6/19/24 Ammonia Leak at Milk Specialties in FDL

19 June 2024 News

The Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Department received a call about a possible Ammonia leak at Milk Specialties at 325 Tompkins Street just before 5 pm Tuesday afternoon.  Their Hazmat team responded and met with facility staff who confirmed the leak inside the plant involving the Ammonia refrigeration system. Air monitoring equipment found low readings of Ammonia outside, but not extending beyond the property. Higher readings were found in a compressor room. A shelter in place order was issued for residents living near the plant while the gas was vented from the building. Fire and Rescue and Police went to door to door to advise residents to stay indoors. At 10:40 pm members of the Kuhlman refrigeration company confirmed the leak was shut down. The shelter in place order was lifted at 10:45 pm. Crews remained on the scene until 1:35 this morning ventilating the remaining structure before turning the building back over to company officials. One worker was transported to St. Agnes Hospital for evaluation. No responders were injured. Milk Specialties Global is a whey and milk protein producer.
