Jake Cronenworth’s ninth-inning blast Joel Payamps (1-2) sent the Padres to a series-opening 7-6 victory over the Brewers on Thursday night at Petco Park. It came after they had closed their previous homestand by winning consecutive games against Oakland with home runs from Kyle Higashioka and Jackson Merrill.

In the process, the Padres became the first team in baseball history to hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning in three consecutive home games, according to STATS. They became the first team since the 2019 Dodgers to hit walk-off home runs in any inning in three straight home games.

The Brewers had tied the game with two runs in the top of the 9th.

Fernando Tatis Jr., who went 4-for-5 with a monster 446-foot home run of his own, the longest by a Padre this season, according to Statcast.

Manny Machado’s home run opened the scoring for the Padres, who capitalized on a blunder from the Brewers defense. With one out in the first, Cronenworth hit what appeared to be a surefire double-play ball. But second baseman Brice Turang booted it and would settle for a mere forceout.

Machado and Merrill would follow with back-to-back home runs. First, Machado lofted a three-run blast to the opposite field, then Merrill added a solo shot, his sixth home run in the past eight games. The only center fielder with six home runs in an eight game span at a younger age than Merrill? Willie Mays in 1951. (Frank Robinson also accomplished the feat but played left field for two of those games.)

Willy Adames hit his 13th home run of the season, a 2-run blast in the 5th inning off Padres starting pitcher Adam Mazur and Bryce Turang went 3-for-5.

Milwaukee starter Bryce Wilson gave up 4 of his 5 runs in the 1st inning, while giving up 7 hits , striking out 5 and walking 2.

Jeremiah Estrada, now 3-1, notched the win, despite giving up the tying runs in the 9th.

The teams meet again tonight. Colin Rea (6-2, 3.29 ERA) will start for Milwaukee against San Diego’s Dylan Cease (6-8, 3.95 ERA). First pitch is as 8:40 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday, there was just one other game, as  the Cardinals nipped the Giants 6-5.  The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 ½ games, the Pirates by 7 ½, the Cubs by 8 and the Reds are 8 ½ games behind.

Milwaukee Brewers rookie left-hander Robert Gasser has decided to have Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him for approximately 12 months.

The 25-year-old’s decision came after he received multiple opinions on the best way to treat the left flexor strain that went him to the injured list on June 5.

Gasser is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts — all wins for the NL Central-leading Brewers — after missing the end of spring training with bone spurs in his throwing elbow. He last pitched on June 1 and reported some tightness and soreness the next day.

Gasser was drafted by the Padres in 2021 and was one of four players sent to Milwaukee for closer Josh Hader on Aug. 1, 2022.

The Green Bay Packers have claimed James Turner off waivers from the Detroit Lions, once again giving them a three-man kicking competition.

Turner kicked for Michigan’s national championship team last year after spending four seasons at Louisville. Green Bay added Turner on Thursday, one day after releasing former Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny.

The other two kickers on the Packers’ roster are incumbent Anders Carlson and former Minnesota Vikings Greg Joseph.

Turner went 18 of 21 on field-goal attempts and 65 of 66 on extra points for Michigan last year. He had gone 47 of 59 on field goals and 124 of 126 on extra points in his four seasons at Louisville.

The times of the Green Bay Packers’ public training camp practices have been announced.

The first open practice is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. July 22nd — the same date as the team’s annual shareholder meeting. All open practices will start at the same time.

There will be seven more open practices in July: on the 23rd and 24th, 26th-28th, 30th and 31st.

There will be an open practice on Aug. 1, two days before the annual Family Night practice at Lambeau Field. Open practices on Aug. 6-7 lead up to the first preseason game, on the road against the Cleveland Browns Aug. 10.

The next week features open practices Aug. 13 and 14 before a joint practice with the Denver Broncos in Denver Aug. 16 and a game Aug. 18.

The final two open practices are Aug. 20, and then Aug. 22 — a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens’ before the teams’ final exhibition game Aug. 24 at Lambeau Field.

All practices, except Family Night, are set for Ray Nitschke Field. In case of inclement weather, practices move indoors to the Don Hutson Center.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Fort Wayne 5-1. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05 CDT.

In the Northwood’s League Thursday the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders dropped a doubleheader to Battle Creek, 5-3 and 3-1.

It’s game 6 of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs tonight as the Florida Panthers (3-2) will try to wrap up the series at Edmonton against the Oilers. If necessary, a game-7 would be Sunday at Florida.

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a four-year contract with JJ Redick to make him the franchise’s next coach, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

Redick, an ESPN NBA analyst who played 15 years in the league, met with Lakers vice president and general manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss over the weekend, and conversations on the vacancy continued throughout the week, sources said.

Redick moved into the forefront of the search a week ago after the Lakers’ pursuit of Connecticut coach Dan Hurley was ultimately rebuffed.

The Lakers reportedly offered Hurley a six-year, $70 million contract that he turned down early last week.
