PLANE RETURNING FROM EAA MAKES EMERGENCY LANDING IN DODGE COUNTY

No one was injured when a plane on its way back to Georgia from EAA AirVenture made an emergency landing in a farm field in Dodge County Sunday morning. Sheriff’s officials say just before 8:30 am they received numerous reports of a plane flying low that sounded like it was having engine issues. A short time later it landed in a farm field in the area of Raasch Road and County Highway TW in the Town of Hubbard. The 28-year-old Georgia man flying the plane told law enforcement officers he was losing power and wasn’t able to make it to an airport so he put it down in the field. A second plane traveling with him also landed to check on him. Both were flying back to Georgia from AirVenture. No one was injured and no property was damaged.

LITTLE WHITE SCHOOLHOUSE BACK ON THE LIST

The Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Friday announced the Little White Schoolhouse has been added back to the National Register of Historic Places. The recognition comes after the application was reviewed and approved by the Wisconsin State Review Board in May. The application was subsequently submitted to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, an official with the National Park Service, where it received final approval.  The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mandy Kimes says, “We believe the Little White Schoolhouse is a centerpiece of Ripon’s history and heritage and can’t wait to welcome many visitors for years to come.”

RIPON AND WAUPUN COMBINED POSITION

The Ripon Common Council last week created the combined position of building inspector and zoning administrator and will partner with the City of Waupun on the position. Ripon City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the next step is posting the position. He says Grand Valley Inspection Services wasn’t filling all the needs they had for the position. He says the position has evolved since they first contracted with Grand Valley in 2018 and they would like to do more with the position including enhancing economic development processes. He says both Ripon and Waupun can benefit from the position and hopefully it will be more cost effective as well.  Ripon’s contract with Grand Valley Inspection Services actually expired this past January.

MIND YOUR WAKE

The state’s Department of Natural Resources reminds all boaters to monitor their speed and control their wake while underway, as it can negatively affect other boaters and aquatic ecosystems and cause shoreline erosion.  Some helpful reminders to help boaters responsibly manage their wakes include maintaining a safe speed. Always adhere to posted speed limits and reduce speeds in congested areas like channels. Avoid repetitive passes in the same location. Watch your wake. Be aware of the size and impact of your wake. Large wakes can cause damage to other vessels and docks, erode shorelines and even swamp or capsize other boats. Respect no-wake zones. These areas are specifically designated to protect wildlife and reduce shoreline erosion. Teach your passengers. Ensure all aboard your boat understand wake safety and the rules. More generally, boaters simply need to be mindful of each other and remember to share the water with other users.

GREEN LAKE COUNTY FAIREST OF THE FAIR

Green Lake County’s Fairest of the Fair Madison Mertens is somewhat familiar with the role she has to play during this week’s County Fair. Madison was the Fair Attendant last year to the County’s Fairest and Junior Fairest of the Fair. Madison graduated from Berlin High School in 2023 and is entering her sophomore year at North Dakota State University where she is studying agricultural education, hoping to become an Ag teacher. She says she enjoyed showing animals at the Fair as she was growing up and this year will be showing a pig and a sheep. She has different duties at the Fair which runs this Thursday through Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Green Lake. One she looks forward to for kids will allow them to enjoy milk and cookies and practices some crafts. She also recommends enjoying the fair food. The Green Lake County Fair is a free event. More information about it can be seen at the County’s website.

FIRST RESPONDER COMMUNITY FESTIVAL A SUCCESS

Green Lake County Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk says the County’s version of National Night Out, the Green Lake County First Responder Community Festival last week went well. He says the Markesan Police Department did a nice job of hosting the event at Hein Park. They got help from the Markesan Fire Department and Green Lake County Ambulance Service. He says their department brought their drones, boats, K9s, and more. In addition there were dunk tanks, sack races, other activities, prizes, and food. Vande Kolk says it is a great opportunity to interact with kids and the community. He says their deputies and personnel enjoy it too because they are part of the community as well.
