JURY TRIAL SCHEDULED FOR FDL COUNTY GANG SHOOTING SUSPECT
A four-day jury trial has been scheduled next January for one of the two Fond du Lac men suspected of a gang related shooting. Twenty-year-old Lamarion Moore was in Fond du Lac County court for a hearing Monday. A final pre-trial conference is scheduled for December 19th with a jury trial January 13th through the 16th. Moore and 18-year-old Adamite Willey were both charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide for a shooting at a Fond du Lac gas station on May 23rd of 2023. No one was injured in the shooting, but bullets struck the car a person was sitting in seven times. According to the criminal complaint the shooting was in retaliation for a shooting at the Maplewood Commons Apartments on May 7th of last year which left 20-year-old Tatyanna Zech dead and several wounded. In April Willey pled no contest to an amended charge of first degree recklessly endangering safety and was placed on probation for four years. Parise Larry Jr. and Antonio Johnston are charged with Zech’s homicide. Both have jury trials next February. The two shootings were connected to a beef between two gangs. CROWDSTRIKE CRASH SCAMS
In light of the CrowdStrike crash last Friday the Oshkosh Police Department is urging the public to be alert for possible scams targeting individuals attempting to reschedule flights, access banking information, or address technology issues. No incidents have been reported in Oshkosh yet. Scammers may attempt to impersonate CrowdStrike support, sending files that claim to resolve the crash but instead contain malware. Avoid clicking on links or opening any files from unknown sources. Key things to watch out for include phishing emails or text messages posing as someone directly involved with the event, offering support to customers. Scammers may impersonate incident staff in phone calls. Posing as independent researchers, claiming to have evidence the technical issue is linked to a cyberattack and offering remediation insights. They may sell scripts purporting to automate recovery from the issue.
RIPON EVENT BARN REQUEST DENIED
The Ripon Common Council voted 4 to 2 last night to deny a rezoning request and conditional use permit for the proposed Ripon Event Barn, LLC at 835 Liberty Street. Following public comments by neighbors concerned about what impact the operation would have on them the Common Council discussed the rezoning and conditional use permit at length. At first a motion to approve the request died from lack of a second, and another motion to send it back to the plan commission to include an additional conditional use and a review at the end of the year failed on a 4 to 2 vote. The motion to deny then was approved. Mayor Ted Grant several times told the Council that such requests are based on the highest and best use of a property, and he believed the event barn was. He said otherwise the owner Wayne Chaney’s only other option for the property is turning it into multi-family housing, which also would not be pleasing to neighbors. Making a final plea Chaney said from 1901 to the mid-1990’s the property operated as a honey farm, and he thought using the barns and home as an event venue was a way of preserving some of the property’s history.

The tablets, which were provided free to each person, allow for secure phone calls and messages to be sent to friends and family.

LISTERIA OUTBREAK REPORTED
State health officials are reporting a listeria outbreak that is linked to meats sliced at delis. Specific products related to the outbreak haven’t been identified yet. Listeria can be more serious for people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system. These groups should not eat meats sliced at deli counters, unless they have been reheated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit or until steaming hot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says two people have been killed and 28 others hospitalized, including one case in Wisconsin. The outbreak has impacted people across 12 states. The deaths occurred in Illinois and New Jersey. States hardest hit were New York, which reported seven cases and six cases in Maryland. CDC data showed the ages of the sick people range between 32 and 94 with the median being 75. The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety and Inspection Service is working to identify the suppliers of the meats sliced at deli counters during the outbreak.

COVID CONTINUES TO BE A HEALTH RISK
COVID 19 continues to be a health risk in Fond du Lac County. A few cases have been reported in the past few weeks. County Health Officer Kim Mueller says actually a variety of illnesses have been reported including the flu and pertussis. She recommends rest and plenty of fluids no matter what you may be suffering from, and staying home from work or school will help to prevent its spread. MILITARY CONSUMER PROTECTION MONTH
Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection are taking time this month to remind the public about scams that prey on active military service members, veterans, retirees, and their families. In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission received over 192,000 reports from military consumers. One-third of those reports indicated losing money to fraud. Total losses were $477 million. Top fraud categories included imposter scams, online shopping and negative reviews, investment related scams, and identity theft. Michelle Reinen is the Administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection. She says while just fewer than 4,000 reports of investment scams don’t seem like much it equated to a massive loss. Those just under 4,000 investment scams added up to $147 million in losses. There were also over 39,000 reports of identity theft. Reinen says military consumers are disproportionately targeted by scammers. Housing scams and fake government benefits are another area military consumers should be careful about. July is Military Consumer Protection Month.
AIRFORCE WORKHORSE ON DISPLAY AT EAA
Among the aircraft on display at EAA AirVenture this week is one of the U.S. Air Force’s workhorses, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III-a large military transport aircraft. Lieutenant Colonel Eric Floorsheets is stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He says the Globemaster III has been used in the Middle East and is capable of being used on all seven continents. He says it is a very versatile aircraft. It can be used for air transport, air drops, low-level flight, and assault landings. He notes it is capable of carrying just about anything including personnel, bullets, bombs, machinery, army equipment, helicopters, and more. Floorsheets says normally they have a crew of three with two pilots and one load master, but for longer days they will use three pilots and two load masters.
