FDL ATTEMPTED MURDER SUSPECT TURNS HERSELF IN
Fond du Lac Police say a 32-year-old woman wanted in connection with a shooting last Saturday has turned herself in. Ansheretta West turned herself in to Fond du Lac Police Officers about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. She is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on an attempted first-degree intentional homicide charge. Police responded to the area of 175 Hamilton Place just before 4:30 last Saturday afternoon for a 20-year-old Fond du Lac man who had been shot in the leg. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injury. Police are still investigating the incident. NEW YORK MAN SENTENCED FOR DEFRAUDING PACKER BUCKS AND OTHER FANS
A 28-year-old man from New York, New York has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for defrauding Wisconsin residents and others for tickets and luxury box suites to NFL and NBA games. Nikhil Mahtani was sentenced yesterday for wire fraud. According to federal court documents between January 4th 2019, and December 11th 2022 he placed over a thousand ads on Craigslist offering high end tickets and luxury box suites to NFL and NBA games and other professional sporting events around the country. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Mahtani accepted thousands of dollars in payments knowing what he offered wasn’t legitimate. In one instance, a large group of friends and family members showed up at Fiserv Forum the night the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Championship in 2021, only to be turned away. It is estimated he received $120,000 from over 100 victims in Wisconsin and across the U.S. Federal Judge William Griesbach rejected Mahtani’s request for probation noting he victimized sports fans who had their hearts set on attending a variety of professional sporting events including Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks games. In addition to the prison sentence Mahtani was ordered to pay $88,000 in restitution to his victims.
WINNECONNE FLEEING SUSPECT SOUGHT
Winneconne Police are asking for help identifying a motorcyclist who fled from an attempted traffic stop at 8:30 Tuesday night. An officer attempted to pull over the driver who instead fled through the Village and into the Town of Winneconne. The motorcyclist was going well over the posted speed limits. The officer terminated the pursuit. Winneconne Police posted a photo of the suspect and video on their Facebook page. Anyone with information can contact Winneconne Police at 920-582-9944. WASHINGTON COUNTY FIGHTING PROPOSED PLACEMENT OF SEXUALLY VIOLENT OFFENDER
Washington County authorities are fighting the potential placement of a sexually violent offender from Outagamie County in a community based residential facility in the Town of Trenton. Sixty-two-year-old Paul Schabow was committed as a sexually violent person on July 18th, 1997. A canvass by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office found a couple of valid reasons for the court to reconsider placement. For one thing there is a town park within the distance restricted by state statute for sex offenders. Second there is a current in-home daycare facility that is seeking state licensing to increase the number of children under its care within a prohibited radius. The Sheriff’s office made door-to-door contact with 122 homes within a1500 foot radius of the proposed placement. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is working with the county attorney, the county executive’s office, and the Town of Trenton on the challenge. A motion to intervene in the placement was filed in Outagamie County Court.
