MARKESAN MAN WANTED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER CAPTURED

Columbia County Sheriff’s officials say a 28-year-old Markesan man is in custody wanted in connection with a stabbing at the Alsum Produce facility in Randolph. Deputies responded to the company after a 911 call late Monday morning. They learned while en route to the business that Oscar Danilo Peralta Rivera had fled the scene. The man who was stabbed was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Rivera’s vehicle was found abandoned on U.S. Highway 151 in Columbus. Officers used a K-9 and thermal drones to search for him without success Monday afternoon. Rivera and the victim knew each other through a woman. Investigators say it was a targeted attack. Rivera was taken into custody yesterday.  (Columbia County Sheriff’s photo).

DODGE COUNTY PRISON DEATH INVESTIGATIONS

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt will shed some light today on investigations into four deaths that occurred at Waupun Correctional Institution in Waupun. The deaths occurred last June, last October, and this past February. The press conference will be at the Sheriff’s Office in Juneau at 1 pm. It will also be streamed live on the Sheriff’s Facebook and YouTube pages.  In March Dodge County Medical Examiner PJ Schoebel concluded one of the inmates died of a drug overdose and another from a stroke. Thirty-year-old Tyshun Lemons was found dead at the prison on October 2nd. Twenty-four-year-old Cameron Williams was found dead on October 30th. Schoebel says Lemons overdosed on acetyl fentanyl, a potent opioid painkiller. He has ruled Lemon’s death accidental. Schoebel says a blood vessel burst in Williams’ brain resulting in a fatal stroke. Dean Hoffman killed himself in solitary confinement last June. Donald Maier was found dead at the prison on February 22nd. The Department of Corrections instituted lockdowns at Waupun as well as at prisons in Green Bay and Stanley last year due to a shortage of guards.

The changes take effect at the end of the month.

SECTION OF DODGE COUNTY HIGHWAY AY CLOSED

Dodge County Emergency Management is informing the public that County Highway AY east of Iron Ridge is closed for the next few days. Heavy rain has caused damage to the side of the roadway in the area. The water level has subsided and highway crews have quickly worked to stabilize the shoulder so that further damage won’t occur. Additional work needs to be done to make a permanent repair. Drivers are being asked to stay out of the area while the work is being completed. (Dodge County photo).

SEVERE STORM PROVIDED GOOD TEST FOR RIPON OUTDOOR SIRENS

Severe storms on Tuesday, May 21st provided a good test for Ripon’s four outdoor sirens. It was the first time during real storms the sirens were used since the one that was located on the top of City Hall was relocated to Oshkosh Street near Alliance Laundry Systems. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says that siren replaced an older one and as people downtown during Saturday afternoon siren tests can attest it can get pretty loud. That Tuesday night during the storms Tornado Warnings were issued for parts of Fond du Lac County three separate times resulting in the sirens being sounded all three times. Sonntag says the good news is they worked.  The city has now replaced three of its older sirens and the fourth remaining one will be replaced next year. (Ripon Police Department photo).

WISCONSIN HEAT AWARENESS DAY

Today is Heat Awareness Day in Wisconsin and Ready Wisconsin and the Department of Health Services has some recommendations for beating the heat and staying safe during heat waves. Remain inside air-conditioned buildings as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day. Call 2-1-1 to find an accessible cool place near you. If you don’t have air conditioning or a basement, take a cool shower, soak your feet in cold water, or place a cool, wet cloth on your forehead. Keep your windows covered. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol, caffeinated or high-sugar drinks. Never leave a child or pet unattended inside a parked car. Limit your pet’s time outdoors and make sure they have access to fresh drinking water. Seek medical attention right away if you develop heat stroke symptoms such as confusion, rapid breathing and heartbeat, body temperature above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, or nausea and vomiting. Check in with loved ones and neighbors during heat waves.  In 2023, 10 heat-related deaths occurred in Wisconsin and more than 750 residents visited emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses.

INSURANCE OFFICE ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIONS

Among the administrative actions taken by the state’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance last month was the denial of an application for an insurance license for a Fond du Lac woman. The Office says the action taken against Michelle Hamilton was based on allegations of a criminal conviction substantially related to insurance marketing. Overall the Office took administrative action against 31 individuals, and fined 4 companies.

DRIVER’S LICENSE EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION

The state’s Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles now offers an option for motorists and individuals to add one emergency contact to their driver license or ID record. Adding the information is voluntary and will not appear on the card. Governor Evers signed the “To Inform Families First” or “TIFF” law last year. It was put in place to provide law enforcement the ability to contact a family member or other loved one more quickly in the event of an emergency. Adding this information is not required. Only law enforcement, including police in other states can access the information. To add emergency contact information to a DMV record, visit the Wisconsin DMV website for the convenient online self-service application.
