Willy Adames had a homer and four RBIs, Garrett Mitchell homered for the first time in more than a year and the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a series sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Adames hit his 15th homer off Amos Willingham with two outs in the eighth to put Milwaukee up 9-3. He also doubled and singled twice.

Mitchell, who missed the first 84 games this season with a fractured finger, put the Brewers up 6-2 in the fourth with his homer. Adames capped the inning with an RBI single.

With the win, the Brewers avoided their first four-game losing streak of the season and go into the All-Star break 4 ½ games ahead of second-place St. Louis, despite going 3-7 in their last 10 games.

Colin Rea (9-3) allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings after coming on for opener Rob Zastryzny. Rea struck out seven and walked one.

Jake Irvin (7-8) allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in four innings for the Nationals.

William Contreras also homered for the Brewers. His one-out solo shot in the third inning was his 11th of the season.

Washington got one back in the fourth when Lane Thomas singled to open, stole second and scored on Juan Yepez’s one-out single to left.

Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the first on consecutive two-out doubles by Christian Yelich and Adames.

The Nationals answered with one in the second off Rea, who relieved after Zastryzny retired the first four batters. Rea walked Yepez, who stole second and scored on Ildemaro Vargas’ two-out single.

After the Al Star break, the Brewers begin the second half with five games on the road, two at Minnesota, followed by three vs. the Cubs.

Help could be on the way for the Brewers heavily worked bullpen with closer Devin Williams taking a positive step towards a return.

The reigning National League Reliever of the Year has been out since spring training due to stress fractures in his back. On Sunday, he made his first rehab appearance with the Timber Rattlers, Milwaukee’s high-A affiliate in Grand Chute.

Williams was efficient in his one inning of work. Throwing nine of his 14 pitches for strikes, and finished with three strikeouts.

Elsewhere in the NL Central the Marlins edged the Reds 3-2, the Pirates over the White Sox 9-4 and the Cubs beat the Cardinals 8-3. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 4 ½ games, the Pirates by 6 ½, the Reds by 8 and the Cubs are 8 ½ behind.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat West Michigan 5-3. There are no games scheduled today.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders held on for a 5-4 win on Sunday over the Minnesota Mud Puppies at Herr-Baker Field. With the victory, the Dock Spiders’ record improved to 17-29 overall, and 4-9 in the second half.

With the No. 17 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft on Sunday night, the Brewers selected Braylon Payne, an outfielder from Elkins High School in Missouri City, Texas.

Payne, who turns 18 on Aug. 14, is one of the youngest players in the ‘24 Draft. He is ranked the No. 53 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. Whether his selection at No. 17 — which carries a pick value of $, 534, 100 — came as a surprise to some, the Brewers knew they had their guy.

Payne is the first of the Brewers’ four selections on Sunday. They drafted University of Tennessee first baseman Blake Burke 34th overall — a pick they acquired from the Orioles in the Feb. 1 trade of Corbin Burnes.

Milwaukee also selected prep right-handers Bryce Meecage (No. 57 pick) and Chris Levonas (No. 67, Competitive Balance Round B) on Sunday. Meccage, from The Pennington School in New Jersey, was the No. 51 overall Draft prospect, while Levonas, from Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey, was ranked No. 59 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 250 Draft Prospects.

Payne, a center fielder, bats and throws left-handed and has plus speed. According to MLB Pipeline, he has 70-grade speed on the 20-80 scouting scale.

Robert McIntyre won the Genesis Scottish Open Sunday.  The Scotsman hit a birdie on the 18th hole to edge Adam Scott by one stroke.

In the men’s Wimbledon Finals Sunday Carlos Alcaraz of Spain beat Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to win the title for the second straight year.   It was also his fourth Grand Slam championship.

On Saturday Barbara Krejcicova won the women’s Wimbledon champisonship 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 over Jasmine Paolini for her second Grand Slam title.
