REACTION TO ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

The FBI early Sunday identified the shooter who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday. He was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the upper part of his right ear, one rally attendee was killed, and two others wounded. Law enforcement officials killed the shooter. Trump’s campaign said Sunday he is looking forward to speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.

Wisconsin politicians commented on the assassination attempt. Governor Tony Evers said his thoughts were with President Trump and he and his staff are in contact with those coordinating security planning for the RNC.

During an interview on CNN yesterday U.S. Senator Ron Johnson said, “Let’s take this moment of tragedy and turn it into a process of national healing and unity.

State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac said, “My thoughts and prayers are for President Trump and those injured in Pennsylvania. This divisiveness in our country needs to stop.”

Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman said, “Violence against any candidate running for office, regardless of political views is unacceptable and must be condemned by all.”

GOVERNOR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY

Governor Evers signed an executive order Friday declaring a state of emergency for Calumet, Outagamie, Waupaca, and Winnebago counties as communities continue to recover from flooding the first week of this month. The governor’s declaration comes after heavy rainfall in Northeastern Wisconsin caused flooding in several counties, forcing some residents to evacuate on July 5th in the cities of Appleton and Manawa. The high rain amounts also led to a dam embankment breach in Manawa. During this time, the National Weather Service said four to six inches of rain fell in Waupaca County, with 5.7 inches of rain falling in Manawa. Roughly one to four inches of rain fell across parts of Outagamie and Calumet counties. Wisconsin Emergency Management has been working with counties to assess damage and determine resources needed to speed recovery efforts. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is also monitoring the situation and working with nursing homes to ensure residents and staff stay safe and healthy. The governor’s declaration allows DHS to pay for extraordinary expenses that can arise when a facility is evacuated, like a portion of the cost of temporary housing or emergency nursing home repairs.

DNR ANNUAL DRINKING WATER REPORT

The state’s Department of Natural Resources recently published its 2023 Annual Drinking Water Report, showing that more than 99 percent of the public water systems in Wisconsin met all water quality standards for contaminants. The report summarizes compliance with the drinking water requirements and highlights statewide efforts to help public water systems provide a safe and sustainable supply of drinking water. DNR officials say the impressive scorecard is possible because of the joint efforts between public water system owners and operators, the DNR, and many partners. They say $155 million in federal funding and Governor Tony Evers investment of $10 million in ARPA funds to expand on the state’s Well Compensation Grant program also helped. Most of the extra funding went toward lead service line replacement and addressing emerging contaminants. By the end of 2023, more than 1,860 Wisconsin public water systems obtained PFAS monitoring test results according to the DNR”s established drinking water standard for two PFAS chemicals.

BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING SCAMS

With people trying to get a jump on their back-to-school shopping, the Administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection advises watching out for possible scams. Michelle Reinen says scammers will be sending out fake ads pretending to be trusted businesses like Amazon and big box retailers and promising unbelievable savings. What they want is for you to click on a link that sends you to an imposter website that allows them to take your personal information or money. She recommends verifying the website before you order or pay for anything to make sure it is actually associated with who you believe you are shopping from. She says you can do that by typing in the website yourself to make sure you are not being misdirected. Other recommendations include comparing deals and sales whether you’re shopping online or in a store. When you are going through a store’s checkout line double check that your items have been priced correctly.

PICKLEBALL INJURIES

An orthopedic surgeon with SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic says as Pickleball continues to grow in popularity they are seeing more injuries associated with the sport. Dr. Benjamin Wiseley sees patients in both Fond du Lac and Ripon. He says typical injuries are from overuse, but they also see injuries for the novice player that may not be physically active and decided to take up the sport.  Injuries include sore elbows, shoulders, or knees from physical activity people might not be used to. Another overuse injury they see is “Pickleball elbow” which is similar to “tennis elbow.” It is an inflammation or irritation of one of the large tendons on the outside of the elbow. He says the only way for that to heal is to take a break from the sport to allow the injury to heal. Examples of more acute injuries would be sprained ankles and pulled hamstrings. Dr. Wiseley recommends warming up and cooling down from Pickleball with stretching exercises.
