The Bucks spend their 2nd round selection in the NBA Draft on G League Ignite forward Tyler Smith. The 6′9″ Smith is 19 years old and has a shooting stroke to pair with his size.

Smith averaged 13.4 points per game last season in the G League.

Milwaukee had spent its 1st round pick on A.J. Johnson out of the Australian NBL last night. Johnson, a Fresno, California, native, barely played last year in Australia, but has upside in the eye of Milwaukee GM Jon Horst.

The Bucks’ two selections are both viewed as players that offer more in terms of upside rather than immediate production.

It was the dream that LeBron James first floated a few years ago, the notion of playing in the NBA alongside one of his sons.

And it’s a step closer to reality now.

Bronny James – the oldest son of the NBA’s all-time scoring leader and four-time champion – was drafted Thursday by the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that his father has played for since 2018. Bronny James was taken with the No. 55 overall pick, deep in the second round and with only three picks remaining in this year’s draft.

Adding further intrigue to the move: LeBron James can become a free agent next week, which means he could choose to leave the Lakers and sign elsewhere.

The draft move doesn’t guarantee that father and son will actually play in a game together, nor does it even guarantee that Bronny James will be on the Lakers’ roster next season. But it certainly raises the possibility that it could happen in what would be an NBA first – a father-son on-court duo in the league simultaneously as players. There have been about 100 instances in NBA history of players joining the league after their fathers played, but those always came at least five years after the father’s career ended. Bronny James is a guard, one who was listed at 6-foot-4 on Southern California’s roster but measured at 6 feet, 1 1/2 inches at the draft combine. That would make him one of the shortest players in the NBA, but his athleticism and defensive ability helped give him this opportunity.

He played one year of college basketball at USC and averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season. He played in 25 games, missing the start of the season after needing a procedure last year to fix what was diagnosed as a congenital heart defect, which was found after he went into cardianc  arrest during a summer workout.

A panel of doctors cleared Bronny James for NBA play last month.

After a day off, the Brewers host the Cubs in a 3-game weekend series.  Milwaukee (48-33) will start RHP Colin Rea (6-2, 3.62 ERA) against Cubs right-hander Jameson Tallion, (4-3, 2.90 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 at American Family Field.

In the NL Central Thursday the Cubs won at San Francisco against the Giants 5-3, snapping a 4-game losing streak and the Reds bombed the Cardinals in St. Louis, 11-4. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 ½ games, the Pirates by 8 ½, the Reds by 10 and the Cubs by 10 ½ games.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the South Bend Cubs, 3-2, , halting South Bend’s 4-game winning streak. They play each other again tonight.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders picked up their fourth consecutive win on Thursday night at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids, defeating the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 6-0. This victory marked their first shutout win of the season, with the win the Dock Spiders record improved to 11-17.

The Dock Spiders return home on Friday for the first of two consecutive games at Herr-Baker Field against Wisconsin Rapids. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m, with post-game fireworks presented by Destination Lake Winnebago Region.

Cordell Tinch finished strong to advance to the finals in the 110 meter hurdles at the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials.

Running alongside defending world champion Grant Holloway, Tinch fell behind early and was running in fifth at one point in the race. The Bay Port grad was able to close the gap a bit in the final hurdles to finish second with a time of 13.19 and advance to the finals. Holloway won the race with a time of 12.96.

Tinch improved over his time from the first round, and was third overall between the two heats.

The finals in the 110 meter hurdles is set for Friday night at approximately 9:50 p.m. (CT).

Akshay Bhatia has the first-round lead after the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He shot an 8-under 64 and leads Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim by 1-shot. 6 players are 2 strokes off the pace, including Ricky Fowler.
