OMRO ROBBERY AND SHOOTING SUSPECTS CHARGED
Charges have brought in Winnebago County against a 45-year-old Milwaukee man and 27-year-old Green Bay woman accused of robbing and assaulting a man in Omro and leading authorities on wild chase with a U-Haul. Bond has been set at $500,000 cash for Omah Brown and $250,000 cash for Shakierra Ray. They will be back in court next week. According to the criminal complaint the victim, a 65-year-old Omro man, placed a car on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for sale. Brown and Ray responded to the ads setting up a meeting on July 15th at the victim’s home to look at the vehicle. Brown tried to pay the victim with a cashier’s check. The victim suspected the check wasn’t real and handed it back to him. After a test drive the victim asked Brown and Ray to leave his garage and that’s when Brown allegedly pulled a gun. There was a struggle for the gun and it went off hitting the victim in the left hand. As a result of the assault the victim received four staples to his head and his left ring finger needed to be amputated. Brown and Ray led authorities on a wild chase in Winnebago and Fond du Lac counties afterwards that culminated with a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy using his vehicle to push the suspect’s through a busy Fond du Lac intersection, spin it sideways and off the road.
SEX OFFENDER WHO LIVED UNDER AN ASSUMED NAMED IN PRINCETON SENTENCED
The U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin says a 33-year-old sex offender has been sentenced to 15 months in prison and 5 years of extended supervision for failing to register as a sex offender while living under an assumed name in Princeton, Wisconsin. A federal judge Tuesday sentenced Celio Deluna who was using the name “Cody Banks.” On May 23rd, 2014 Deluna was convicted in Cook County, Illinois for aggravated criminal sexual assault causing bodily harm for having sex on several occasions with a 13-year-old victim. He was sentenced to six years in prison and completed that sentence on May 20th, 2019. After his release from prison he moved to Oklahoma and failed to register as a sex offender. Last September he traveled from Oklahoma to Princeton, Wisconsin and began living there under the name of “Cody Banks.” Ultimately he was arrested in Princeton. Deluna admitted to using an alias to circumvent his registration requirements and to conceal his status as an immigrant who is not authorized to live in the United States. “Cody Banks” was the name of a movie character “Malcom in the Middle” star Frankie Muniz played in the 2003 film “Agent Cody Banks.”

DODGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PARTICIPATING IN SPEED AWARENESS DAY
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement officers throughout the Midwest next Wednesday for this year’s Speed Awareness Day enforcement campaign. The speed awareness campaign has a twofold approach: to combine increased zero-tolerance enforcement with effective communication to road users on the importance of obeying the speed limit. High Visibility Enforcement is a proven countermeasure for re-enforcing driver compliance with posted speed limits. Simply put the goal of the campaign is to save lives. Sheriff’s officials say there is no reason to speed, it is unnecessary and endangers everyone on the road.

RIPON COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES AGREEMENT FOR JOINT SERVICES
The Ripon Common Council approved an ordinance this week to share a building inspector/zoning administrator position with the City of Waupun. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Council the current agreement with the firm Grand Valley Inspection Services wasn’t meeting all the city’s needs. He says some of the work was falling on city staff. Sue Leahy of Grand Valley has been performing the building administration and zoning administrator services for Grand Valley. Sonntag says Grand Valley has been performing those services since 2018, but their contract with the firm expired at the end of last year. Council member John Splitt who has been involved in construction in the area since 1979 says Grand Valley has done a great job and he could line up ten contractors who would back him up on that. The Council passed the Shared Employee Agreement by a 5 to 2 vote. It will also need the approval of the Waupun Common Council. In other action this week the Ripon Common Council approved an amendment to a development agreement and the public cruising request from Ripon Main Street for the annual Scoop the Loop celebration that will be held on Saturday, August 3rd.

Howell says they are doing updates for all 33 municipalities they work with. Howell told the Ripon Common Council they’ve held six business, retention, and expansion sessions with Ripon businesses this year. In addition Raina Lyman, Envision’s Director of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, holds regular hours in Ripon. She has done 118 hours in the city this year, met with 5 entrepreneurs through their entrepreneurship development program, and met with 13 entrepreneurs individually to provide technical assistance. Howell says their economic development team also meets with City Administrator Adam Sonntag frequently.
STIGMA AWARENESS EVENT
Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it is difficult enough to recover from substance abuse disorders but for those going through recovery and their loved ones there is the added issue of the stigma that goes with it. She says that’s why they hold events like the 2nd Annual Stigma Awareness event which will be at the Gratitude Club in Fond du Lac next month. It is about raising awareness of stigma and barriers for individuals seeking recovery. Hours for the event on Saturday, August 17th are from 2 to 6 pm. The featured speaker at 3 pm is Tom Farley, an advocate for substance use awareness and prevention. Tom’s late brother was comic Chris Farley. A local speaker panel will share their stories about substance use, loss and recovery at 4:30 pm. Mueller says the event is great way to get a better understanding about the stigma that recovering from substance abuse carries. In the last 3 years Fond du Lac County has lost 65 individuals to overdose deaths.
THE ELVIS JET CAR
Elvis’s private jet rides again, sort of, and it can be seen this week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The original jet was sold at auction for $260,000 to a Florida man. Another man, who goes by the handle of Grizzly, restored it for him in a manner of speaking. The Elvis Jet Car consists of the fuselage from the plane mounted on an RV chassis. Grizzly says they finished the conversion last Friday and made the 1,658 mile trip from Florida to Oshkosh. Here are some of the vitals on the jet car. It is 38 feet long, 101 inches wide, and stands 11 feet 6 inches tall. Grizzly says the interior of the fuselage contains some of the original Elvis perks and a few additions including the seats, a couch, original color TV, VCR, 8-track player and a microwave. He says it takes about an hour to gas up the Elvis Jet Car, not because of the 82 gallon gas tank but because no matter where they stop people want pictures and want to talk about the car.
DEADLINE COMING UP FOR TURKEY PHEASANT AND WATERFOWL STAMP DESIGN CONTEST
There is a week left to submit artwork for the DNR’s Wild Turkey, Pheasant and Waterfowl Stamp design contests. The winning designs will appear on the 2025 collection of stamps. Each year, local artists from around Wisconsin compete for an opportunity to have their artwork commemorated in a historic way on the wild turkey, pheasant and waterfowl stamps. Sales of these three stamps bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for species management throughout the state, including habitat management, restoration, education and research projects. Hunters are required to purchase stamps to harvest these game birds. Stamp design entries must be received or postmarked by Thursday, August 1st. Judging will take place on August 24th at the Waterfowl Hunters Expo in Oshkosh. Rules, entry information and reproduction agreements are available on the DNR’s Wildlife Stamp Funding and Stamp Design Contest webpage.
