The Brewers opened up their West Coast road trip by losing Monday night to the Angels, 5-3.

MLB Pipeline’s No. 6 Brewers prospect, 22-year-old Carlos Rodriguez, surrendered too much two-out damage and didn’t make it through five innings for the second time in as many Major League starts. The defense didn’t help him, including one misplay in the right-field corner that wasn’t ruled an error, and another play at first base on a cover play at rst base. Rodriquez lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving all 5 runs, 4 earned, on 5 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He also gave up a home run and drops to 0-2.

The Brewers did get home runs from two California natives who grew up within a half-hour’s drive from Angel Stadium — a two-run shot from Huntington Beach’s Jake Bauers in the second inning and a solo homer from Corona’s Brice Turang in the fifth. But Turang’s homer came moments after Blake Perkins was picked off first base on a deft move by Angels spot starter Zach Plesac — the nephew of all-time Brewers saves leader Dan Plesac. Other than the homers, it was another night on which Milwaukee’s offense was missing the clutch hit.

The most maddening example of that came in the seventh, when the Brewers put runners at second and third with nobody out against Plesac’s replacement, Luis García. But Gary Sánchez, Perkins and Turang all struck out to end the threat.

Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy faith in Rodriguez, though it is unclear whether the right-hander’s next start will be with the Brewers or back at Triple-A Nashville, since veteran righty Jakob Junis is due back from shoulder and head injuries later this week. In his first two MLB starts, Rodriguez has surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits in 8 1/3 innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Bauers’ home run spotted Rodriguez a 2-0 lead, but it slipped away amid a three-run Angels rally in the third that included a Luis Guillorme RBI triple — which initially was ruled a double and an error charged to right fielder Sal Frelick as the baseball rattled around the right-field corner — and an error charged to Bauers on a soft bouncer up the first-base line.

Angels’ starter Zack Plesac (1-0) got the win. He went 6 innings, giving up 3 runs, all earned, on 6 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 3. He also surrendered 2 homers.

The teams meet again tonight. RHP Tobias Meyers (3-2, 3.76 ERA) will start for Milwaukee against another right-hander, Griffin Canning (2-7, 4.76 ERA). First pitch is at 8:30 CDT. Former Brewer great Ryan Braun was at the game with his family and was in the TV broadcast booth for an inning with two of his young children. He’ll visit Milwaukee next month to become the 23rd member of the American Family Field Walk of Dream., which is the franchise’s highest honor shy of number retirement. A ceremony is set for Sunday, July 28.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday, the Giants edged the Cubs 7-6,the Cardinals nipped the Marlins 7-6 and the Pirates over the Reds 4-1. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 5 ½ games, the Pirates by 7, the Reds by 8 and the Cubs are 8 ½ games off the pace.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are back in action tonight are at Fort Wayne tonight against the Tin Caps,  with the first pitch at 6:05 CDT.

Behind 31 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists from Jayson Tatum and 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists from Finals MVP Jalen Brown, , the Boston Celtics blew out the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 to win the 2024 NBA Finals, winning a record-setting 18th NBA title on the 16th anniversary of the day they won their 17th championship in this same building.

In doing so, the Celtics passed their forever rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, for the most titles in NBA history.

Boston, after playing its worst game of the season Friday night in its first chance to close this series out, responded with a wire-to-wire victory Monday. Big performances from Tatum and Brown allowed Boston to put the game away early — much like it did in 2008, when the Celtics routed the Lakers in Game 6 at TD Garden to win what had been their most recent championship.

The Celtics built a 21-point lead at halftime, with a last second shot by Peyton Pritchard, s half-court heave of the series emphatically sending them into the break with a comfortable cushion — and sending the sellout crowd at TD Garden into a frenzy.

Brown earned his MVP award behind series averages of 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5 assists, while also consistently guarding Mavericks superstar Luke Doncic, who finished with 28 points.

In the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, it’s game 5 tonight at Edmonton. The Florida Panthers lead the series 3-1 over the Oilers and can wrap up the championship.

Outfielder Christian Yelich was in second place among NL outfielders with 821,037 votes, trailing only Jurickson Profar of the San Diego Padres (900,541 votes). Other leading outfielders were Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres (798,609 votes), Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers (761,934 votes), Nick Castellanos of the Phillies (439,764 votes) and Johan Rojas of the Phillies (363,047 votes)

With 244,957 votes, third baseman Joey Ortiz was in third place at his position, behind the Phillies’ Alec Bohm (1,012,174 votes) and the Padres’ Manny Machado (267,063 votes).

The top two players at each infield position, catcher and DH, plus the top six outfielders, advance to the finals at the end of the first phase of voting. The phase ends at 11 a.m. CT June 27. The top vote-getter at each position will then earn a starting spot in the all-star game.

Another update is set for next Monday.

For the first time in three decades, the Green Bay Packers have a new equipment manager.

Team officials announced Monday that Chris Kuehn has been hired as the Packers’ equipment manager. Kuehn is taking over for Gordon “Red” Batty, who announced earlier this year he’s retiring from the position he held for the last 30 years.

Kuehn started working for the Packers in 2010 as an equipment locker room assistant. He was then promoted in 2020 to equipment assistant.

Kuehn also previously worked as an assistant equipment manager for the Salt Lake City Stallions of the Alliance of American Football and XFL’s Houston Roughnecks.
