24 June 2024 Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Rookie Tobias Myers continued his terrific June by winning his fourth straight start and Blake Perkins highlighted a five-run second inning with a two-run single as the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep.

Myers (5-2) held the Padres to one run and five hits in five innings, with three strikeouts and no walks. He allowed one or no earned runs for the fourth time in his June starts — all Brewers wins — and won his fifth straight decision dating to May 21.

The Brewers gave him all the support he needed by scoring five runs on six hits off Michael King (5-5) in the second.

Besides Perkins’ two-run single, Brice Turang hit an RBI triple and Sal Frelick and Tyler Black had run-scoring singles.

The Padres had their four-game winning streak snapped. It had matched their season-best streak.

San Diego finally got to Myers in the fifth when Luis Arraez singled in Ha-Seong Kim, the third straight hit with two outs.

Arraez, the MLB hits leader with 104, had his big league-leading 32nd multi-hit game. He hasn’t gone more than four straight games without having a multi-hit game.

Brewers RHP Freddy Peralta (5-4, 4.06 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday night at home against Texas RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-3, 3.00).  First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Rays beat the Pirates 3-1, the Reds Sox over the Reds 7-4, the Mets downed the Cubs 5-2 and the Cardinals beat the Giant 5-3. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 5 games, the Pirates by 7 ½, the Cubs by 8 and the Reds by 8 1/2 games.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Fort Wayne to the Tin Caps, 6-5. There are no games today in the Midwest League.

On Star Wars Day at Herr-Baker Field, the Force was with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders as they tallied 16 hits, tying their season high, in a 13-5 victory over Lakeshore. With the win, the Dock Spiders improved their season record to 9-17.

The Dock Spiders head to Lakeshore for the first time this season on Monday, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

On the men’s PGA Tour Sunday, Scottie Scheffler won the Traveller’s Championship in a one-hole playoff with Tom Kim. Scheffler finished at 22-under-par, beating Tom Kim in a playoff after the two were tied following 72 holes.

It was Scheffler’s 6th win this year.

Scheffler rounded out a strong showing by carding a five-under-par 70 in the fourth round on Sunday. He had a pair of birdies on the sixth and seventh holes before notching three straight birdies on the back nine.

There was a disruption near the end of the day as protestors stormed the 18th hole. The protest happened as Scheffler, Kim and Akshay Bhatia were all on the green, and there was a pause in action as police cleared the protesters off of the playing area.

Scheffler and Kim played the playoff on the 18th hole, though the location of the hole was moved.

After Sunday’s win, Scheffler has now won the Travelers Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, the Masters Tournament, the RBC Heritage and the Memorial Tournament. He has also finished in the top 10 at five other events.

Amy Yang built a huge lead and survived a couple of late mistakes to win her long-awaited major title on Sunday, a 3-shot victory in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Yang closed with an even-par 72 to finish at 7-under 281. She was nearly flawless for the first 15 holes and reached 10 under for the tournament for a 7-shot lead before running into a little bit of trouble. But none of her pursuers was able to mount a significant charge.

At age 34, Yang is the oldest major winner on the LPGA Tour since Angela Stanford won the 2018 Evian Championship at age 40. Anna Nordqvist had recently turned 34 when she won the Women’s British Open in 2021.
