Christian Yelich will avoid season-ending back surgery, at least for now.

The Athletic reporting the Brewers all-star outfielder will instead opt to try re-hab at this point this his bad back.

The former MVP went on the 10-day Injured List Wednesday after trying to battle through pain. But he had batted just 0-for-9 since the All-Star game and is just 1-for-19 dating back to before the break. He’s currently hitting .315.

Yelich missed a month earlier this season with a similar back issue. Offseason surgery is reportedly a strong possibility for Yelich,

The Brewers had an off-day Thursday but return to the field tonight in Miami against the Marlins. Freddy Peralta (6-5, 3.88 ERA) starts for Milwaukee against Miami left-hander Trrevor Rogers (1-9, 4.59 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 CDT.

There were no games Thursday in the NL Central. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by six games, the Pirates by seven, the Reds by 10 and the Cubs by 11 games.

Dylan Cease pitched the second no-hitter in San Diego Padres history Thursday, a dominant performance in a 3-0 victory over the Nationals on Thursday afternoon. There to greet him with a bear hug on the infield grass was Joe Musgrove. Musgrove now has company.

Forced to wait through a 76-minute rain delay before he took the mound, Cease struck out nine, walked three and — most importantly — allowed no hits.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged Beloit 3-2. The T-Rats improved to 60-32 while the Sky Carp drop to 44-46. First pitch is at 6:35.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders took game one against the La Crosse Loggers on Thursday night at Copeland Park, winning 9-6. With the victory, the Dock Spiders improved to 20-34 overall and 7-14 in the second half.

The Dock Spiders finish up their series on Friday with La Crosse, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

After and off-day Thursday, the Packers return to Ray Nitschke Field today.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news on a new Jordan Love contract extension. The fifth-year quarterback is at practice but no participating in drills.

Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh has signed a five-year contract extension that includes a pay raise.

McIntosh’s contract will now run through June 30, 2029. He has served as Wisconsin’s athletic director since Barry Alvarez’s retirement in the summer of 2021.

In the release announcing McIntosh’s extension, Wisconsin said he will make $1.45 million in base salary this year with an annual $50,000 escalator clause that would increase his pay to $1.5 million the following year.

Under that escalator clause, McIntosh would make $1.65 million the final year of his contract.

McIntosh’s original contract had given him a base compensation of $1 million for 2024.

His contract will be funded by a combination of athletic department revenues and UW Foundation gift funds designated for athletics.

McIntosh, 47, has worked in Wisconsin’s athletic department since 2014. He was an All-American offensive tackle for Wisconsin before the Seattle Seahawks selected him with the 22nd overall pick in the 2000 draft.

Players from defending national champion Michigan and Ohio State claimed seven of the Big Ten’s 12 positional honors on Tuesday.

They were selected by a media panel on the first of three conference media days in Indianapolis.

The Buckeyes had four selections — safety Caleb Downs, receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end JT Tuimoloau. The Wolverines selections consisted of defensive tackle Mason Graham, defensive back Will Johnson and tight end Colston Loveland.

Dillon Gabriel, who left Oklahoma for Oregon, was named the league’s top quarterback. Iowa linebacker Jay Higgins, Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter and Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai rounded out the selections.

Fifty-four players and 18 coaches will be in Indianapolis for the annual media day festivities at Lucas Oil Stadium. Ohio State was one of six schools to open the first day on the three-day schedule.
