The Bucks picked guard AJ Johnson from the Australia NBL with their first pick of the 2024 NBA Draft.
Johnson, a native of Fresno, Calf., played for the Illawara Hawks in the Australian NBL last season.
According to ESPN’s prospect breakdown, Johnson is a talented guard who is looking to build off the experience he gained playing in the NBL. The 6′5″ guard has a skinny frame, and would fit in well with a team willing to give him the time to mature.
He played just eight minutes a game and averaged only two points per contest with Illawarra last season.
The 19-year old is the 13th youngest player in this year’s draft class and did not play much during his time in Australia.
Johnson originally committed to play college ball for Texas, but decmomitted to play professionally in Australia. At the time of that decision, he was projected to be a lottery pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The first pick Zaccharie RIsacher who was taken by the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta’s selection marked the second consecutive year a French player went at the top of the draft. Fellow Frenchman Alex Sarr was the second pick, going to the Washington Wizards and Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard went to the Houston Rockets at number 3.
The draft resumes at 6:00 CDT tonight with second and third round picks.
Andruw Monasterio hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning after entering as a replacement for injured Joey Ortiz, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-5 on Wednesday helped by Jake Bauers’ grand slam and Jackson Chourio’s inside-the-park homer.
Milwaukee recovered after wasting a 4-1 lead in Dallas Keuchel’s Brewers debut and the NL Central leader swept a three-game sweep from the World Series champion.
With Willy Adames on second base as the automatic runner, Bauers popped out on a bunt attempt off Jacob Latz (2-3), Rhys Hoskins was intentionally walked and Sal Frelick popped out. After a wild pitch, Monasterio lined a single to left-center.
Monasterio entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth after Ortiz ran into the tarp while chasing a popup in the top half.
Jared Koenig (7-1) pitched around an intentional walk in the 10th.
Christian Yelich had three singles and made his 200th stolen base.
Joel Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, was acquired from Seattle on Monday and allowed five runs, eight hits and a walk over four innings in his first big league appearance. The 36-year-old left-hander became Milwaukee’s big league-high 14th starting pitcher this season.
Nathaniel Lowe hit an RBI single in the first, and Lowe and Jonah Heim hit homers off him in the fourth.
Bauers homered in the third off Nathan Eovaldi for a 4-1 lead, a 444-foot drive for his seventh home run this season. Lowe hit a two-run homer in the fourth, Heim connected on the next pitch to tie the score and Robbie Grossman put Texas ahead 5-4 with an RBI single.
Chourio hit a 264-foot liner in the bottom half that landed in front of a diving center fielder Derek Hill and bounced to the wall near the 400-foot sign. Right fielder Adolis Garcia’s throw to Josh Smith was wide and Chourio beat the shortstop’s relay to the plate.
Chourio also made a diving catch in right field to rob Garcia of a hit in the seventh inning.
Eovaldi allowed five runs and a season-high nine hits in seven innings.
The Brewers are off today before hosting the Cubs for a 3-game series beginning Friday at American Family Field. 7:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central the Pirates over the Reds 6-1, the Giants edged the Cubs 4-3 and the Cardinals beat the Braves 4-1. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 games, the Pirates by 8 ½, the Reds by 10 ½ and the Cubs are 11 games out.
In the Midwest League Wednesday South Bend beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-4 at Fox Cities Stadium. They play again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:40.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders return to action tonight in Northwood’s League play at Wisconsin Rapids with the first pitch set for 6:35.
Brewers catcher Gary Sánchez went on the 10-day IL (left calf strain). C Eric Haase’s contract was selected from Triple-A Nashville and RHP Joel Kuhnel was designated for assignment and RHP Joe Ross was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Former Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb and his family are ‘lucky to be alive’ after their Tesla chargers started a fire at their home.
Aiyda Cobb recounted the incident on Wednesday with a post to her Instagram account, along with a picture of the damage.
“We are lucky to be alive. The Tesla charger caught on fire in the garage late last night and quickly spread. We got out of the house with nothing but the clothes on our back and no shoes on our feet. I’ll explain more later but posting this in case I miss any appts, calls, texts, meetings. Thank you GOD,” said Aiyda Cobb in her Instagram post.
Randall Cobb spent ten of his 13 year NFL career with the Packers and joined the New York Jets after friend and quarterback Aaron Rodgers was traded there last season.
