Joey Ortiz hit a tiebreaking homer in the fifth inning to put Milwaukee ahead for good and Bryse Wilson threw six shutout innings in the Brewers’ 3-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

Wilson (5-3) entered the game to start the third after Hoby Milner – normally a reliever – worked the first two innings. Milner became the 13th different pitcher to start a game for the Brewers this season, matching the Miami Marlins for the most of any team.

The six-inning stint matched Wilson’s longest of the season. He struck out four and allowed three hits and no walks.

Ortiz led off the fifth by sending a 2-2 pitch from Andrew Heaney over the left-field wall for the rookie’s seventh homer and a 2-1 lead.

Texas scored in the first inning against Milner, who was making his first career start. The left-hander allowed back-to-back hits against left-handed batters, as Corey Seager doubled and came home on Josh Smith’s single.

The Brewers tied the game in the third when Jackson Chourio’s two-out single brought home William Contreras, whose leadoff double went off the top of the center-field wall.

Ortiz then put Milwaukee ahead with his homer. Heaney (2-9) struck out four and allowed two runs, six hits and two walks in five innings.

The Brewers won despite leaving 10 men on base and that inability to produce with runners on kept the game close.

The Brewers got three walks against Brock Burke in the sixth, but Dane Dunning came out of the bullpen and caught a soft liner from Contreras to end the threat and keep the score at 2-1.

But the Brewers got an insurance run an inning later when Rhys Hoskins hit a slow roller to the left of second base that got past Seager and into shallow center for an RBI single. The two-out hit scored Christian Yelich from second after he had reached on a leadoff single.

Milwaukee’s Elvis Peguero worked the ninth for his second save in four opportunities. Peguero got the call in the ninth after usual closer Trevor Megill had pitched each of the last two days.

In other Brewers news C/DH Gary Sánchez was scratched from the starting lineup due to left calf tightness. … LHP Robert Gasser has undergone his Tommy John surgery. Brewers manager Pat Murphy estimated Gasser will have 12-14 months of recovery time.

RHP Nathan Eovaldi (4-3, 3.14 ERA) will start for the Rangers when this three-game series concludes Wednesday. The Brewers haven’t yet announced a starter. First pitch is at 1:10.

The Brewers added to their pitching depth by acquiring former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel (Kie-kel) from the Mariners for cash considerations.

Keuchel has pitched for five teams between 2022 and 2023, and has not posted a sub-five ERA in the last four seasons.

This year, he has been pitching with the Mariners Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, Wash. after signing a minor league deal with Seattle in the offseason.

The veteran left-hander has a 7-4 record with a 3.93 ERA over his 13 starts with Tacoma this season. That’s after posting a 1.61 ERA in his last five outings.

Keuchel has also been effective at generating outs over his career with a 57 percent ground ball rate. The southpaw once again has a groundball rate above 50 percent in the minors this year.

The major league average during Keuchel’s career is 43.75, according to Baseball Reference.

Milwaukee is in need of pitching help due to injuries to starters DL Hall, Wade Miley, Robert Gasser and Joe Ross (15-day injured list).

The Brewers have not officially announced an assignment for Keuchel but removed Collin Rea as the starter for Wednesday’s afternoon game against Texas. They currently have the starting pitcher for the series finale with the Rangers listed as TBA.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Pirates beat the Reds 9-5, the Giants downed the Cubs 5-1 and the Atlanta at St. Louis game was postponed. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 5 ½ games, the Pirates by 8 ½, the Reds by 9 ½ games and the Cubs are 10 games out.

The South Bend Cubs scored two runs in the first and four runs in the third on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. It was enough for them to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-4. Jonathan Long led South Bend with three hits, two walks, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field. Tate Kuehner (3-1, 3.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Erian Rodriguez (0-1, 5.40) is set to start for the Cubs. Game time is 12:10pm.

In the North Woods League the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders had an off-day Tuesday and will be off again today, before heading to Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. After their break, the Dock Spiders will play 27 games in 25 consecutive days leading up to the All-Star Break.

The NBA Draft starts tonight and for the first time will be held over two days instead of one. The Milwaukee Bucks will have the 23rd overall pick.

Congratulations to Wautoma Hornets Carson Armstrong and Trey Reilly for receiving D2 Honorable Mention All-State golf recognition.
