20 June 2024 Sports

It was a vintage outing for Freddy Peralta Wednesday night as the Brewers won 2-0 over the Angels at Angels Stadium.

Peralta breezed through six scoreless innings, scattering three singles and facing only one real jam in the sixth. Peralta stranded a pair of runners to end that threat, earning his first scoreless start in exactly two months.

Rhys Hoskins hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Christian Yelich’s 199th career stolen base led to an insurance run in the eighth. Brewers relievers Bryan Hudson (two scoreless innings) and Trevor Megill (15th save and second in as many nights) finished the victory for Peralta, who walked two batters and struck out eight while touching 97.7 mph.

It was a step in the right direction for Peralta, who was charged with nine earned runs on 14 hits in 8 2/3 innings over his previous two starts. On June 8, in Detroit, he lasted only 3 1/3 innings and pitched with diminished velocity as he searched for the strike zone. Six days later, against the Reds in Milwaukee, Peralta’s velocity was back up at over 98 mph, but he surrendered a career-high 10 hits and six earned runs.

Peralta’s most stressful test came in the sixth when Luis Rengifo reached on an infield hit despite a valiant effort from Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz. Rengifo advanced to second on a disputed balk and Peralta walked Kevin Pillar with two outs. However, Peralta had a path to escape when he wheeled around and had Rengifo picked off.

Unfortunately, his throw sailed into center field as both runners moved up a base.

He set his sights on retiring Angels designated hitter Logan O’Hoppe.

On Peralta’s 101st pitch, O’Hoppe grounded out.

Milwaukee continues its west coast road trip to San Diego where they play the Padres Thursday night in the first game of a 4-game series.  Bryse Wilson (4-3, 3.84 ERA) is the probable pitch for the Brewers against the Padres Adam Mazur (0-2, 7.82 ERA). First pitch is at 8:40 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Pirates shutout the Reds 1-0, the Cubs shaded the Giants 6-5 and the Marlins slipped past the Cardinals 4-3.  The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 7 ½ games, the Pirates by 8, the Cubs by 8 ½ and the Reds by 9 games.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Fort Wayne 8-3.  The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:05 CDT.

After a 1 hour and 42-minute rain delay to start the game, the Dock Spiders fell to the Green Bay Rockers, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Herr-Baker Field. The Dock Spiders moved to 7-15 on the year.

The Dock Spiders host the Battle Creek Battle Jacks in a doubleheader on Thursday, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 11:35 AM and game two at 6:35 PM. For game one, it’s Summer Fun Day at the Ballpark, so enjoy a summer afternoon with us! In game two, the first 500 fans will receive a snapback hat courtesy of Envision Greater Fond du Lac.

Former baseball great Willie Mays will be honored Thursday in a game at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama between the Giants and Cardinals. A capacity crowd around  8,300, will have the first-hand experience of enjoying a MLB game from inside the oldest professional ballpark, in the United States at 114 years old and the place where a 17-year-old Willie Mays began his Major League career.

Mays, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 93, played 13 games with the Black Barons in ’48, three years before he made his National League debut with the New York Giants.

The Show 24 will be added Rickwood Field to the game as part of its latest storyline celebrating the Negro Leagues and Black baseball. This storyline is centered around Mays, who roamed the Rickwood Field outfield with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1948.

Major League Baseball held a moment of silence before each game on Wednesday in honor of Mays.

The games observed the moment of silence before the first pitch. This followed similar gestures honoring Mays that occurred at some ballparks Tuesday night as news of his death spread around the baseball world.

The Green Bay Packers released Jack Podlesny on Wednesday, narrowing their kicking competition to two players a week after their minicamp.

Podlesny’s exit leaves incumbent Anders Carlson and former Minnesota Viking Greg Joseph as the only two kickers on Green Bay’s roster.

The Packers had signed Podlesny on Jan. 24, four days after Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of a 24-21 NFC divisional playoff loss at San Francisco. They signed Joseph two months later as they attempted to create more competition for Carlson, who struggled as a rookie last season.

Podlesny made 82.4% of his field-goal attempts during his college career at Georgia. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings in May 2023 but was released during training camp.

The Packers drafted Carlson out of Auburn in the sixth round last year to take over for Mason Crosby, the leading scorer in franchise history. Carlson went 27 of 33 on field-goal attempts — including 7 of 13 from at least 40 yards — and 34 of 39 on extra points during the regular season last season. He was 2 of 3 on field-goal attempts and 7 of 8 on extra points in two playoff games.

Joseph was 24 of 30 on field-goal attempts — also going 7 of 13 from at least 40 yards — and was 36 of 38 on extra points for the Vikings last season.

The Green Bay Packers Foundation announced this week it has awarded a total of $1.75 million in impact grants to ten nonprofit organizations serving Brown, Dane and Milwaukee counties.

A record total amount awarded at one time for the Impact Grant Program, which first began in 2013, the grants are aimed at directing significant funds toward organizations that serve their communities each day. The grants were celebrated at a luncheon Wednesday with representatives from each organization.

The grants of varying amounts were awarded to five organizations in Brown County, two in Dane County, two in Milwaukee County and one serving both Brown and Milwaukee counties. Some grants are matching grants, which require each recipient organization to raise the same amount to secure the donation.

“The Packers Foundation is pleased to award a record amount in impact grants to 10 organizations doing critically important work in their communities,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “From education, mentoring and community building programs to providing care and support for our most vulnerable neighbors, the grant recipients will create direct and lasting impacts throughout the state of Wisconsin.”

A proposal to implement the shot clock for high school basketball in 2026-27, with an option to utilize it in 2025-26 in non-conference by mutual agreement, was voted 6-4 down by the WIAA Board of Control on Wednesday.

If approved, it did not mean the shot clock would have been approved for play, however. The approval would have advanced the subject to a membership vote at the 2025 Annual Meeting. The likely length of the shot clock would be 35 seconds.

While Wisconsin once again has passed on implementing the shot clock, Illinois has voted to implement it for the 2026-27 season. Meanwhile, other Midwest states Minnesota and Iowa do have a shot clock, while Michigan, Indiana and Missouri do not have the shot clock.

Overall, 27 states have the shot clock.

The Green Bay Gamblers are introducing their new head coach.

The team promoted associate head coach Patrick McCadden, replacing Mike Leone, who left to become the new head coach of the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

McCadden, who played for the Gamblers in 2010 when they won the Clark Cup, has been with the Gamblers the past two seasons. Prior to that he was the associate head coach at Lawrence University from 2017-2022.

McCadden played at St. Norbert College for two seasons (2012-14) and was part of the 2014 national championship team. Before St. Norbert, he spent two years playing for Michigan Tech.
