Rookie Tobias Myers won back-to-back starts for the first time, allowing one run and three hits over six innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on Wednesday for their sixth straight home series win.
Myers (3-2) struck out four and walked one, leaving with a 5-1 lead. The 25-year-old right-hander improved to 3-0 in his last five starts.
Milwaukee stranded the potential tying run at third base in a three-run ninth when pinch-hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. flied out to the center-field warning track.
The Brewers took two of three from the Blue Jays, who announced they had traded infielder-outfielder Cavan Biggio to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league pitcher Braydon Fisher. The NL Central-leading Brewers are 20-11 at home and 20-17 on the road.
Toronto, which had won five of seven, dropped to 33-35 and has not been at .500 since April.
Davis Schneider hit his eighth home run of the season in the first inning, and Myers faced one batter over the minimum over the rest of his outing.
Toronto starter Chris Bassitt allowed five hits in five scoreless innings. The Brewers loaded the bases in the first and third innings, extending a streak to 0 for 24 with runners in scoring position.
Zach Pop (0-1) walked Blake Perkins with two outs in the sixth along allowed a single to Brice Turang that put runners on the corners. Turang stole second as catcher Alejandro Kirk’s throw bounced away from second baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Perkins came across on what was credited as a steal of home and Turang went to third on Kirk’s error.
William Contreras’ single put Milwaukee ahead 2-1, Christian Yelich hit an RBI single off Tim Mayza and Willy Adames hit a two-run homer.
Spencer Horwitz had an RBI single in the ninth off Hoby Milner before Trevor Megill relieved. Bo Bichette’s RBI single and Kirk’s sacrifice fly pulled the Blue Jays within a run before Megill retired Guerrero for his 11th save in 12 chances.
Brewer 3B Joey Ortiz was scheduled for imaging on his left hamstring, which caused him to be scratched Tuesday. Neither Ortiz nor manager Pat Murphy expected the injury to be serious.
The Brewers are off today. Brewers: RHP Freddy Peralta (4-3, 3.95) will be on the mound Friday for a series opener against visiting Cincinnati, which starts RHP Hunter Greene (4-2, 3.61).
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday, the Cubs edged the Rays 4-3, the Reds over the Indians 4-2 and the Cardinals beat the Pirates 4-2. The Brewers led the Cubs, Reds and Cardinals by 7 game and the Pirates by 7 ½..
In the Midwest League Wednesday the West Michigan Whitecaps won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 4-1. The teams play again today with the first pitch at 5:35 CDT.
A six-run first inning set the tone as the Dock Spiders were shut out for the first time all season, falling to the Mallards 9-0. With the loss, the Dock Spiders moved to 5-11 on the season.
The Dock Spiders will travel to Green Bay on Thursday for their first matchup of the season against the Rockers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
In the NBA Finals Wednesday night, the visiting Boston Celtics took a 3-gmaes to nothing lead over the Dallas Mavericks with a106-99 win. Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brown combined for 61 points as Boston won without the services of Kristaps Porzingis.
Kyrie Irving shook off duds in Games 1 and 2 with a game-high 35 points, only to watch that effort crumble to rubble once Luka Doncic fouled out with 4:12 remaining.
Game 4 is Friday night at Dallas.
The Packers wrapped up their minicamp Wednesday and now have five and a half weeks off before the start of training camp.
Coach Matt LaFleur had one message for his team.
“Over the course of these next 5 weeks the challenge to these guys is that you cannot come back the same player,” LaFleur said. “You’ve got to come back better. You’ve got to come back in better shape and come back better mentally.”
“We have laid a good foundation,” LaFleur said. “I think it’s a good start. But it doesn’t matter when we come back to training camp. It’s about what we do moving forward. It’s just the foundation.”
The Packers start training camp a little earlier than normal. It will kick off on Monday, July 22, as they prepare for that early season opener the Friday of Week 1 in Brazil against the Eagles.
The first round of the 2024 U.S. Open will take place on Thursday at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
Scottie Scheffler enters as the favorite after an eventful PGA Championship. He is the undisputed best player in the world right now but was knocked off his throne for only a moment by Xander Schauffele, who took home the trophy at the OGA Championship. It was Schauffele’s first Major title.
Jerry West, who was selected to the Basketball Hall of Fame three times in a storied career as a player and executive and whose silhouette is considered to be the basis of the NBA logo, died Wednesday morning at the age of 86, the LA Clippers announced.
West was the third player in NBA history to reach 25,000 points, was an All-Star every year of his career and led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Finals nine times, winning one title, in 1971-72. He also was a 12-time All-NBA selection, an NBA Finals MVP as part of a losing team in 1969 — the first year that award was given out and still the only time it went to a player on the losing squad — and part of the NBA’s 75th anniversary team.