SUN PRARIE MAN TRIES TO AVOID TOW
A 25-year-old Sun Prairie man is facing charges for failing to stop when a Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy tried to pull him over Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 151 in the Town of Columbus. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle for several equipment violations but the driver, Aron Gonzalez continued into the City of Columbus stopping about a minute later. He explained to the deputy he didn’t want his vehicle to get towed, so he drove into a parking lot. Gonzalez was arrested for his 5th OWI offense, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer, operating while revoked, and a probation violation. BEAR SIGHTINGS IN MARKESAN
Markesan Police say they’ve received a couple reports of black bear sightings recently. Black bears are transient and their movement increases in June as breeding season begins and young bears disperse to find their own space. They are usually not dangerous to humans unless they feel threatened. If you see a bear, do not approach it. If it presents an immediate danger, call 911. Some ways to make your property less attractive to bears include removing bird feeders, keep garbage in sealed cans inside a sturdy shed or garage, and take your trash out just before scheduled pickup. Other tips include removing grease cans from grills and turn the grill on high for several minutes after cooking to burn off residual odors. It is also recommended to avoid placing food, including pet food, outside to attract wildlife. Any food items used to attract or feed birds, squirrels, or other wildlife will also attract bears. MATTHEW SPENCE APPOINTED SHEBOYGAN COUNTY SHERIFF
Governor Tony Evers this week appointed Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Sheriff Cory Roeseler’s retirement on June 3rd. Spence will complete the remainer of the unexpired term that ends in January 2027. Governor Evers says, “With more than two decades of service in the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer who is committed to his community.” Spence has spent his entire law enforcement career with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. HEARING TODAY ON RIPON WATER RATE INCREASE REQUEST
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin will hold a public hearing on Zoom today to consider Ripon’s application to increase water rates. The increase is necessary due to a 43 percent increase in gross plant investment and a 43 percent increase in operating expenses since the city’s last water rate case was completed in 2011. The total increase in water revenues requested is $626,436 which will result in an estimated overall increase of 49 percent. It will be implemented in two steps. The first increase would be implemented after the PSC makes a decision about the case. If the request is granted the water bill for an average residential customer will increase from $74.04 to $109.62 per quarter, a 48 percent increase. The public hearing is at 3 pm. RIPON COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES ENGINEERING CONTRACT FOR SCADA IMPROVEMENTS
The Ripon Common Council Tuesday night approved a $98,000 contract with MSA for engineering services for its SCADA system improvement project. SCADA is a computer data and software program that monitors the city’s water and wastewater systems and infrastructure. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the Council the current system uses a Windows 7 program and has long been outdated. He says they currently have to monitor the water and wastewater systems separately and it costs thousands of dollars a year to keep the current SCADA system working. He estimates improving the SCADA system will cost from $500,000 to $700,000 but an upgrade will allow them to avoid things like a boil water order or potential sewer backups. It may also help in monitoring phosphorous in wastewater which over the past few years has become more a of focus for the state and federal governments.
ADDITIONAL SHERIFFS’ DEPUTIES
Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says more Sheriff’s deputies will be hired over the next several years to better protect the public. He says in talking with Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt he learned the county is actually down 19 deputies from what it really needs. Kaufman says it is a big county and when you have one officer covering a large area it increases the response time for getting to a scene. Kaufman says the goal is to hire 12 additional deputies over the next three years. The County Board has already approved the hiring of three additional deputies and two more will be hired later this year. He notes going to 12 hours shifts with more days off in between work rotations will be more appealing to their deputies but will also reduce the number of deputies needed by 3.6 positions.
RIPONFEST CAR SHOW COMING UP
Riponfest and an annual car show that is now part of it is coming up in about two weeks. Car show organizer Howard Stibb says they had 194 cars last year and this year will be the third year for the show at Barlow Park. They are looking for entries which can register the day of at the park. Stibb says car owners seem to enjoy having it at the park rather than downtown when the car show was part of Septemberfest. Cars can be entered for $10. They will be giving away 91 plaques to some of the best vehicles at the show and each includes a photo of the car. The Best in Show will receive a trophy. Last year’s Best in Show was from Beaver Dam and was a 1973 Dodge Dart. Registration will begin at 8 am the day of the show, Sunday, June 30th. ROSENDALE BRANDON FFA GOES ABROAD
The Wisconsin FFA Annual Convention wraps up in Madison today at the Alliant Energy Center, but it wasn’t too long ago that eight members of the Laconia High School FFA got another experience of a lifetime. Shortly before classes wrapped those members took a trip to Ireland. Photos of their trip were posted on the Rosendale-Brandon School District website. District Superintendent Wayne Weber says it takes a lot of courage to travel abroad with people you aren’t really familiar with especially at such a young age. Some of the highlights of the Ireland trip included visiting an oyster farm, Abbey, mine, a sheepdog demonstration and more. A few of those same FFA members attended the state convention this week.
