Paul Skenes struck out 11 in seven no-hit innings in another dominant performance, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Thursday.

Skenes threw 99 pitches in his 11th major league start, 65 for strikes. The All-Star right-hander walked one while lowering his ERA to 1.90.

Colin Holderman replaced Skenes (6-0) and surrendered a leadoff single to Jake Bauers for Milwaukee’s first hit. The Brewers loaded the bases with two down in the eighth, but Holderman escaped the jam when he struck out William Contreras swinging.

Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth for his fourth save, finishing a two-hitter for Pittsburgh.

Milwaukee wasted a terrific performance by Aaron Civale (2-7), who pitched six-hit ball into the seventh inning. The NL Central leaders lost for the fifth time in seven games.

The Pirates scored their only run in the seventh. Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on a leadof single, but he was erased when Jack Suwinski bounced into a fielder’s choice.

Yasmani Grandal then doubled into the gap in right-center, and Suwinski scored from first with a headfirst slide.

Civale was replaced by Bryan Hudson after issuing a walk to Andrew McCutchen. Hudson then got Bryan Reynolds to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

The Brewers continue their home stand with a weekend series against the Nationals tonight. Jackson Rutledge (0-0, 9.00 ERA) will start for Washington against Freddy Peralta (6-4, 3.95 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 from American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Reds beat the Rockies 8-1 and the Cubs shutout the Orioles 8-0. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 5 games, the Pirates by 8 ½ and the Cubs and Cardinals by 9 games.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged West Michigan 3-2. The T-Rats improved to 54-30 while the Whitecaps fell to 41-43. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40 from Fox Cities Stadium.

Brewers closer Devin Williams and third baseman Joey Ortiz are both set for rehab stints with the Timber Rattlers this week.

Williams is scheduled to pitch in relief at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday night. The reigning National League Reliever of the Year has been out since suffering stress fractures in his back mid-way through Spring Training.

This past week Williams threw live batting practice at American Family Field. Now he moves along to the next step with rehab start with the team’s high-A affiliate in Grand Chute.

Ortiz was in the lineup for the Timber Rattlers on Thursday night. His stint on the injured list has been much shorter, landing on the IL due to neck inflammation on July 3rd.

This season Ortiz is batting .269 and has an OPS of .817 to go along with seven home runs. Ortiz has settled in as the Brewers’ primary third baseman after being acquired from Baltimore in Corbin Burnes trade during the offseason.

A two-run ninth inning propelled the Dock Spiders to a 13-11 victory on Thursday in game one of a doubleheader at Kapco Park in Mequon over Lakeshore.

In the second game a five-run fourth inning lifted Lakeshore over the Dock Spiders on Thursday night at Kapco Park in Mequon, ending in a 5-2 defeat. With the loss, the Dock Spiders moved to 16-27 overall and 3-7 in the second half.

The Dock Spiders return home on Friday for the next six games, starting with a doubleheader against Wausau, with the first pitch of game one at 5:05 PM and game two to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The first 500 fans on Friday will receive a 2023 Draft Class Card Set Giveaway presented by Real Sportscards. Additionally, stick around after the game for post-game fireworks presented by LEB Insurance Group.

The hall of fame is one step closer to reality for a former Green Bay Packers player.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame posted on social media a video of Julius Peppers opening the box containing his gold jacket. The jackets are worn for induction activities.

Peppers played for the Packers from 2014-16 during a career that also included 10 years with the Carolina Panthers and four with the Chicago Bears. The linebacker recorded 25 of his 159.5 career sacks with Green Bay.

Peppers is part of a seven-person class that also includes defensive tackle Steve McMichael (who played for the Packers in 1994), defensive end/outside linebacker Dwight Freeney, linebacker Randy Gradishar, returner/wide receiver Devin Hester, wide receiver Andre Johnson and linebacker Patrick Willis.

Induction is set for Aug. 3 at the hall of fame in Canton, Ohio.

Justin Thomas posted an 8-under 62 — one off the course record of 61, which is held by multiple players — to lead Sungjae Im by one and everyone else by two or more after 18 holes of play in North Berwick, Scotland. Thomas had 8 birdies. Rory Mcllroy is 3 strokes back after shooting a 65.
