Surging Brewers starter Tobias Myers took a shutout to the seventh inning and threw every pitch with a lead thanks to Christian Yelich, who hit his 200th career home run in the Brewers’ 6-3 win over the Angels on Tuesday at Angel Stadium — with a remarkable save from center fielder Sal Frelick as a punctuation mark..

Frelick’s leaping, game-ending catch robbed Taylor Ward of what would have been a tying, three-run home run and denied the Angels a wild comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning that began with the Brewers holding a 6-0 lead.

It’s been an eventful couple of weeks for Yelich, the 32-year-old former National League MVP, who capped the month of May by hitting his 300th double and has spent June chasing his 200th home run and 200th stolen base. He’d been sitting on 199 home runs since May 29 but ended that pursuit when he connected with a high fastball from Angels starter Griffin Canning in the first inning.

Now, just the stolen bases remain. Yelich needs two more for 200 in that category.

Yelich is the first visiting player to hit career home run No. 200 at Angel Stadium since Adrian Beltre in 2007 for the Mariners.

It provided a quick lead for Tobias Myers (4-3), who departed with a 6-0 lead after holding the Angels scoreless on four hits in 6 1/3 innings and has been the Brewers’ best starter this month. Over his three starts in June, Myers has gone 3-0 while limiting opponents to one run on eight hits in 20 1/3 innings. Tevor Megill picked up h is 14th save of the season.

Among the moments that followed Yelich’s first-inning home run was a Little League, three-run home run for rookie Jackson Chourio, who circled the bases on a two-RBI double and an error after his bouncer into the right field corner got past Angels outfielder Jo Adell.

When Frelick saved the victory with his catch, the celebration moved to the clubhouse, where Yelich was doused with beer. That’s a traditional celebration for milestones, especially for Major League firsts, but somehow, this was Yelich’s maiden beer shower.

Griffin Canning (2-8) took the loss. In 5 innings he gave  up 6 runs on 8 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2.

The team’s finish up their 3-game series tonight.   Freddy Peralta (4-4, 4.38 ERA) starts for Milwaukee against the Angels Tyler Anderson (6-6), 2:58 ERA.) First pitch is at 8:38 CDT.

In other games in the NL Central Tuesday, the Marlins nipped the Cardinals 9-8, the Reds slipped by the Pirates 2-1 and the Cubs over the Giants 5-2 The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 ½ games, the Reds and Pirates by 8 games and the Cubs by 8 ½.

Willie Mays, the greatest Giant of all and one of the greatest baseball players ever, died Tuesday at the age of 93.

The thoughts of many around baseball were on Mays this week, with Thursday’s MLB at Rickwood Field game in Birmingham, Ala., between the Giants and Cardinals set to be a celebration of Mays’ career — which began with the Birmingham Black Barons — and of the Negro Leagues in general.

“All of Major League Baseball is in mourning today as we are gathered at the very ballpark where a career and a legacy like no other began,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

“Willie Mays took his all-around brilliance from the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League to the historic Giants franchise. From coast to coast in New York and San Francisco, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as the game grew and truly earned its place as our National Pastime.”

Mays ranks sixth all time with 660 home runs and won 12 Gold Glove Awards for his defense in center field.  Mays became the first player to exceed 300 homers and 300 stolen bases in 1969, reflecting his ideal blend of power and speed.

As prodigious a hitter as Mays was — he surpassed 50 home runs 10 years apart, in 1955 and 1965, hit four home runs in a game at Milwaukee on April 30, 1961, and batted .301 lifetime — his signature moment might have been the over-the-shoulder catch he made in the 1954 World Series opener at New York’s Polo Grounds, robbing Cleveland’s Vic Wertz of a potential game-winning hit.

Mays was the first player to hit 20 or more home runs for 17 consecutive seasons (1954-70).  He holds or shares All-Star records for appearances (24), at-bats (75), runs (20), hits (23), triples (three), extra-base hits (eight) and total bases (40).

Mays was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979

In the Midwest League Tuesday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Fort Wayne over the Tin Caps 4-1 to improve to 41-23 on the season.  The Tin Caps fell to 27-37.  They play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05 CDT.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders secured a thrilling 9-8 walk-off victory over the Green Bay Rockers in the third annual I-41 showdown at Neuroscience Group Field on Tuesday night. With this win, the Dock Spiders improved their season record to 7-14 and maintained a perfect 3-0 record in the I-41 series since 2022.

The Dock Spiders return to Herr-Baker Field on Wednesday to face the Green Bay Rockers again, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. On Wednesday night, the Dock Spiders will honor area police officers, firefighters, and first responders with a $1 ticket offer. Plus, fan-favorite characters will make a special appearance.

Connor McDavid has dragged the Florida Panthers back to Alberta.

The Edmonton Oilers star continued one of the most dominant playoff performances in NHL history with two goals and two assists in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday night, cutting the Panthers’ series lead to 3-2 and forcing a Game 6 on Friday at Rogers Place.

McDavid now has 42 points in 23 playoff games, putting him five points away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s 1985 NHL record of 47 points in 18 games for points in a single postseason.

The Oilers have scored 80 goals as a team in the playoffs. McDavid is in position to become the second player in NHL history to have a point on over 50% of his team’s goals, after Gretzky in 1988.

The date is set for the state of Wisconsin’s premier men’s college basketball rivalry.

Wisconsin and Marquette are scheduled to face off at Fiserv Forum Dec. 7. Tipoff time will be announced later. The Badgers have won three consecutive games in the annual matchup with the Golden Eagles. Wisconsin won 75-64 last December.

Wisconsin has a 71-59 all-time lead in the series, which began in 1917. In Milwaukee, Marquette leads the series 41-30.
