and the Cubs are 11 games out.

The Packers return to Ray Nitschke Filed today after having a day off Monday. So far, the defense has been the biggest story. On Sunday, it was a pair of rookies coming away with interceptions.
Seventh round selection Kalen King had a big day overall, and capped it off with an interception off Jordan Love in the final team periods of practice. The rookie out of Penn State also had a nice pass break-up going against Samori Toure during 1-on-1′s earlier in practice.
Fellow rookie Evan Williams hauled in his second interception in as many days. That one comes on his 23rd birthday no less.
There were a few highlights for the offense and Love on Sunday. A connection between Love and Jayden Reed led to a would-be touchdown. Fellow second year receiver Dontayvion Wicks had one of his better days of camp with big gains against Eric Stokes and Xavier McKinney.
Center Josh Myers also returned to the field after missing practice for personal reasons. Guard Elgton Jenkins was not on the field as he got an off day, his second of training camp thus far.
On the injury front, safety Zayne Anderson was out on Sunday due to a knee issue. Joining him on the sidelines were defensive linemen Deslin Alexandre (leg) and Keshawn Banks (groin). Rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd (hip) and safety Kitan Oladapo (toe, NFI) remain sidelined as well.
The United States women’s basketball team is likely to get stronger as the Olympics wear on, as it builds chemistry and gets reps playing together. But, in the meantime, it sure is a luxury to have superior size.
The Americans leaned into that advantage in their Olympic opener, bruising the smaller Japan team in a 102-76 victory in a rematch of the 2021 gold medal game in Tokyo. They are now 56-0 in the Olympics since 1992 as they take the first step toward winning their eighth consecutive gold.
Japan’s tallest player stands 6-foot-1, and Team USA has six players that height or taller. That differential was the defining aspect of the game.
Team USA racked up 64 points in the paint, repeatedly getting into positions for entry passes or offensive rebounds that punished the smaller opponent.
A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart took turns going to work in the interior. Wilson was relentless in looking for her shot and chasing loose balls, making 10 of 16 shots for 24 points and adding 13 rebounds, six of them coming on the offensive end. She also had four blocks.
The United States leads in the medal count with 20, including three gold, eight silver and nine bronze. France is next with 16 medals while Japan and China have 12 each. Japan leads with six gold medals.
