Willy Adames hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Blake Perkins threw out a runner at the plate to end the game and preserve the Milwaukee Brewers’ 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Cincinnati’s Stuart Fairchild was trying to score from second on Santiago Espinal’s bloop hit to center field.

“Off the bat, it was kind of tough,” Perkins said. “I was trying to decide whether or not I was going to go for the catch, like a dive, or play it on a hop. It fell a little bit quicker than I had anticipated, and I knew I just needed to try to get it and get it out as quick as possible. And I was able to do that, so it was pretty cool.”

Catcher William Contreras remained down for several seconds after applying the tag.

The Brewers won two of three from Cincinnati this weekend and have taken each of the last eight series with the Reds. The Brewers lead the NL Central by 6 ½ games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cincinnati wasted a thrilling performance from Elly De La Cruz, who homered, tripled and scored three runs. One of those runs came when he raced all the way home from second on Colin Rea’s errant pickoff attempt in the third inning.

De La Cruz tripled and scored in the first inning and hit a leadoff homer off Jared Koenig in the eighth. Spencer Steer also homered for the Reds.

The Reds took a 3-0 lead in the first four innings. They still led 3-1 before Adames’ homer.

After Contreras singled and Christian Yelich walked to start the sixth, the Reds removed starter Frankie Montas and brought Lucas Sims (1-3) in from the bullpen. Adames sent Sims’ first pitch over the center-field wall, a 421-foot shot that gave the Brewers their first lead of the day.

The Brewers extended their lead to 5-3 in the seventh as Yelich’s two-out bunt single to the right side scored Brice Turang from third.

De La Cruz made it a one-run game again in the eighth. The Reds put runners on the corners later in the eighth, but Perkins made a diving catch of a Jonathan India liner to end the threat.

Cincinnati put the tying run in scoring position again with one out in the ninth when Fairchild hit a grounder to Adames, whose wild throw to first enabled the batter to reach second.

Trevor Megill retired TJ Friedl on a pop fly to Adames and intentionally walked De La Cruz before facing Espinal. Perkins caught the ball on one hop and fired a throw to the plate that didn’t make a single bounce before reaching Contreras at the plate.

Rea (6-2) allowed three runs – two earned – along with four hits and one walk in six innings.

Megill recorded his 13th save in 14 opportunities.

The Brewers travel to the west coast to open a series with the Angels Monday. Carlos Rodriquez (0-1, 4.91 ERA) is slated to start for Milwaukee against fellow right-hander Jose Soriano (4-5, 3.48 ERA). First pitch is at 8:38 CDT.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Cardinals edged the Cubs 2-1 and the Pirates over the Rockies 8-2. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 6 ½ games, the Reds and Pirates by 8 games and the Cubs by 8 ½.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at West Michigan Whitecaps 8-5. The T-Rats improve to 40-23 while the Whitecaps drop to 31-32. There are no games scheduled in the league today.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders fell to the Madison Mallards on Sunday afternoon at Herr Baker Field, with a final score of 16-4. The loss drops the Dock Spiders’ record to 6-14 for the season.

The Dock Spiders have a day off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday night in Appleton against the Green Bay Rockers in the I-41 Showdown presented by Holiday Automotive. The Dock Spiders will host the Green Bay Rockers in the third annual I-41 Showdown at Neuroscience Group Field, home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Notably, the 2022 rivalry game marked the first Northwoods League game played in a current minor league stadium. Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium was recently named the 2023 Ballpark of the Year by Ballpark Digest.

Brysn DeChambeau won his second U.S. Open title on Sunday by getting up-and-down from 55 yards in a bunker — one of the toughest shots in golf — to deliver another unforgettable finish at Pinehurst and a celebration just as raucous as when his hero, Payne Stewart, won with a big par putt in 1999.

This was nothing like DeChambeau winning at Winged Foot in 2020, when there were no fans and no drama. This was high suspense that ultimately came down to a trio of short putts.

McIlroy, who for so much of the final round looked certain to end 10 years without a major, had a one-shot lead until missing a 30-inch par putt on the 16th hole. Tied for the lead on the 18th, with DeChambeau behind him in the final group, McIlroy missed a par attempt from just inside 4 feet. He finished at 6-under 274.

Patrick Cantlay lingered around this duel all afternoon, unable to get the putts to fall at the right time until he missed a 7-foot par putt on the 16th hole that ended his chances. He closed with a 70 and tied for third with Tony Finau, who matched a Sunday best with 67 without ever having a serious chance of winning.

The Celtics can wrap up another NBA title tonight as they host the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs stayed alive Friday night with a 122-84 win at home to send the series back to Boston for game-five. Luka Doncic led Dallas with 29 points and Kyrie Irving chipped in with 21.

This time, there was no unpleasant surprise waiting for Ryan Blaney near the finish line of a NASCAR Cup Series race.

Grabbing the lead on crew chief Jonathan Hassler’s two-tire call under the final caution of Sunday night’s Iowa Corn 350, Blaney led the final 88 laps of the inaugural Cup race at 0.875-mile Iowa Speedway.

In front of a large contingent of family and friends, the reigning series champion crossed the finish line 0.716 seconds ahead of runner-up William Byron, who was racing on four new tires after a pit stop under caution for Chris Buescher’s accident on Lap 260.

The victory was Blaney’s first of the season and the 11th of his career. Blaney now has won at Iowa Speedway in all three NASCAR national series, having triumphed in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2012 and the Xfinity Series in 2015.

For the second straight year, the Plymouth Panthers are state champions on the pitch after defeating Catholic Memorial, 2-1, in this year’s championship game.

Hailey Batzner got the scoring started in the 11th minute, giving Plymouth an early 1-0 lead. Catholic Memorial needed just four minutes to respond, with Lucia Brown cashing in off of a corner kick to even the score.

The Panthers took the lead for good in the 69th minute on a deep goal from Melinda Knowles, which ricocheted off the crossbar and in. Paige Kurtz made six saves for Plymouth.

The Panthers repeat as state champions for the first time in program history, and they are the first to go back-to-back in Division 3 since Catholic Memorial pulled it off in 2016 and 2017. Plymouth finishes the season with a record of 20-1-2.

Meanwhile, Kimberly appeared in a state championship game for the first time since 2011, falling to Muskego, 2-1, in the Division 1 title game. Muskego wins their third consecutive state championship.

Emily McCarthy scored in the final minute of the first half to give the Papermakers the lead, but Muskego responded with 2 goals in the second half to come away victorious.

After Emily McCarthy scored a miracle goal late in the first half to give Kimberly a 1-0 lead it appeared the Papermakers just might be on their way to their first state championship.

However, McCarthy was injured in the second half with the score tied 1-1 and she missed about the last 30 minutes. Muskego benefited from not having to deal with the Papermakers’ star and broke a 1-1 tie in the 72nd minute and beat Kimberly 2-1 to win its third straight Division 1 girls soccer state title at Uihlein Soccer Park.
