Monday marked the first day of the Packers training camp and one player noticeably did not suit up for practice.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love did not participate in training camp until a contract extension is done.

Love’s agency informed the Packers on Saturday of the decision, but Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is optimistic a deal will get done in the coming days.

“Yeah I think so, but you never know. We are working really hard to get it done and I think it is really important for us. At the same time, the thing I have confidence is, we both want the same thing. We want Jordan here for a long time and to give that stability to him and gives us stability for our group as well,” Gutekunst added on the current negotiations.

Meanwhile the Packers have agreed to terms on a three-year, $64 million contract extension with defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Clark will be paid $29 million for this season.

The 2024 season was set to be his final under contract, but now the 9th year pro will be making more than $150 million over his career.

The three-time Pro Bowler had 44 tackles, a career-best 7.5 sacks, three passes defensed and two forced fumbles this past season.

The Brewers lost 3-1 to the Cubs Monday at Wrigley Field.  The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in their half of the third then scored single runs in the 4th and 6th innings. The Brewers scored their only run in the 8th and managed just 5 hits and committed an error. The Cubs had 8 hits. Todd Smyly took over in the 4th inning with one out and pitched 1 2/3 innings and picked up the win for Chicago.  Hector Neris notched his 14th save.

Tobias Myers (6-4) started for Milwaukee and gave up all 3 runs, 2 earned, on six hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. Willy Adames drove in the only run for the Brewers.

They play again tonight with Milwaukee sending Colin Rea (9-3, 3.77 ERA) to the mound against Chicago right-handed Jameson (7-4, 3.10 ERA.). First pitch is at 7:05.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Pirates edged the Cardinals 2-1 and the Reds beat the Braves 4-1. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 5 gems, the Pirates by 6, the Cubs by 9 and the Reds are 9 ½ out.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers play at Beloit tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.

Wisconsin will begin selling alcohol in general seating areas at Camp Randall Stadium this season.

The university’s decision, announced on Monday, leaves Nebraska and Northwestern as the only two schools who aren’t allowing general seating alcohol sales in the now 18-team Big Ten. Alcohol sales are also set to begin this season at Michigan Stadium.

Wisconsin will also allow alcohol to be sold at UW Field House, home to the women’s volleyball and men’s wrestling teams. It was already available at Kohl Center for men’s and women’s basketball games and LaBahn Arena, home to women’s hockey.

The option to purchase alcohol is common at collegiate athletic venues all over the country and we’re glad that we can now offer it as part of the fan experience at Camp Randall,” Wisconsin Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin said in a statement. “I appreciate the work our athletic and administrative teams have done to put together a plan that balances this opportunity with public safety.”

The alcohol sales begin with the home opener against Western Michigan on Friday, Aug. 30.

Fans will be allowed to purchase only two drinks at a time per person. The university police department will have an increased presence at games, the school said.

A portion of the revenue from alcohol sales will provide financial support for campus-led efforts to promote student wellness and to encourage responsible behavior around the use of alcohol.
